Representing the sport of Olympic Sprint Canoe Kayak racing, the main function of OCSRA is to implement, manage and monitor programs and activities that are provincial in scope. The primary responsibility of the OCSRA is athlete development. A summary of OCSRA core programs follows: Identify talented athletes by trials and merit, and name an Ontario Team. Monitor the progress of the Ontario Team athletes and assist in their development with the help of Club coaches and a paid Provincial Coach, with the objective of placing Ontario athletes on the National Team, or developing athletes to compete for Canada at international competitions. Implement an Elite Athlete Assistance program to aid Ontario Team athletes (where funding is available). Organize and conduct an on-water Spring Training camp, winter/summer training camps, and other initiatives that promote the development of high performance athletes in Ontario. Organize and conduct Ontario Team Trials, Ontario Championships, Trillium and a Long Distance championship. Select and prepare Ontario's entry to the Canada Summer Games. Assist with organizing and running the canoe events at Ontario Summer Games. Assist Divisions/Clubs with High Performance Centre expenses where funding permits. Promote and subsidize programs to improve the sport in Ontario, including - Coaching development - Officials development - Volunteers development - Club development and increased participation - Sport Equity - Water Safety Promote the hosting of National and International events in Ontario. For more information on any of the programs and initiatives available to members of the Affiliation in any current year please contact the Provincial Coach or the Chairperson OCSRA. 2013 Ontario Team Handbook / page 2 ONTARIO ATHLETE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM It should be clearly understood that the philosophy of the Ontario Athlete Assistance Program is to assist developing athletes to the National Team level and to assist developing athletes to compete for Canada at international competitions. Upward progression by an athlete towards the national team and international podium performances is the objective for both the athlete and the program. In order to receive Ontario Team Athlete Assistance an athlete must: After being nominated to the team, submit a copy of the CKC Athlete Development Tool found in Appendix3; and, Maintain a discipline ranking within the group of athletes eligible for carding nomination; and, Demonstrate progress toward achieving the National Team standard and international standards listed in Appendix1at any of the designated Ontario Team carding regattas, or, Demonstrate improvement in national rank amongst those athletes in your discipline competing for National Team status; and, Submit a copy of the OCSRA Athlete Agreement found in Appendix 4 that shows the athlete will comply with the training/competition requirements of the Ontario Athlete Assistance Program, the Ontario High Performance Sports Initiative Program (OHPSI) if applicable. This includes full attendance at designated training camps, and participation in training activities and testing specified within a monthly program agreed with the Provincial coach. A performance review of each application will occur in October of each year. Where an athlete has not met targets in areas of performance, technique, and fitness as compared to CKC’s Gold Medal Profile (as assessed at training camps and testing) carding may be denied or discontinued. The following Selection Criteria will be used to nominate athletes to the Ontario Team. All nominations must be approved by the OCSRA Board and the CKC Athlete Development Tool must be completed before any nomination is finalized. 1. Selection for Team status will be based on the achievement of carding points, and bonus points at designated Ontario Team carding events which can be found in Table 2 on page 8. Carding points are awarded on the basis of position of finish from the regattas listed in Table 2 on page 8. Bonus points are awarded based

  • Complements to the Base Technique in Sprint Kayak; Methods of Evaluation
1 2 Complements to the Base Technique in Sprint Kayak; Methods of Evaluation Summary The following is a study on the methods of evaluation of complementary elements of Base Technique. These are: 1. Meta-Technique – which represents the athlete’s primary objective and is closely related to the hydrodynamic characteristics and the statistical necessities of energy exchange; and 2. Micro-Technique – which relates to the specifics of force application with a view to achieving the desired objectives, using Base Technique as required. We will also be examining the physical principles relating to the various evaluations, as well as providing the formulae and showing the methods of video-analysis employed. With regards to the athletes’ Meta- and Micro-Techniques, we shall evaluate some of the elements identified in the video clips. An athlete with flawless technique will produce physical phenomena that leave predictable and consistent traces, which in turn represent the optimal point of reference. It is not a coincidence that these traces and phenomena correspond to the principles of propulsion of naval hydrodynamics. On the other hand, an athlete whose technique is imperfect will produce physical phenomena that leave chaotic traces, which are never similar to those we expect to see in optimal cases. We will also devote our attention to analysing races using GPS data for speed and frequency provided by the ICF (International Canoe Federation) and by the FISA (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron) for international races. It is possible to obtain a great quantity of information using said data: we can analyse information relating to quality, as well as indicating the fundamental ‘methods’ or ‘modes’.

  • I the Biomechanics of Dragon Boat Paddling by Joseph Alexander Gomory a Thesis Submitted in Fulfilment of the Requirements for T
The Biomechanics of Dragon Boat Paddling By Joseph Alexander Gomory A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Applied Science Principal Supervisor: Dr Kevin Ball Associate Supervisor: Dr Simon Taylor College of Sport & Exercise Science Institute for Health and Sport Victoria University 2018 i Abstract In dragon boat racing, boat speed is generated by paddle propulsion produced by human movement. However at the fundamental level it is the interaction of the paddle with water that produces the forces generating boat speed. Literature on the biomechanics of paddle propulsion is sparse and is concerned predominantly with human movement and not with the fundamentals of paddling. This thesis examines the biomechanics of dragon boat paddling from the perspective of the paddle. Kinetic and kinematic paddle data were collected sequentially for each test participant from two dragon boat crews via 30 s maximum effort paddling tests. A custom built strain-gauged paddle sampled the paddling forces at 200 Hz whilst a stationary video camera (Sony HDR-HC7) recorded a single representative racing paced paddling stroke at 200 Hz. A light flash recorded by the video camera and its trigger signal recorded by the force data collection system ensured synchronisation. Excel spreadsheets converted the data into kinetic and kinematic paddle parameters for each study. Study one operationalised a qualitative coaching model for teaching paddlers a good dragon boat paddling stroke and produced strong support for the coaching model via a statistical comparison of more skilled paddlers with paddlers less skilled. More skilled paddlers produced significant superior results for paddle reach at water contact, rate of force development on water entry, maximum paddle force, drive impulse and drive impulse rate, force rate reduction at paddle exit and paddle impulse during recovery.
