  • Coronavirus Letter
The Right Reverend Tim Dakin Dear all We are wri4ng to assure you of our prayers at this unse;led 4me as we face so many challenges resul4ng from the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid 19). In the last 24 hours we have begun to face even more significant changes to our lives as we take new precau4ons to fight the spread of infec4on, and rally to support essen4al services and protect the most vulnerable members of our communi4es. You will all be considering the impact these changes will have on your work, your health, your ministry and your rela4onships with friends and family members. We are praying for you; please pray for us and for the church leaders who share responsibility for the care of your community. In the light of the most recent advice from our government, we know that these new measures will also have a huge effect on the life of churches across the diocese and the whole country. We are working hard to ensure the con4nuity of our mission and ministry across the diocese throughout this 4me, and we are expec4ng further guidance from the Na4onal Church in the coming hours. We will update you again today by email once that has been received. A con4ngency planning group of the senior staff met this morning, and the Diocesan offices already have effec4ve con4nuity plans to ensure the best possible provision of support in key areas of our church’s life. Clergy and ministry teams in parishes and other sectors have been working 4relessly on local con4ngency plans.

  • Suff Bishop Basingstoke Role Description 3 [1]
Suffragan Bishop Role Description Role Title Suffragan Bishop of Basingstoke Introduction As a diocese we are committed to rooting ourselves in Living the mission of Jesus. We have begun a strategic process to deliver a mission-shaped diocese, so that parochial, pastoral and new forms of pioneering and radical ministry will be infused with the life of the Spirit of mission. It’s a life lived out in three dimensions: § Passionate personal spirituality; § Pioneering faith communities; and, § Prophetic global citizens. It is essential that this role description is read in conjunction with the document entitled Episcopacy in the Diocese of Winchester. Overview and scope of the role The Diocesan Bishop of the See of Winchester has overall oversight of the life of the diocese - its mission, worship, pastoral care and teaching. He has particular responsibility for mission development and for supporting the whole mission of the Diocese and its ecumenical and civic relations. In the Diocese of Winchester a suffragan bishop is one ‘to whom the diocesan bishop delegates (both formally and informally) varying degrees of responsibility. Some functions and responsibilities are formally delegated by the diocesan bishop to the suffragan bishop through an instrument issued under Section 13 of the Dioceses, Pastoral and Mission Measure 2007. The instrument names tasks that occur on a regular basis, as well as specifying what tasks the suffragan bishop may carry out when the diocesan bishop is absent from his see. The diocesan bishop may delegate other tasks as he wishes and may request that the suffragan bishop undertakes portfolio responsibilities. It is important to note that no Area Scheme applies to the Diocese of Winchester.

  • Bishop of Winchester Steps Back After Diocesan Rebellion by a STAFF REPORTER 20 MAY 2021
Bishop of Winchester steps back after diocesan rebellion by A STAFF REPORTER 20 MAY 2021 DIOCESE OF WINCHESTER The Bishop of Winchester, Dr Tim Dakin THE Bishop of Winchester, Dr Tim Dakin, has “stepped back” from work for six weeks after he was threatened with a vote of no confidence at the next diocesan synod. On Tuesday evening, the Suffragan Bishop of Southampton, in Winchester diocese, the Rt Revd Debbie Sellin, announced: “Bishop Tim has today informed me that he will be stepping back from his role as Bishop of Winchester for the next six weeks, so that he can focus on discussions about future leadership and governance reform in the diocese.” The letter gives no further details, but it is understood that between 20 and 30 senior church members in the diocese, clergy and laity, threatened to pass a vote of no confidence in his leadership at the diocesan synod. The letter also states that Bishop Sellin, who has been in post for less two years, has been asked to lead the diocese. The reason for this is that the senior suffragan bishop in the diocese, the Bishop of Basingstoke, the Rt Revd David Williams, is said to be in sympathy with the protesters, and has also stepped back. He is said to have represented the protesters’ views to both Dr Dakin and Lambeth Palace, which is involved in the discussions. A spokesperson for the Church of England said on Thursday: “As the diocese of Winchester has already announced, Bishop Tim Dakin has stepped back for a period of six weeks, so that issues raised re: leadership and governance reform in the diocese can be addressed.

  • CNI -March 13
March 13 ! CNI ! Stranmillis proposes universities move teacher training to its Belfast site Management and staff at Stranmillis College have proposed that Queen's and Ulster universities move their teacher training departments to the Stranmillis site. BBC News - The proposal is in a letter from Professor Sir Desmond Rea, the chair of Stranmillis' governing body, to the vice- chancellors of both universities. [email protected] Page !1 March 13 The letter also says that St Mary's should also be invited to move to Stranmillis in south Belfast. The letter was written on 19 February. That was a week after Employment and Learning Minister Stephen Farry was overruled by the executive in his attempt to remove more than £2m from the budgets of St Mary's and Stranmillis colleges. St Mary's University College and Stranmillis University College are the two main teacher training providers in Northern Ireland. The majority of their students are trained to teach in primary schools. Queen's University and Ulster University also provide teacher training, mainly for those seeking to teach in the post-primary sector. In the letter, Prof Rea invites both universities "to move their interests in teacher education onto the Stranmillis site". With regard to St Mary's, he goes on to write that: "We would also propose that QUB [Queen's University Belfast], UU [Ulster University] and SUC [Stranmillis University College] extend the same invitation to St Mary's. [email protected] Page !2 March 13 "Should the invitation be declined, we would then propose that the three institutions move forward" to implement a Northern Ireland Institute of Education at Stranmillis.
