PAYWALL ACCESS Email: [email protected] Password: password1 CALIFORNIA’S WILDFIRE SIEGE How the San Francisco Chronicle covered the record-setting blazes of 2020 In August and September, we saw 7.8 million page views to our interactive fire tracker project, including individual pages dedicated to the LNU Lightning Complex and Glass fires. If there’s a typical breaking news story, this wasn’t it. This was a cascading di- saster that unfolded not in an hour or a day, but over two months, relentlessly. Starting in mid-August, a siege of dry lightning unleashed fires unprecedented even by California standards. Flames blasted into rural towns and cities. Smoke choked the sky. By season’s end, 9,600 fires had burned a record-setting 4.4 mil- lion acres, destroyed 10,000-plus homes and businesses, and killed 33 people. Though the stage had been set by drought, climate change and government failure, California was not prepared. There weren’t enough firefighters and evacuees confront- ed the spreading coronavirus. But the Chronicle staff was prepared, after spending the previous three years reorganizing its entire newsroom around fire season. The Chronicle staff — while covering a pandemic and an election and coping with the restrictions of remote work — documented the fires aggressively, 24 hours a day, with a varied and innovative array of journalism that gave readers critical informa- tion even as it raised difficult questions about the state’s future. This included: • On-the-ground reporting and a drumbeat of enterprise and investigative work; • Vivid photography and videography; • Nonstop “live updates” and news alerts; • Multimedia tools including fire, air-quality and power-outage trackers; • Podcasts and social media delivered in real-time from the field; • Explainers on what readers needed to know to understand the story and be safe; • Deep narrative storytelling that illuminated the human costs. -

If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 10, Issue 25 February 8, 2016 Revisiting New Zealand Pinot Noir on the Occasion of Spectacular 2013 Vintage The New Zealand wine industry is thriving in a relatively small country that depends on exports for its survival. According the 2015 New Zealand Winegrowers Annual Report, the value of New Zealand wine exports grew 7% in 2015 to reach a new record of $1.42 billion. Three markets, Australia, UK and USA each account for around one quarter of exports (the USA is the largest export market by value) with significant future growth potential evident in North American and China. New Zealand wine is exported to more than 90 countries. Exports of Pinot Noir nearly doubled from 2008 to 2015. New Zealand is still renowned for Sauvignon Blanc which accounts for the vast majority of the country’s wine production, but Pinot Noir, and even Chardonnay, is attracting the most attention from wine connoisseurs. As Nick Stock, Australia Gourmet Traveller Wine, pointed out in April 2015, “The attention given to New Zealand Pinot Noir is well above what’s deserved in terms of the amount made, but factor in their quality across a range of styles and it’s easy to justify the hype.” Refer to chart below for percentage of production by varietal. From 2006 to 2015, the number of New Zealand wineries has increased from 530 to 673 and the number of growers from 87 to 762. Total producing vineyard area in 2015 was 88,609 acres. Pinot Noir acreage has increased from 10,039 acres in 2006 to 13,748 acres in 2015 (nearly equal to the 14,027 acres of Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley. -

My impression couldn't have been more off! Many years later, I live so close to Napa and Sonoma that I go about twice a month -- and have explored wineries and tasting rooms all over California. What I love about it is that it offers something for everyone. Whether you're a newbie wine connoisseur or an aficionado looking for new places to explore, I bet this wine country extravaganza has something for you. Let's start with Napa; since as the most famous name of California wine country, it's a great place to begin our adventure. There's much rivalry between those who love Napa and those who swing Sonoma. I'm here to tell you that you can like both. And with all the talk of getting off the beaten path (we'll get there), I thought it'd be fun to start with the classics. First-time visitors to the area should start with a leisurely drive up Highway 29. Most of the wineries along that stretch don't require reservations, and all the big names are there: Robert Mondavi, Domaine Chandon, Cakebread and Beringer. -

RESOLUTION R2017- 019 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NAPA, STATE OF CALIFORNIA, APPROVING THE OPERATING POLICY FOR THE NAPA VALLEY TOURISM IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT LOCAL GOVERNING COMMITTEE AND CONSENTING TO THE UPDATED NAPA VALLEY TOURISM IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT MANAGEMENT DISTRICT PLAN WHEREAS, on June 15, 2010, the Napa County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution # 2010- 72 forming the Napa Valley Tourism Improvement District ( NVTID) for a five- year term; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Napa consented to the formation of the NVTID with its adoption of Resolution R2010- 31 on March 16, 2010 ( Consenting Resolution); and WHEREAS, the Consenting Resolution provided that any substantive change to the NVTID Management District Plan for 2010-2015 ( Original Plan) that affected assessments within the City shall not be effective without the City Council consenting to the changes; and WHEREAS, on June 10, 2014, the Napa County Board of Supervisors adopted Resolution No. 2014- 64 which renewed the NVTID for a 10 -year term commencing on June 16, 2015 ( Renewal Resolution); and WHEREAS, the Renewal Resolution adopted a new Management District Plan for July 2015 through June 2025 ( Renewal Plan), which modified the Original Plan' s composition of the City of Napa' s Tourism Improvement District Local Governing Committee ( Napa TID) by decreasing the number of City representatives from two to one; increasing the number of lodging representatives by one; and redefining the Napa Chamber representative to be a representative -

The late vintners and philanthropists Margrit and Robert Mondavi were instrumental in transforming Napa Valley into a wine, food, and culture mecca. by Jeanne Lawrence NAPA VALLEY – “SALUTE, SANTE, CHEERS, MARGRIT! Tonight we raise our glass to you!” read the invitation from Festival Napa Valley, for a tribute to Margrit Biever Mondavi this past July. The 91-year-old widow of vintner Robert Mondavi, who is credited with putting California wines on the world map, Margrit was honored for her more than four decades of dedicated work to help fine art, music, food, and wine flourish in the California wine country. I flew in for the occasion to be with my dear friend, knowing she had been ill and fearing this Festival might be her last. Indeed, just weeks later, on September 2, Margrit’s remarkable life came to an end. Though each of the ten evening events at Festival 2016 was extraordinary, the one honoring Margrit at the Far Niente Winery was to me the most extraordinary of all. Margrit Mondavi, one of Napa’s most revered and influential figures, showcased fine food and wine, and encouraged and supported great vintners, chefs, artists, and musicians. Robert and Margrit Mondavi celebrated his 90th birthday in June 2003, five years before he passed away. During their 28-year marriage, they traveled the world to promote California wines.
