This "three-day weekend" trip will feature a ride behind British I\!onday Columbia Railway's steam engine "Royal Hudson" on Sunday from 30 May North V�couver to Squamish and return, plus transportation from Vancouver, BC to Portland, Oregon on Monday (via PNW Chapter's sleeper-lounge car "Mt Hood"). Also, the Mt Hood can be used as a "hotel" for up to three nights. More details available on the flyer included with this issue. Number 203 ROYALTY COMES TO THE WEST By Ed IImlle1 ".:' During March and April t!).e Province of British Columbia's famous "Royal Hudson" st'liJlD train made a 3,200 mile journey down the Vlest Coast of the United States from Vanqouver, BC to Los Angeles, California and return. Leaving Vancouver on 19 March .it returned home on·, 14 April without having missed an opening time or having any mechanical work Ferformed on it. While· on display an estimated 77,000 people walked through the four display cars to look at the "Age of Stesm" exhibit and view the wax figures of the royal family. ' .. The train was assembled at the·.Canadian Pacific's Drake Street yards in Van­ couver, BC·using elem ents ·of the regular excursion train and cars from the Provincial·Mussum Display train. Bringing up the markers on the special train was the "Mount Hpoc!") a lO1.Ulge-sleeping car owned by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of NRHS. This was the private car of the Premier of the Province, but had been constructed in 1923 and thus was more ' _ than 40 years ,old - too old to be used in interchange, service. " . , ' and the volunteers lived ,with the car. ' OIl: 4 March the:'air brake parts arrived· from Salt Lake City and were iIDIDediately installed on the car. Late that eve­ ning, with repairs completed, the car waa moved to Union Station and put on services. On Saturday, 5 March the car departed Portland behind the morning Amtrak train to Seattle. At Vancouver, BC it \'las added to the train and 220 power was run to the car for the battery charger that would be needed while the car was sitting on dis­ play. Other modifications to the car included the installation of a new holding tank toilet in the main restroom by Chuck Lund, Gary Oslund, and Jim Gilmore during the layover in Portland on 21 March. The electrical work in­ stalled earlier by John Holloway and Chuck had worked perfectly on the trip south from Vancouver. The 2860 and its eight car train left Vancouver from the old British Columbia Electric's Kitsilano shops over the rails of the British Columbia Hydro to New Westminster where the interchange was made with the Burlington Northern. A trip over the BC Hydro with a steam train is quite a journey since the line is the old interurban route to Marpole and points south. It wound through people's back yards, stopping at street crossings, passing through Safeway parking lots as well as cutting across corners of parks and empty lots. The two BC Hydro diesels were needed to shove on the rear of the train since the line has a grade of 4. 5 percent in some places. The train stopped at Blaine, Washington for US Customs inspec��On: ,and the two tenders were filled with water. A fast run south on the BN tracks ' was made vdth railfans in hot pursuite. A maintenance crew from the Kingdome helped :Jtring the necessary fire hose from their hydrant over the cyclone fence to the engine to water the tenders. On Sunday, 20 March the train departed from Seattle for the 186 mile trip to Portland, Oregon. During the trip one of Pacific Northwest Chapter's more vocal members was seen getting a ticket from a Washington State Highway Pa­ trolman. Arrival into Portland vias ontime. Monday, 21 March was a day to do things that had been overlooked while setting up the train. A conversion plug to go from 2 inch Canadian fire hose to 2.5 inch American standard was purchased.

The Roundhouse will become a feature pavilion at Expo 86, and then be developed into today’s Roundhouse Community Centre and 374 Pavilion. This series of twelve hot chocolate mugs depicts the develop - ment of the steam locomotive in Canada from the 0-6-0 "Samson", to the CPR 2-10-4 #8000. The mugs are being offered by the Quaker Oats Company of Cana­ da to salute Canada's Centennial, and the part played by the rail­ ways and their steam locomotives in furthering the pro ~ ress of the nation. Each cup pictures an authentic locomotive design -- one shows a Canadian Northern 2-8-0, a type of locomotive that made a major contribution to the country's prairie economy by moving grain from the Western provinces to the Lakehead -- another shows one of the Canadian Pacific's ubiquitous D-10 engines. There are 12 different locomotives in the series - each a col­ lector's item. The reproductions are precisely etched in decora­ tive colours and trimmed with 22k gold. Thurman died April 18, 2020, at the age of 93. For several years, he lived at St. Martin's in the Pines where I picked him up for Mid-South meetings. He recently moved from an apartment to a room adjacent to his wife, Virginia, in Cottage A-Skilled Nursing. He and Virginia had been life-long train railfans, especially steam, and had rid- den many trains across North America and Europe. A gentleman with several hobbies, Thurman had a lifelong interest in World War II airplanes and working on Ford automobiles. I observed that we were not alone in our interests in pipe organs and trains. Traveling about the country to experience some of the remaining theatre or- gans, we met many who also were interested in trains. When we’ve held organ shows in Birmingham, some of the attendees went out of the way to ride a train to town.

