A VERY BRIEF STORY OF THE 1963-1964

The Studebaker Corporation appointed Mr. to the position of President in 1961. He was tasked with phasing out automotive production, the only division that wasn't earning a profit. As Mr. Egbert settled into this position, he began to think the division might be saved. This was in opposition to his directive, but he was able to effect some changes anyway. He thought that perhaps a new car might help. He was thinking of sporty car with performance that would appeal to a younger market. He contacted Raymond Lowey, a noted industrial designer of the time to see what his team might be able to do with a limited budget. Mr. Lowey's firm had designed several cars for Studebaker and was a familiar name to the Corporation. Lowey put together a team of designers, sequestered them in a residence in Palm Springs, and in a very short time had a design that would become the Avanti. Mr. Egbert was able to convince a skeptical board to approve the project, so now the task of making it real was begun. although the body was entirely new, budget restraints required using an existing chassis and drive train. it was decided to construct the body from fiberglass to save development time and costs. the engine was treated to mild performance upgrades including a supercharger option. This was sourced from Paxton Products, a division of the Corporation. Andy Granitelli was the head of this division and was instrumental in developing the engines performance. The car was introduced in mid-1962 as a 1963 model. Many enthusiastic persons placed orders for them, but production was delayed due to numerous problems with the body. It was almost a year before production began in earnest. By this time many people cancelled their orders and purchased other makes, notably the new Corvette Sting Ray, and Buicks all new Rivera. The Avanti was expensive, beyond the reach of the "younger" audience that Egbert hoped to reach. In the end, production was 4600 + cars, 800+ being 1964 models. Due to poor health, Egbert resigned his position. his replacement accomplished what Egbert did not. In late December 1963 the South Bend operation was shut down. The Corporation Still had an assembly plant in Canada, but the Avanti, Hawk and trucks could not be built there. The Avanti in its entirety was purchased from Studebaker, and in 1965 the newly formed Avanti Motor Corporation began producing the Avanti II. Under several different owners the mark existed until the early 2000's.
