GEORGE GOLDSMITH EXCLUSIVE Properties & SportiNG ESTATES SCOTLAND’S SPORTING & PROPERTY SPECIALISTS 2011/12 HOUSES | CASTLES | SPORTING ESTATES photo: Glyn Satterley Welcome to the 2011/12 brochure! I am sitting on top of a hill near my home in East Lothian, near Edinburgh, looking out across the Lammermuir Hills and reflecting on what has been a fantastic 2010 sporting season in Scotland. The green shoots of spring are emerging and Scotland is gradually coming alive! It’s a great feeling having a spring, summer and autumn ahead of us and with so much out there to do and see. I’m getting excited about a trip to the Outer Hebrides in June to fish my way through the islands of Barra, South & North Uist, Harris and Lewis. Long evenings, great fishing, breathtaking scenery! Sporting Salmon catches have been at an all-time high on many of our Scottish rivers. The northern rivers including the Thurso, Alness, Helmsdale, Halladale have all experienced remarkable catches and many records broken. One angler had 12 fish to his rod in a day, 80 fish on a beat in a week, over 3000 fish caught on the Thurso in 2010, the best ever for 100 years! The grouse shooting season across northern England and Scotland has also been very positive with some of the best records since 1992. There is real hope and genuine excitement that recent grouse management innovations are paying dividends and the peaks and troughs are a thing of the past. Despite the hard winter many estates are reporting very encouraging spring counts and a low worm burden so let us hope for a good spring. These healthy reports have resulted in a strong demand to head north once again, to enjoy some great sport in 2011. Family holidays Scotland is still a top destination for a family holiday with so much to do and see. Hills, mountains, rivers, lochs and sea. Breathtaking scenery, some of the finest golf courses in the world, deserted sandy beaches and as you know we have the best portfolio of country houses, castles and sporting lodges to offer you. Short breaks Don’t forget we can recommend some fantastic locations for short breaks or long weekends, catering for large or small parties. We look forward to hearing from you and arranging your memorable holiday in 2011! Call us today on 0131 476 6500. Misunderstanding occurs at many levels. There is often In our superficial era of sound-bite and celebrity it has significant misunderstanding (or perhaps more accurately never been more important to combat misunderstanding – a lack of understanding) amongst the general public and and for landowners to be properly represented. The latest politicians about what Scottish landowners do in terms of Scottish Wildlife Estates Initiative recently launched by supporting employment and local infrastructure, pursuing SRPBA is a prime of example of exactly this in action. conservation and environmental initiatives and working It is a bold move to help demonstrate the role Scottish towards an appropriate balance in wildlife management sporting estates play in delivering a wide range of benefits and biodiversity. to Scotland. I would urge you to support the organisation and this latest initiative www.srpba.com – there can be This in turn has led to considerable legislation and no better prevention than this. numerous initiatives from government and narrowly focused interest groups which are often claimed to be, and in many cases with some justification, misconceived. The problem is compounded by frequent misunderstanding of the regulations themselves fuelled by sensationalist press comment. As lawyers acting for both existing and prospective landowner and managers it is often the case that we find ourselves advising those whose understanding may be either too bleak or too rosy. By keeping up to date with developments we are in a position to help our clients, but our role is necessarily limited.
