Windellama Garden Club Incorporated News February 2019 Rainfall All up for February we received 75.5mm of rain at our place. Most of it in in 1 – 3mm at a time.

March 2019 Rainfall Early rainfall in March at our place was in falls of 2 – 3mm. However, we received a good drop on Sunday night the 17th of 23mm. Total so far for March is 41mm.

Country Fair 2019 This year the Country Fair is being held in conjunction with a Community Auction. The task list I prepared last time in the Windellama News has to be modified due the school needing the hall on Thursday 4th April.

The new Country Fair Task List is outlined below.

Country Fair Task Schedule Thursday 4th April – 2pm to 5pm approximately – set up Friday 5th April – 1.30pm to 6pm – benching of entries Saturday 6th April - 8am to 9.30am – benching of entries and general tasks. - 9.30am to 12noon – Stewarding and general tasks. - 3pm to 4pm – packing up. Ring Harry on 48447061 to donate your time or just turn up. Our last club meeting was held at Johnno's Shop. The new owners are friendly and make great burgers with the lot. Coffee is good too. In our garden we are still picking a few tomatoes each day and every now and then the odd zucchini. The pumpkins, cucumber and watermelons did no good, probably due to lack of water and some very hot days. Our next job in the veggie garden is to remove the abundant weeds ready for the winter vegetables. Before we plant we test the soil PH, add Lime or Cow Manure and let it settle/rest before planting. We use one litre clear plastic cordial bottles with the bottom cut off to plant our cabbage, kale and broccoli seeds under. Two seeds or more are planted and if both grow only then we transplant. The bottles act as a miniature hot house and at the same time keep the snails and most bugs away. Harry Simm Secretary Windellama Garden Club Inc.

Craft @ Windellama Hall We meet from the second Tuesday of the month 1—4 pm. For more information please call Irene Turner on 48445 214.

Windellama SES First Aid & CFR So far in March we have had the usual number of callouts for the CFR side of our activities. Three of our members responded to a call for help from our Goulburn Unit due to the severe storm that went through Goulburn just recently. Litter in guttering caused some problems, so please keep that in mind. Water for the SES/ Fire for the RFS. Four of our members who have offered to be trained as CFR members, (Ambulance Trained), this will help us greatly. They are younger people too which gives us oldies a bit of help. We are seeking help from the people of Windellama, in particular, to help in the organization of our Country Fair and Auction day on the 6th of April. Anyone wishing to get more information could contact Graham Kinder on 0429892154 or Harry Simm on (02)48447061. This a combined Community Activity helping to support the Country Fair run by the Windellama Garden Club Inc. The ground around here is seeing a welcome break from the baking it has had over recent months. Kevin Muffet Deputy Unit Commander Windellama SES/CFR Busy Bee For the first working bee of the year– tree planting and fencing – we will be returning to the CHAIN OF PONDS ON SATURDAY THE 13 APRIL. We’ll meet at 9.30 am for a cuppa and morning tea and lunch will be provided. Access to the Chain of Ponds is located on Sandy Point Road, just before WINDELLAMA it meets Oallen Ford Road. As ever, anyone/everyone is welcome to join us and children are most welcome: there is quite a relaxed atmosphere at our meetings/busy bees and a lot of fun – as well as learning more about our local situation– such as soils, weeds, which plants to grow where – just let us know if you would like to come (phone Tony or Sandra, 0418 412 460) so we are sure to have enough tucker to go around. The trees we are planting this time are to replace some that were lost a year ago in the flooding of the area, plus some extra ones. We’ll be using large pink tree guards which are promoted for providing the right environment for young trees. We have used them previously and found that they promote growth and protect the younger trees till they are tall enough to pop their heads above the guard – and beyond. Wild Windellama Recently I have been re-reading some of Carina Clarke’s articles fromWild Windellama which were printed in Windellama news over a number of years. These articles, accompanied by Carina’s beautiful, accurate black and white drawings of the plants, birds and animals of Windellama, are wonderful as well as informative. Each of the two volumes has an index so it’s easy to locate a particular local flower, shrub or bird and read something about it. We have plenty of copies of the two-volume set available, as we have just had it reprinted. Future activities Our new President has set out a schedule for the year’s activities. If you have any enquiries please ring Henry on 02 4844 5030 or 0408 601 016. We would love to see you at the WORKING BEE ON THE 13 APRIL – even if you just come and say hello! Windellama Historical Society from Tom Bryant WINDELLAMA MARBLE QUARRY Black marble had evidentially been discovered at Windellama around 1882 as a quarry reserve was set aside on 6 November 1882. It was located on a portion of land then called Portion 141, Parish Yarralaw. The land in question was later given Portion number 278.

