MISS ELENA GERHARDT who contributes the first of a series of exquisite records to this month's bulletin ELENA GERHARDT (Soprano)

Der Nussbaum. Schumann. Piano (Red Label) acc. Ivor Newton C-01092 12" 7j6

Standchen (Serenade) Op. 17, No. 2. (Red Label) Strauss. Piano Ivor Newton C-01093 12" 7'6 acc. .

SINCE her debut in this country, at a concert given by Elman at the Queen's Hall in 1906, Elena Gerhardt has gained a magnificent reputation as one of the greatest exponents of " lieder " singing ever before the public. Whilst still a student at the Conservatoire, she was heard by that world-famous conductor, , who was so impressed with her singing that he acted as accompanist at her first recital, and they afterwards toured and then Europe together.

The announcement we are able to make that this great artiste has entered into an exclusive engagement to record for the Aeolian Company those beautiful songs by her inter- pretations of which she has become world-famous, will undoubtedly be greeted with enthusiasm, and we recommend all music lovers to take immediate advantage of these first recordings containing as they do, two perfect specimens of her art, further enhanced by Mr. Ivor Newton's beautiful accompaniments. OPERATIC EVELYN SCOTNEY (Soprano)

Caro Nome (Dearest Nanie). Verdi. In Italian. "Rigoletto." With Orchestral Acc. (Pink Label) A-0191 12" 81-

VELYN SCOTNEY, the famous Australian soprano E has had and still enjoys a magnificent operatic career i;_ the , having sung with the Boston Opera Company and also at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, in most of the leading soprano roles. Her brilliant coloratura voice is in every way adapted to interpreting the famous air from " Rigoletto," and there is a natural beauty in the flexibility and purity of her voice, seldom to be found upon records. CELYS BERALTA (Soprano) Polonaise (I am Titania). Thomas. " Mignon." In Italian. With The (Red Label) Aeolian Orchestra C-01090 12" 7; 6 IT goes without saying that this famous coloratura aria is just the very thing for Senorita Beralta's marvellously flexible voice ; in it she challenges comparison with the many stars " of the operatic firmament who have sung this intricate and fascinating number. G. LENGHI-CELLINI (Tenor) Ah ! non credea (Could I believe). Thomas. " Mignon." In Italian. (Red Label) With the Aeolian Orchestra C-01091 12" 7 6 . ONCE again Cellini charms us with that wonderful sense of pathos and sentiment which is peculiarly his. In the delightful air from the final act of " Mignon," the great Italian tenor excels himself. OPERATIC AND BALLAD

KATHLEEN DESTOURNEL FRANK TITTERTON

KATHLEEN DESTOURNEL (Soprano)and FRANK TITTERTON (Tenor) Two favorite `Vocalion' vocalists collaborate in two charming duets Miserere. " 11 Trovatore." Verdi. .) (Blue Labe]) A Night in Venice. Lucontoni. . With The Aeolian Orchestra j D-02096 12" 7; 6 . C OLLABORATION between two very popular ' Vocalion' artists has resulted in this splendid record, which will undoubtedly lead to many demands for further examples of their art as duettists. Destournel's sweet soprano is never overbalanced by the mellow tones of Frank Titterton's attractive voice, and both duets are further enhanced by excellent orchestral accompaniments. The latter point is one of the special features of ' Vocalion ' recording which we know is always greatly appreciated by our patrons, and the present examples bear further improvements in this direction. MALCOLM McEACHERN (,93ass) The Mariner in his Barque (Hear me,l gentle Wallace I (Blue Label) The Desert_llaritana). Louis Emmanuel . . D-02095 12" 7, ,6 With The Aeolian Orchestra . A NOTHER addition to our special recordings of " Opera sung in English," is to be found in this record. Malcolm McEachern sings the King's famous love song to Maritana in superb fashion, whilst on the reverse side it will be noted that some splendid opportunities for the resonance of his lower register occur. Louis Emnranuel's old song, " The Desert," is full of dramatic opportunities, none of which have been missed by this magnificent base. THE STRING QUARTET Idyll No. II. (from Three Idylls for String Quartet). Frank Bridge (Blue Label) Idyll No. Ill. (from Three Idylls for R-6110 10" 5/6 String Quartet). Frank Bridge

F RANK BRIDGE, one of the cleverest of modern British composers, has gained an excellent reputation both as composer and conductor. He has written a good deal of orchestral an I chamber music, and these two charming Idylls are delightful examples of his work in the latter direction.

One side of this record is in direct contrast to the other, the second Idyll containing a " triste " motif, and the third a joyous and spring-like theme. Needless to add, the London String Quartet's interpretations of these fairylike little pieces are flawless and full of originality.

LIONEL TERTIS (Viola) Reverie. (D'Anibrosio, Tertis) arr. . (a) Chanson Louis X111. (Couperin). (Blue Label) R-6111 10" 5i6 (b) Pavane. (Covperi):, are. Kreislee). With Piano Accompaniment

LIOI\EL TERTIS, who apart from his reputation as a soloist is so remarkably clever at adaptations of violin and 'cello pieces for his beautiful instrument, has an affection for D'Ambrosio's melodious compositions for the purpose, and this Reverie makes a most delightful Viola solo. On the reverse are two charming old-world pieces of Couperin, in which the gre

OI'U friends. The Criterion Male Quartet, are fuily up to their usual form in tone and balance and once more thcv have chosen a real " winner " in " Ole Uncle Moon." An unusual contrast is provided in this record, which has a fine ba,s solo on the other side. So full of low notes is " Davy Jones' Locker " that we keep on wondering whether Wilfred Glenn will be able to descend to that lowest of all we know is inevitable at the end of the song, but of course he gets it in fine style without " turning a hair." A wonderful selection of the latest British, American & Continental Dance favourites.

T HE May Bulletin contains a brighter galaxy of " winners " in the way of dance records than has probably ever before appeared in any one list, comprising as it does all the very latest " rages " in British, Continental and American Fox-trots, One-steps and Waltzes. Further than this, every one of them has some specially attractive instrumental feature which makes them desirable apart from their merit for dancing purposes. For instance, one side of M-1130 has a clever Uk'ulele refrain, whilst M-1131, " Sheba," and M-1132, " Little Rover," both introduce vocal choruses sung in a most attractive manner. There are clever Xylophone Solos in some of the French dance records, and a charming passage by violin and celeste occurs in the delightful waltz tune from " The Cousin from Nowhere " (M-1127). A great deal more could be written in praise of this particularly fine set of dance records. but just hear them and they will "speak for themselves.''
