Archdeacon of Dorking Paul Bryer to take up new post in Cornwall The Archdeacon of Dorking, Paul Bryer, is leaving Guildford this summer, to take up a new post as Archdeacon of Cornwall in the Diocese of Truro. Paul has served as Archdeacon of Dorking since 2014. After serving a curacy at St Stephen’s Tonbridge in the Diocese of Rochester, Paul moved to the Diocese of Guildford in 1994 becoming vicar at St Mary’s Camberley and then St Paul’s Dorking, where he also went on to serve as Rural Dean of Dorking. As archdeacon Paul has helped steer the Diocese of Guildford in a strategic and missional direction. Especially focused on resourcing and releasing parishes and deaneries for mission and ministry he has pioneered initiatives to support the health and wellbeing of clergy. The Bishop of Guildford, Andrew Watson, said, “I wish Paul and his wife Fiona God’s richest blessing as they move to their beloved Cornwall. I have sensed – with them – that it’s been the wind of the Spirit that's been blowing them in a westerly direction. The new Bishop of Truro will certainly be blessed to have such an experienced, prayerful and supportive archdeacon at his side.” Read the story. Safe Car Wash app records 900 cases of potential modern slavery in hand car washes The Safe Car Wash App, launched in June 2018 by the Church of England’s Clewer Initiative, has surfaced over 900 suspected cases of modern slavery in hand car washes. The Safe Car Wash app, which allows drivers to respond to a check list of key factors that may suggest labour exploitation in hand car washes, has been downloaded 8,225 times since its launch last year. Between June and December 2018 there were 2,271 completed entries using the app, with 41%, or 930 cases, where after responding to a number of questions, users were told there was a likelihood of modern slavery at the hand car wash. They were then asked to call the Modern Slavery Helpline and their findings were shared in real time with police and the Gangmasters’ and Labour Abuse Authority. In the Diocese of Guildford, there were 73 reports through the Safe Car Wash app which have been shared with local police, to add to their intelligence picture as they tackle modern slavery in the region. If you haven’t downloaded the Safe Car Wash app yet, go to your smartphone’s app store and search ‘Safe Car Wash’ to download it now. Read the story .