MARBLE QUARRY AT WINDELLAMA (Goulburn Evening Penny Post of 15 February 1890) Mr Jagueal, a Sydney gentleman, is at present engaged in opening up a quarry of black marble on Mr Croker's land at Windellama. A saw-mill with the necessary apparatus has been placed on the ground, and some large blocks of a couple of tons weight have already been taken out. The marble is said to be equal to the famous Kilkenny marble. If the enterprise is attended with success we may expect that important buildings which may be erected in Goulburn in the future may be embellished with the noble material.

After Federation of the states in 1901, several sites, including Goulburn were being investigated as a possible site for the National Capital. An enquiry was held in Goulburn on 8 May 1900 into what the area could offer for a National Capital. Among those giving evidence were Mr Conolly-flour miller, EC Manfred-architect, WJ Bartlett-brewer and Mr James Turner-monumental mason who talked of the location of stone for building and mentions the marble at Windellama. The quarry was located at the junction of the Buburba and Windellama creeks not far from Buburba homestead. There is mention that Windellama marble was used in the large hall at the university in Sydney. In 1900 at a meeting in Windellama regarding the proposed to Braidwood railway line, Mr Gegg said the railway would benefit the area with its rich deposits of minerals, limestone and marble. The rail was still being talked about in 1908 and marble was again mentioned as something that could be sent away by rail. Tarago & District Mens Shed News Mob +61 (0) 409 041 783 Now Tarago has an officially opened Men’s Shed, some may think the huff and puff is all over, ie it’s back to normal or business as usual. Well not quite! The men have been busy preparing the shed for use and planning the next stages. Much of the recreation room layout and equipment was simply “placed” for the opening rather than “installed”. There is still lots to do to make the shed fully operational. It’s a growing concern. Members meet on Wednesday and Saturday from 10AM to about 2PM and often start the day with tea/coffee, a little luxury (a Tim Tam or two) and a chat before undertaking a task of their interest. This may include: more coffee, talking, reading newspapers or a book, catering for the monthly lunch, woodwork, welding, shed set up, installing equipment or planning for the next tour around our country. Guests and “drop ins” always welcome. Men’s Shed “Purpose”. A frequent question is:“ What does the Men’s Shed do” or “What happens at Men’s Shed?”. A common mis-conception is we only do “woodworking”. While we do have wood lathes, drop and cross cut power saws and associate tools, there is also a wide range of other equipment and tools available and the list is growing. The shed is more and more reflecting the wishes of our members. With the wide experience and interest of members, we have the ability to undertake many projects which may be hands on or more academic. Members experience includes: farming, bee keeping, building, concreting, boiler making, engineering, telecoms, air force, navy and army organisational experiences and capabilities. For example, members experience and capability allowed the shed to move quickly from turning the first sod to shed opening, in only a matter of weeks. Another mis-conception is “I’m not a hands on person”. This may be true but many shedders are also eager to learn new skills and meet new people. The availability of a comfortable space where men can meet, relax and discuss with no preconception that a “work of art” will result is refreshing. You may need help with that mower that won’t start or would like to undertake a bit of welding and don’t have the experience. Then there are others you can turn to and they are eager to assist. An example is Reg who can put on “How to use tools and machinery instruction sessions”. Another FAQ is about others using the shed. The facilities of the Shed are available to members of the District community by prior arrangement with the Committee. Please contact the Secretary, Owen Manley on 0409 041 783 or [email protected] The shed also has a mascot. Tassie Beileiter regularly visits the shed with his master, Howard. Safety. There is a defibrillator at the Shed but of course it is available only at opening days/times: Wed/Sat. 10AM-2PM. Most open days, Noel Sylvester is usually in attendance. Noel is a designated first responder (Continued on page 14)

