CHAPTER 1 Foundation for a Science of Data Visualization In his book The End of Science, science writer John Horgan (1997) argues that science is finished except for the mopping up of details. He makes a good case where physics is con- cerned. In that discipline, the remaining deep problems may involve generating so much energy as to require the harnessing of entire stars. Similarly, biology has its foundations in DNA and genetics and is now faced with the infinite but often tedious complexity of mapping genes into proteins through intricate pathways. What Horgan fails to recognize is that cognitive science has fundamental problems that are still to be solved. In particular, the mechanisms of the construction and storage of knowledge remain open questions. He implicitly adopts the physics-centric view of science, which holds that physics is the queen of sciences, and in descending order come chemistry, then biology, with psychology barely acknowledged as a science at all. In this pantheon, sociology is regarded as somewhere on a par with astrology. This attitude is short-sighted. Chemistry builds on physics, enabling our understanding of materials; biology builds on chemistry, enabling us to understand the much greater complexity of living organisms; and psychology builds on neurophysiology, enabling us to understand the processes of cognition. At each level is a separate discipline greater in complexity and level of difficulty than those beneath. It is difficult to conceive of a value scale for which the mechanisms of thought are not of fundamentally greater interest and importance than the interaction of subatomic particles. Those who dismiss psychology as a pseudo-science have not being paying attention. Over the past few decades, enormous strides have been made in identifying the brain structures and cognitive mechanisms that have enabled humans to create the huge body of knowledge that now exists. But we need to go one step further and recognize that people with machines, and in groups, are much more cognitively powerful than a single person alone with his or her thoughts. This has been true for a long time. Artifacts such as paper, writing, and geometry instruments have been cognitive tools for centuries. It is not necessary to take the cultural relativists' view to see that sciences are built using socially constructed symbol systems. The review process employed 2 INFORMATION VISUALIZATION: PERCEPTION FOR DESIGN by scientific journals is an obvious example of a social process critical to the construction of knowledge. As Hutchins (1995)so effectively pointed out, thinking is not something that goes on entirely, or even mostly, inside people's heads. Little intellectual work is accomplished with our eyes and ears closed. Most cognition is done as a kind of interaction with cognitive tools, pencils and paper, calculators, and increasingly, computer-based intellectual supports and information systems. Neither is cognition mostly accomplished alone with a computer. It occurs as a process in systems containing many people and many cognitive tools. Since the beginning of science,

Four HCI Conferences Nathalie Henry INRIA/LRI, Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, France and the University of Sydney, NSW, Australia Howard Goodell Niklas Elmqvist Jean-Daniel Fekete INRIA/LRI, Université Paris-Sud, Orsay, France We present a visual exploration of the field of human–computer interaction (HCI) through the author and article metadata of four of its major conferences: the ACM conferences on Computer-Human Interaction (CHI), User Interface Software and Technology, and Advanced Visual Interfaces and the IEEE Symposium on Information Visualization. This article describes many global and local patterns we discovered in this data set, together with the exploration process that produced them. Some expected patterns emerged, such as that—like most social networks— coauthorship and citation networks exhibit a power-law degree distribution, with a few widely collaborating authors and highly cited articles. Also, the prestigious and long-established CHI conference has the highest impact (citations by the others). Unexpected insights included that the years when a given conference was most selective are not correlated with those that produced its most highly referenced arti- cles and that influential authors have distinct patterns of collaboration. An interest- ing sidelight is that methods from the HCI field—exploratory data analysis by information visualization and direct-manipulation interaction—proved useful for this analysis.

Introduction At the intersection of technological change and economic growth there is no measure more important than productivity. Defined as the ratio of output to input, productivity tracks the efficiency of labor. Increases in productivity allow us to produce more from less, leading to rising in standards of living. Productivity growth is used implicitly and explicitly as a justification for interventions in markets, governance, law, education, and many other social fields. In this essay I show how computers and information visualization reconfigured the concept of productivity to fit emerging modes of knowledge work in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I describe the historical emergence of information visualization as a field of computer research, focusing specifically on Information Foraging Theory, a model for visual human- computer interaction. Information Foraging Theory drew on analogies from ecology, psychology, and economics and helped clarify the relationship between computers and productivity in three specific ways: it adapted neoclassical economic categories of scarcity and utility to the domain of information; it incorporated creative, non-mechanistic frameworks of human-computer interaction (HCI); and, through ecological analogy, it grounded adaptive models of knowledge work in economic values of maximization and efficiency. Information Foraging Theory redefined white-collar workers as “informavores” who forage in graphical information environments to produce meaning and value. I have divided my observations into three parts. First, as bef ts my training in human- computer interaction, I start with a brief task analysis and try to answer the question, “What’s the point?” Then I derive a set of design require- ments to answer the question, “What makes a the- sis great?” Finally, I get to the issue of execution: “How do you actually get it done?” But, wait, there’s more! For that reason, the investigation and design of age- inclusive input methods for computer interaction is much needed and relevant due to an ageing population. The advances of motion sensing technologies and mid-air gesture interaction reinvented how individuals can interact with computer interfaces and this modality of input method is often deemed as a more “natural” and “intuitive” than using purely traditional input devices such mouse interaction. Although explored in gaming and entertainment, the suitability of mid-air gesture interaction for older users in particular is still little known. The purpose of this research is to investigate the potential of mid-air gesture interaction to facilitate computer use for older users, and to address the challenges that older adults may face when interacting with gestures in mid-air. This doctoral research is presented as a collection of papers that, together, develop the topic of ageing and computer interaction through mid-air gestures. The initial point for this research was to establish how older users differ from younger users and focus on the challenges faced by older adults when interacting with mid-air gesture interaction.

Paris-Sud Abstract We present a visual exploration of the field of human-computer interaction through the author and article metadata of four of its major conferences: the ACM conferences on Computer-Human Interaction (CHI), User Inter- face Software and Technology (UIST) and Advanced Visual Interfaces (AVI) and the IEEE Symposium on Information Visualization (InfoVis). This ar- ticle describes many global and local patterns we discovered in this dataset, together with the exploration process that produced them. Some expected patterns emerged, such as that | like most social networks | co-authorship and citation networks exhibit a power-law degree distribution, with a few widely-collaborating authors and highly-cited articles. Also, the prestigious and long-established CHI conference has the highest impact (citations by the others). Unexpected insights included that the years when a given confer- ence was most selective are not correlated with those that produced its most highly-referenced articles, and that influential authors have distinct patterns of collaboration. An interesting sidelight is that methods from the HCI field | exploratory data analysis by information visualization and direct-manipulation interac- tion | proved useful for this analysis. They allowed us to take an open- ended, exploratory approach, guided by the data itself. As we answered our original questions, new ones arose; as we confirmed patterns we expected, we discovered refinements, exceptions, and fascinating new ones.