    The Shaughnessy Files Photographer Jim Shaughnessy finds steam and diesel in Quebec, Illinois, and New York State In service to the Royals Even in commuter service, Canadian Pacific’s famous Hudsons received the best of care By Jim Shaughnessy • Photos by the author very steam locomotive possessed its own air of class. They all were regal, but only a select few— Canadian Pacific’s semi-streamlined 4-6-4’s— were Royal. I was fortunate enough to become acquainted with these great engines, and the men who cared for them. ECP’s 65 Hudsons were designed by legendary Chief of Motive Power and Rolling Stock Henry Blaine Bowen. The first ones, H1a’s 2800-2809 and H1b’s 2810-2819 of 1929-30, were superb performers but conventional in appearance. However, the next batch, delivered in 1937 and mechanically similar to the earlier H1’s, bore a distinctive, semi-stream- lined look that became Bowen’s trademark. In addition to their clean, uncluttered styling, these H1c’s (Nos. 2820-2849) were finished in black, maroon, gunmetal gray, and gold trim. Nearly identical H1d’s 2850-2859 came in 1938, fol- lowed by the final five, H1e’s 2860-2864, in 1940. As one of CP’s newest passenger engines, in 1939 H1d 2850 was selected to power the Royal Train of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth across Canada. The 2850 wore a special livery for the assignment that included small crowns on each running-board skirt. In the wake of 2850’s fine per- formance on the train, Bowen requested, and received, Royal permission to apply crowns to all 45 streamlined 4-6-4’s, In September 1958, when the few steam locomotives still active in which became known as Royal Hudsons.

    The 1939 Royal Tour and the Royal Hudson Locomotive No. 2850 This visit made history for the entire country. For the first time, the British monarch set foot on Canadian soil. He crossed the country from coast to coast, most of it aboard a train specially put together for the occasion. The two major Canadian railways, Canadian Pacific and Canadian National, will share the honour of pulling the royal train with their locomotives. The trip was a suggestion made by Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King and Governor General Vincent Massey at the coronation of King George VI in London in 1937. The choice of train travel gives as many Canadians as possible the chance to see the King and Queen. It is also an excuse to seek the support of Canada and the United States in the face of the threat of war with Germany. The Atlantic crossing took nine days. They arrived in Quebec City two days later than planned because of bad conditions: thick fog, huge waves and icebergs. To make up for lost time, the couple spent less time in Ottawa and Kingston because the itinerary was very tight. The trip lasts 29 days in America, not including the boat trip across the Atlantic Ocean. They left Halifax on June 15, 1939, and returned to England. Arrival of the royal couple in Quebec City aboard the "Empress of Australia", CRHA/Exporail, Canadian Pacific Railway Company Fonds King George VI (1895-1952) and his wife Queen Elizabeth (1900-2002) visited the country while their two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth (1926- ___) 13 and Margaret (1930-2002) 8, stayed in England.

Royal Hudson Live Steam - Alcohol Fired NOTES: Designed by Henry Bowen and introduced in 1937, the semi-streamlined Hudson was selected to haul the 1939 Royal Train that carried King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on their journey across Canada. No 2850 was chosen and was turned out in a spectacular Royal Blue and stainless steel livery to match the 12-coach blue and silver train. So impressive was 2850’s performance on the 3224 mile trip that Canadian Pacific applied to Buckingham Palace for permission to officially designate the class as Royal Hudson, a request that was granted. Subsequently all 45 members of the class carried a cast Royal crown on their front running board skirts. The Royal blue livery on 2850 only lasted for the seven months of the summer of 1939 and after exhibition at the New York World’s Fair it was replaced by the standard passenger livery of maroon panels with grey boiler cladding and cylinder covers, which it has to be said is still a spectacular livery! Although designed as express passenger engines and capable of over 90mph, the Royal Hudsons were also used extensively on freight duties, but it was on the prestigious, passenger trains such as the daily Dominion that they made a name for themselves with 1250 mile runs between Calgary and Ft.

    BCR Excursion Trains March 26 th, 2010 The most significant being the ROYAL HUDSON STEAM TRAIN which lasted 25 years. It ran from June 20 th, 1974 until the end of October 1999. The 2860 was replaced for the 2000 season. The following is a brief history of this train: During the steam era almost every type of steam locomotive had a class designation which was determined by the wheel arrangement, thus a HUDSON had a 4-6-4 wheel configuration while a NORTHERN's configuration was 4-8-4 & a CONSOLIDATION was a 2-8-0 etc. In 1939 King George V1 & Queen Elizabeth visited Canada & CPR engine Hudson #2850 was assigned to handle the Royal Train from coast to coast. The Royal Couple were very impressed that a single steam locomotive could travel that long distance without any significant maintenance or change out along the way. The public relations department at CPR decided to capitalize on the memorable occasion & permission was granted by the King to name the engine class "ROYAL HUDSON" The streamlined version namely engines 2820 to 2864 from that day on have worn a Royal Crown on both sides their running boards. During the late 1940's Diesel locomotives began appearing on North American Railroads & by the late 50's most of CPR's steam engines were retired and set out on back tracks awaiting scrapping. In the early 1960's a group of Vancouver rail enthusiasts visited the scrap line in Winnipeg & discovered that engine #2860 was still in tact & cosmetically looked very good.

The membership will be asked to approve the integration of the 374 Station Society into WCRA, the 2004 Financial Statements, the 2005 Budget, an increase in board size to 16, and to approve the slate of Directors for 2005.