Page 13 www.windellama.com.au Windellama News - April 2019

(Continued from page 13) in the district. Several of us are also qualified in Basic First Aid and use of the “DeFib”. Donations. Periphery Internet, the boys from Heron Resources and materials. The Men’s Shed would like to thank Heron Resources Woodlawn operations for their $1000 donation, Martin Welsby of Periphery Internet for supporting the Men’s Shed by the donation and installation of the wifi system in the shed. Also a huge thanks to the boys from Heron Resources for winning the ”TugOWar” at the Tarago Show and then donating the $800 proceeds to the Shed. There have also been a number of other donations of tools and similar to the shed and these are thankfully acknowledged. WE ASK PEOPLE TO HUNT OUT THAT SPARE DOUBLE WINDOW THAT’S COLLECTING DUST IN THE SHED AND DONATE IT SO WE CAN PUT IT ON OUR NORTH WALL TO LET THE SUN SHINE IN ON WINTER DAYS! We are also looking for building materials such as yellow tongue flooring or plywood sheeting or tongue & groove floor boards to form the mezzanine floor, a wood heater, R1.5 or R2.5 fibreglass or similar wall insulation and up to 64m2 carpet tiles for completion of the recreation room. Tarago Show 2019

Well, that’s the 61st show run and won and what a great day it turned out to be. The only problems we had were little ones and readily solved. I would like to thank the Show Committee and the many volunteers who again offered their valuable time to ensure that we had a terrific Show. Thanks to our major sponsors Veolia Environmental Services, owners and operators of the Woodlawn Bioreactor; INFIGEN Energy, owners of Capital Wind Farm; Heron Resources Ltd owners of the Woodlawn mine, not to forget the many locals who provided prizes for the pavilion and other events including the Tarago Sporting Association for providing ribbons for the horse events. Because of these generous sponsors no entertainment cost more than a gold coin donation if you could afford it otherwise it was free. Goulburn Mulwaree Council also deserves our thanks for the support they provide with rubbish collection and of course our Mayor, Bob Kirk, who opened the Show and presented some of the Pavilion prizes. Dog Show participation was good with about 340 entries, well done Jean and John Hockey. The horse competitions this year attracted over 400 entries. A great effort again by our Chief Steward Lisa Wilson. The ever-popular Cow Pat Lotto first prize of $1000 was won by our own Jenny Hajek. The Grand Champion fleece was this year won by Sarah Shiels The Tug of War competition for the Hookey Memorial Trophy was won by first timers Heron Resources who donated their prize money to the Tarago Men’s Shed. I must also give the CWA a special mention. The Pavilion exhibits were a great success with a good range of entries in most categories. The Chief Steward Jo Cormie and her fellow stewards and judges did a great job and the pavilion looked terrific. Congratulations to our most successful pavilion exhibitor, Vicki McMahon and the Most Successful Junior Pavilion Exhibitor, Phoebe Matthews. Heather and Cid Riley again won the Robert Allan Memorial trophy as the most successful exhibitor in the Vege Section. This year we also had a Best in Show prize of $100 which was won by Simeon Hindle for a magnificent Leggo model. Well done Simeon. We had an attendance of about 800 adults and 300 to 350 kids. This will be my last Show as a committee member after 14 years and I must say that I have had many more ups than downs but my time has come! Thank you all, particularly the Show committee and volunteers, for your help and support over the years. Keith Hunter President 48494256 Email: [email protected]

Flue & Chimney Fires It's almost time to light the home wood heaters again, but before you light up, please consider cleaning your flue or chimney. Creosote can build up inside your flue/chimney and potentially ignite, creating a run-away fire with the Dial potential to burn through the flue and become a 000 house fire. In the event of a flue or chimney fire call 000 immediately and then if you can, close off any vents to limit (or stop) the entry of oxygen to the fire box. A dry chemical extinguisher blasted into the fire box may help extinguish the fire but to open the fire box will also provide a strong source of oxygen so care must be taken to assess the risk. If you are like me and load up the heater with paper waste over summer, then before you light up for the first time, its best to unload it then introduce that fuel slowly. Again, in the event of any flue or chimney fire call 000 immediately. Come and visit us at the Country Fair and Community Auction 6th April. Windellama Rural Fire Brigade members will proudly be joining with Volunteers from many organisations in the area, to support the Country Fair and Community Auction on the 6th of April. We will have an information stall available for you to ask us questions and get resources about how to make your home and property more fire resilient. You can also come along and enquire about joining the Brigade. We look forward to seeing you there!

