• Heaven • Hell • Limbo O Limbo Contains Certain Long Forgotten Characters Like the Inferior Five, the Pre-Crisis Supergir Heaven Hell Limbo o Limbo contains certain long forgotten characters like The Inferior Five, the Pre-Crisis Supergirl, etc. Also contains characters we cannot legally use in stories at the present time like Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt, etc. The 5th Dimension (Zrfff) o Home to Mr. Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite.1 The Phantom Zone Pantheonia2 Olympus/Underworld The Dream Dimension Gemworld The House of Mystery and The House of Secrets Qward Earth Prime o Our world (Or some semblance thereof). 1 Here is my theory on both Bat-Mite and Mxy. Every incarnation of them in movies, television, and video games are the same persons just hopping around the multiverse. 2 My take on Grant Morrison’s Skyland. It is mostly the same thing, but with a fancier name. Earth-0 o This Earth contains the Pre-Flashpoint Universe minus a few minor alterations. Superman and Lois Lane are not married.3 . Cyborg does become a regular member of the Justice League. This version of the Legion of Superheroes is a hodgepodge of the other various versions. Joe Chill was never captured. The Justice League was formed after they stopped a preliminary invasion from Apokolips. 3 The reason why I favor this change from the New 52 is that I felt that their marriage wasn’t really going anywhere at the time of the reboot. Mostly because they were not having kids (and probably couldn’t without Lois Lane being killed via bukake.) . The current holder of the Black Canary name is the granddaughter of the Golden Age version, and her mother is a public advocate against superheroes despite briefly being the second Black Canary. Hippolyta never went back in time and became Wonder Woman. (However, that does not mean she did not encounter the Justice Society in their prime). Amazon’s Attack, Countdown, Cry for Justice, and some bits of Identity Crisis and Final Crisis never happened. Barbara Gordon has regained some mobility thanks to an experimental piece of technology. However, she cannot use it for very long, but she is still Oracle and makes a costume that is a mixture of her Batgirl uniform and the Oracle mask.4 . Every Black Lantern was resurrected at the end of Blackest Night.5 . Thanks to his exposure to the White spectrum of color, Deadman now has the ability to become corporeal. Beast Boy was originally green until he starts losing his powers. With the help of Animal Man, he was able to receive new powers and a new skin tone from The Red. Wally West becomes the living embodiment of the Speed Force. Martian shape-shifting is limited only by their original genders (with some exceptions). Read “K-Metal Canon” for Information regarding Krypton. 4 I based this on two things. First, in the Birds of Prey TV series, there was an artificial spine that Barbara in some episodes was able to walk temporary, and Two; there was a story that involved a cyber-terrorist holding people hostage via the Internet and Oracle’s avatar was basically her Batgirl uniform with the Oracle mask. 5 This idea is from Linkara. The Dan Garrett incarnation of The Blue Beatle made his debut in the 50s-70s alongside the Challengers of the Unknown, Cave Carson, The Blackhawks, The Sea Devils, and the first incarnation of the Doom Patrol. The Modern Age of Heroes started 15-20 years ago when Superman first went public. Superman and the other extra-terrestrial heroes form a company that slowly releases alien tech to the public. The people of Atlantis survived thanks to Aroin who gave the last of his powers to halt the destruction long enough to allow the constructions of domes for every city. Mermaids were a result of a genetic experiment to allow Atlantians to breath underwater. In a few rare cases, some Atlantians were born with not only the ability of breathing water and surviving great pressure, but also the telepathic gift of 6 communicating with virtually all forms of sea life. The Legion’s Time Bubble is heavily modified replica of Rip Hunter’s Time Sphere. The current Hawkman is more or less an amalgamation of both the Golden Age and Silver Age Hawkmen. Supergirl arrived on Earth shortly before Batgirl’s debut. They had a series of team-ups before Batgirl’s forced retirement. 