SCOTLAND’S SPORTING & PROPERTY SPECIALISTS

2011/12 HOUSES | CASTLES | SPORTING ESTATES photo: Glyn Satterley Welcome to the 2011/12 brochure!

I am sitting on top of a hill near my home in East Lothian, near Edinburgh, looking out across the Lammermuir Hills and reflecting on what has been a fantastic 2010 sporting season in . The green shoots of spring are emerging and Scotland is gradually coming alive! It’s a great feeling having a spring, summer and autumn ahead of us and with so much out there to do and see. I’m getting excited about a trip to the Outer in June to fish my way through the islands of , South & , Harris and Lewis. Long evenings, great fishing, breathtaking scenery!

Sporting Salmon catches have been at an all-time high on many of our Scottish rivers. The northern rivers including the Thurso, Alness, Helmsdale, Halladale have all experienced remarkable catches and many records broken. One angler had 12 fish to his rod in a day, 80 fish on a beat in a week, over 3000 fish caught on the Thurso in 2010, the best ever for 100 years! The grouse shooting season across northern England and Scotland has also been very positive with some of the best records since 1992. There is real hope and genuine excitement that recent grouse management innovations are paying dividends and the peaks and troughs are a thing of the past. Despite the hard winter many estates are reporting very encouraging spring counts and a low worm burden so let us hope for a good spring. These healthy reports have resulted in a strong demand to head north once again, to enjoy some great sport in 2011.

Family holidays Scotland is still a top destination for a family holiday with so much to do and see. Hills, mountains, rivers, lochs and sea. Breathtaking scenery, some of the finest golf courses in the world, deserted sandy beaches and as you know we have the best portfolio of country houses, castles and sporting lodges to offer you.

Short breaks Don’t forget we can recommend some fantastic locations for short breaks or long weekends, catering for large or small parties.

We look forward to hearing from you and arranging your memorable holiday in 2011! Call us today on 0131 476 6500.

Yours sincerely

OWNING LAND IN SCOTLAND “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is to my mind a rather better and more expressive version of the more hackneyed alternative and nowhere does it have greater relevance than in the realm of Scottish landownership where arguably the greatest ailment is misunderstanding.

Misunderstanding occurs at many levels. There is often In our superficial era of sound-bite and celebrity it has significant misunderstanding (or perhaps more accurately never been more important to combat misunderstanding – a lack of understanding) amongst the general public and and for landowners to be properly represented. The latest politicians about what Scottish landowners do in terms of Scottish Wildlife Estates Initiative recently launched by supporting employment and local infrastructure, pursuing SRPBA is a prime of example of exactly this in action. conservation and environmental initiatives and working It is a bold move to help demonstrate the role Scottish towards an appropriate balance in wildlife management sporting estates play in delivering a wide range of benefits and biodiversity. to Scotland. Going to the Hill

The new book from Glyn Satterley. A 20 year anniversary release cataloging Scottish sport in fantastic black and white photography. I am sure that you will recall Glyn Satterley’s previous book “Highland Game“ which was first published in 1992, has just sold out of its 5th reprint. Apart from providing some truly memorable and iconic images, this publication also gave many people a masterful, largely pictorial insight into numerous (sometimes idiosyncratic) aspects of the Highland Sporting Estate that many people had never seen before. Most importantly it was a book that could be picked up at any time, again and again and on each occasion one would discover something new and fascinating.

Over the course of the coming year Glyn will be visiting some of Scotland’s most prestigious Sporting Estates, capturing those magnificent and unforgettable Scottish scenes and updating those iconic images of people, places and practices, in preparation for his exciting new hardback called “Going to the Hill”. Unlike the previous book, this one will look at Estates right across Scotland, including The Borders.

“Going to The Hill” will achieve wide acclaim and we are looking forward to helping Glyn launch his new book at Bonhams, Edinburgh in the spring of 2012. We are extremely excited by the prospect of this forthcoming publication, which will undoubtedly be instrumental in encouraging a great many people from both home and overseas, to visit and participate in the truly unique experience of the Scottish Sporting Estate. THE SCOTTISH CONNECTION

In common with many Englishmen I tend to regard Scotland as my ancestral home. In fact my 16th Century forbears were French Huguenots, our family going by the name Pardieu (By God). The Pardieu clan escaped to Scotland from France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, where they found not only a safe haven from religious persecution but work as blacksmiths, for they were the skilled jobbing engineers of that time – which no doubt contributed to Scotland’s growing reputation as fine engineers. And from Pardieu evolved the Scottish version of their name to Purdey (and Purdy, Purdie and Pardew etc).

In the 1730’s Purdey family history records that one James Purdey trekked south from Scotland to find work in the minory district of the City of London, the blacksmithing quarter. He not only succeeded in his quest, but married and raised a family. After children came grandchildren, and in 1798 Purdey’s 14 year old grandson, also baptised James, became apprenticed to Thomas Keck Hutchinson, his older brother in law, and a Master Gunmaker plying his trade in the London Borough of Southwark. Young James Purdey thus completed his apprenticeship in 1805 and went to work for Joseph Manton, London’s most famous maker of sporting guns. In 1810 and by this time head stocker, he left Manton’s employ for Number 10 Piccadilly, to work for the Rev Dr Alexander Forsyth, a Scot, famous for his guns as well as his research into the detonating properties of gunpowder - which led to the invention of the percussion cap. In 1814, at the age of 30, James Purdey achieved his long held ambition to establish his own gunmaking business, and he set up shop at 4 Princes Street, off Leicester Square, determined from the outset to build guns pistols and rifles only of the highest quality.

That is how James Purdey, descended from French Huguenots, came to establish his own business, why I am proud to look back at my French and Scottish ancestry over so many generations, and am grateful to the Scots for having given us a home in time of need. If it hadn’t been for their valuing and nurturing the blacksmithing skills of these immigrant French artisans, which led to the creation of one of the worlds best known names in gunmaking, the course of history for this particular branch of the Pardieus might have been very different.