Southern Tablelands Athletics Club (STAC) We have so much to tell you this month! Firstly we received our hurdles and we welcomed Luke Tolley, Manager of Coles Goulburn to come and visit us to see what we had bought with the $5000 grant that we received from coles Australia Little Athletics program. We presented Luke with a framed certificate of appreciation and a yummy steak sandwich with all the trimmings. He was delighted with the equipment and watched our athletes train over the hurdles (we couldn’t persuade him to test them out himself but he was happy to appear in the photo with our athletes. Thank you Coles Australia. We welcomed 2 more new athletes to our club, Linux Cole from Tarago and Ashton Stewart from Boro and this takes our numbers up to 24 which means we have grown by 10% from last year’s numbers. 6 of our athletes entered the People’s Choice ACT State Championships, Aydan Saad Under 17, Toby Roberts Under 12, Victoria O’Donnell Under 11, Lucy Henderson and Seth Saad Under 10 and Kayley Henderson Under 8. We are so proud of our athletes who made history by being the first ones to compete for our Club and we are especially proud that they ALL achieved personal best scores at the championships which is a huge effort under such competition pressure. Aydan also came home with a stack of Silver and Bronze medals in his events and there were several comments of “who are these athletes?” and “which club is this Southern Tablelands Athletics Club?” putting us well and truly on the little athletics map. A huge thank you to the fan club (parents) for supporting our athletes. Results from the Peoples Choice ACT State Championships 15th March – 17th March 2019 U8 Girls 100m sprint – Kayley Henderson 19.37 secs (Personal Best) U10 Girls 100m sprint – Lucy Henderson 18.89 secs (Personal Best) U10 Boys 70m sprint – Seth Saad 12.32 secs (Personal Best) U10 Boys Discus – Seth Saad 15.49m (Personal Best) U10 Boys Long Jump – Seth Saad 2.68m (Personal Best) U11 Girls 100m sprint – Victoria O’Donnell 17.69 secs (Personal Best) U11 Girls 200m sprint – Victoria O’Donnell 39.87 secs (Personal Best) U11 Girls Shot Put – Victoria O’Donnell 5.60m (Personal Best) U12 Boys Long Jump – Toby Roberts 3.70m (Personal Best) U17 Boys 100m Final – Aydan Saad 12.50 secs Bronze Medal (Personal Best) U17 Boys 200m Final – Aydan Saad 25.59 secs Silver Medal (Personal Best) U17 Boys Long Jump – Aydan Saad 5.32m Bronze Medal (Personal Best) U17 Boys Triple Jump – Aydan Saad 10.59m Bronze Medal (Personal Best) U17 Boys High Jump – Aydan Saad 1.50m Silver Medal (Personal Best) U17 Boys Discus – Aydan Saad 25.22m Bronze Medal (Personal Best) U17 Boys Javelin – Aydan Saad 32.68 Silver Medal From April we enter the off season for Little Athletics where the events are mainly cross country running so please keep an eye on our Facebook page and your email inboxes as events will be posted and emailed to you. GREATER GLIDER UPDATE By Kay Muddiman – Media Officer You may remember that last month, included in my article on possums that had come into care recently, I wrote about a tiny orphaned female Greater Glider joey. Well, I thought I would update you on her progress. She has done wonderfully well under Kristen’s great care – putting on lots of weight and doing all the right ‘possum’ things. Greater Gliders are very fussy eaters, so collecting enough of the right leaf for her has been a major effort. As she has to be released in the same place that she came from, she must get used to eating leaf from that area prior to release. The guy who found her brings leaf from his property when he can, which is a great help. She's now almost ready for release, but first will be transferring to a very large aviary where she can spend some The Greater Glider well on her way to time practicing gliding and building up her muscle strength. being ready for release.(Photo courtesy This is vital to ensure she is in a strong enough condition to Kristen Lowe) survive once she’s back in the wild. All in all, the future is looking positive for this gorgeous girl! Should you need advice or help with injured or distressed wildlife, please ring the WIRES Rescue Number 1300 094737. Your call will be logged and directed to the appropriate branch electronically when, as always, our volunteers will be only too happy to assist. Until next time, take care all, Kay.

(Continued from page 23) lodged a grant application with the Veolia Mulwaree Trust for High Jump mats and a trolley and we would like to thank the Tarago Sporting Association (TSAI) who have granted us $500 towards the project. We received $300 which is our first donation from the Tarago Bingo Ladies which we put immediately towards a banner that we took to display proudly at the ACT State Championships – thank you very much ladies for your generous support. Also a huge thank you to the Elliott family of Bungendore for donating to us a set of High Jump stands and a flexible bar for our younger athletes. The generosity of the whole community is outstanding in the support of our Little Athletics Club. The club has been invited to participate in the Windellama Spring Fair and Auction on Saturday 6th April 2019 as a fund raising event for our club and we need volunteers to help in the kitchen and donations of cakes and slices to sell. Please contact myself on the details below or our President Ian O’Donnell on 0477 779 076 if you can help as this is a great opportunity to raise funds that we need to obtain the equipment that we still need for our athletes and club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Windellama Progress Association for including us in the event and along with the TSAI for the continued support they show our club allowing us to use their grounds and facilities for our weekly meets.