6This still needs work. Earth-1 o A very peaceful, benign world with good heroes and evil villains with not a smidgen of gray to be found. This world is the Silver Age on steroids. Think Pleasantville with superheroes. The Superman of this world dies fighting his greatest foes leaving the Lois Lane of this world to marry a normal man. Earth-2 o This Earth contains the Post-Infinite Crisis Earth-2 minus a few minor alterations. Three of the original founding members of the Justice Society are dead. The only ones who are technically still alive are Alan Scott (Ring still keeps him young), Jay Garrick (Merged with the Speed Force but still helps out. Think Kingdom Come Flash), The Spectre, Dr. Fate (The Helmet of Nabu is pretty much the only thing keeping him alive), Carter Hall (Him and Shiera died in 1968, but were reincarnated so it still counts.) . Batman was killed in a battle with the Chemical King around the 80’s. Selina Wayne did not die but became this world’s Batwoman before retiring around the late 60’s. Dick Grayson abandons the title of Robin and became the hero Redwing. He also served as US Attorney General in the mid-to-late 80’s. He now serves as the JSI’s government liaison. Helena Wayne is still the Huntress, but she has made another person her ward and successor. After the death of his wife of natural causes, this world’s Superman revealed his secret identity and retired to roam the cosmos. There are a few historical divergent’s from the main DCU. Examples include a shorter Vietnam, an Independent Quebec, President Candy, etc. Earth-3 o This Earth is a hodgepodge of both the Pre-Crisis Earth-3 and the Antimatter Universe. Has similar historical events similar to the Pre-Crisis Earth-3. Exp. Benedict Arnold being the first US President, Abraham Lincoln shooting John Wilkes Booth, etc. This version of Ultraman was an astronaut sent from Earth to Krypton where when exposed to Anti- Kryptonite, he gained superpowers. Earth-4 o Home to the characters previously owned by Charlton Comics. Superheroes were outlawed in roughly a decade ago. The story Who Killed the Peacemaker? is in this universe. The characters personality traits are more or less diet versions of their Watchmen counterparts. (Exp. The Question’s philosophy is a mixture of Objectivism and Zen.) . The Question’s alter-ego, Vic Sage is this world’s equivalent of Alex Jones. Earth-5 o Home to the characters previously owned by Fawcett Comics. Billy Batson became Captain Marvel in 1940. The ghost of the wizard Shazam helped the restless spirit of Teth-Aadam cross over to the afterlife7, leaving Billy Batson to become the new Shazam. Captain Marvel Jr. became the new Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel became Marvel Woman. 7 Based on an event in Superman & Batman: Generations Earth-6 o Home to the characters previously owned Quality Comics . The Blackhawks retired in 1956. The current bearers of the name are an elite UN strike-force. Blackhawk Island is now a museum maintained by the Cheng family. Uncle Sam and Plastic Man are still alive. The main foes of the Freedom Fighters were the Gerechtigkeit Geschwader der Dreimächtepakt. The United States of this world was invaded on both sides by Germany and Japan during WW2. The Freedom Fighters were able to keep them from fully occupying the mainland long enough so that a stolen Nazi atomic bomb could be dropped on Nuremburg, killing the Nazi leaders. Josef Stalin was also killed during the Battle of Moscow. The world is now in a four-way cold war between the US, The British Imperial Federation, a Trotskyist Russia, and a pseudo-fascist China. Earth-6.5 o A world much like Earth 6 except the Axis won the war and Ubermensch rules Germania with firm, but gentle hand while Uncle Sam and The Freedom Fighters make the joint Nazi- Japanese occupation more and more difficult to maintain. Earth 8 o Home to the Just Imagine Universe. Earth-9 o Home to the Tangent Universe Earth-10 o Home to an intergalactic team of heroes known as the Justice Union of Earth. Based on an idea from Alex Ross. Earth-13 o A world shrouded in fog and twilight where the thin line between heroes and monsters become blurrier each time. The characters in this universe serve as both analogues of DC characters and classic movie monsters. Earth-16 o A world in which Batman organized a group of adolescent superheroes to perform covert operations. Based on the Young Justice Television series and related media. Earth-17 o A world where all the superheroes were part of a government experiment (What a stupid idea!). This world was later destroyed by a mad Overman. Earth-18 o Victorian Steampunk world . Contains elements of Gotham by Gaslight, Justice Riders, Amazonia, and Age of Wonder. Home to the Grand Army of Justice8. 8 Name was inspired by the Grand Army of the Republic veterans group. Earth-23 o A world in which an accident in 1959 led to an all-powerful superhero that helped achieved American victory in Vietnam while all other costumed vigilantes were outlawed in 1977.

WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.