April in Your Garden By Irene Turner

VEGETABLES; Plant Broad beans now, which prefer a cool climate and are ready to pick early spring., when vegetables are scare. Give the soil a good liming and also add some complete fertilizer. They don`t like a high nitrogen fertilizer as this promotes leaves at the expense of flowers. Plant peas, cabbages, and onions. Peas like a soil which has had light dressing of lime and complete fertilizer. FLOWERS; Seedling available now; Alyssum, Canterbury bells, carnations, cornflower, delphinium, dianthus, hollyhock, russel lupins, pansy, viola, primula, snapdragon, stock and wallflower. Seeds of sweet peas can now be sown. Treat the soil same as eating peas. It is a good time to see what deciduous trees and shrubs are showing their autumn colours. Must deciduous plants can be planted in our garden, they often need the cooler nights in April to change the colour of the leaves before they drop them , for winter dormancy. Replace sick lavender now, Lavender and other grey-leafed plants can suffer badly in humid periods, and often develop unsighly dead patches that gradually spread through the plant. Sometimes the only option is to throw the plant away and start again. Grow lavender in an open, sunny position with plenty of air moment. Make sure the soil is well drained. Give lavender an all-over trim two or three times a year, avoiding cutting back into any woody or leafless section. Lavender loves a neutral PH , so in areas with acidic soil, sprinkle a coating of dolomite around the base, and surrounding soil. You can plant garlic bulbs now. Garlic needs plenty of sunshine and a well-drained soil rich in organic matter, as wet soils lead to rot and failed crops. Sandy soil are good, add well-rotted compost, and mix in some blood and bone, a little potash and some rock mineral to provide trace elements. Check the pH, and if it`s below 6, add some agricultural lime. March to May is the best time to plant garlic in most areas, just as temperatures start to cool. When tomato finished don`t forget to save the seeds for next year crop. Watch for fruit flies in apples, pears and leave the fruit in aplastic bags in the sun to kill all the larvae, then bin them.

Willow Glen Gardeners http://www.whispersfromwillowglen.blogspot.com This month the Willow Glen gardeners met at my place in Boro. There was a great roll up with many members braving the nearly 10 kilometres of the not great gravel road to view my garden. I inherited the garden as one that had to withstand long periods of neglect due to the annual caravanning trips away from our cold winters. With only tank water available it also had to depend on sparse rainfall as well as harsh frosts and some very hot summers. I was continually surprised to return after a sojourn of from 2 to 6 months away that most plants were still alive and in fact getting ready for a burst of spring flowers! That common and much maligned diosma is a hero while prostrate variegated pittosporum, New Zealand flax, lavender and salvia do very well with absolutely no care what so ever! Although if cut back at the wrong time, the diosma can burn from a bad frost so I try to let them get a bit ‘hairy’ to give them some protection over winter. Bearded iris are scattered everywhere for a lovely and rather showy spring show and aren’t eaten by the wildlife either. I’m trying to grow agapanthus along pathways outside the protection of the house yard but they were totally eaten down to the roots by the hungry wallabies last year. My roses that usually do very well are just now recovering from almost entire annihilation by the wildlife with a good covering of leaves and some buds developing. Osteospermum thrive and self seed in my stony clay soil. The seedlings I’ve spread throughout the garden beds are currently giving a lovely colourful show on sunny days. I’ve discovered that most gardens in this area have to be built up above the clay soils that simply won’t break down, but with some perseverance and a yearly dose of Seasol and compost, plants can and do survive. While my garden is rather limited to various contained garden areas surrounded by white pebbles instead of lawn and balls of diosma all around the house, garden club members took the opportunity to enjoy some of my tracks through the gullies and wild bushland. I enjoy the presence of various types of wildlife about the place but the antics of the birds vying for their turn in the bird bath each morning is most entertaining. As usual generous members brought along plants, cuttings and seedlings to share. Of course the lack of rain was to blame for some less than happy gardeners although fruit and some veggie crops were plentiful. The next meeting will be held on 2nd April at the Mount Annan gardens near Sydney. For details call Judy on 0438605821 or 0248445350. New members are welcome to join us.
