Jones: Goodnight Saigon GOODNIGHT SAIGON: BILLY JOEL’S MUSICAL EPITAPH TO THE VIETNAM WAR Morgan Jones* Billy Joel adopted new personae and took on new roles in several songs on both 1982’s The Nylon Curtain1 and his penultimate studio album to date, 1989’s Storm Front.2 In what some have seen as an attempt to reach a more adult audience, to “move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect,”3 Joel put on new hats (literally, at times: his fedora-wearing balladeer appears prominently in the video for “Allentown”) for “Allentown” and “The Downeaster ‘Alexa’,” “Pressure” and “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Goodnight Saigon” and “Leningrad.”4 Each of these pairs of songs saw Joel endeavoring to make statements about issues that were bigger than he and his own life, which was in stark contrast to his sources of inspiration for his earlier, more self-centered albums.

We the Kings Somewhere Somehow More information at www.ozonemm.com/wethekings “It was time for a creative change.” So says We the Kings frontman Travis Clark, explaining his band’s new album, Somewhere Somehow — a commercial and artistic triumph that marks, yes, a real creative change. It’s not like the band had to amend their ways. Since forming in high school in Bradenton, FL, We the Kings have rung up a string of top 10 rock albums (2007’s We the Kings, 2009’s Smile Kid and 2011’s Sunshine State of Mind) and Gold/platinum singles (“Check Yes Juliet”, “Say You Like Me”). Along the way, they toured the world several times over (including five stints on the Warped Tour) and earned an extraordinarily dedicated fanbase. But the band — Clark, Hunter Thomsen, Danny Duncan and (joining in 2011) Coley O’Toole and Charles Trippy — decided to approach their fourth album differently. They went completely DIY. “We wanted to make this record completely fan-based,” explains Clark. Which meant leaving their longtime record label. And raising the recording budget on their own. To this end, the band turned to the crowdfunding site Indiegogo, hoping to reach a modest budget goal within a month. Thanks to those diehard fans, they got there. In one day. “The Indiegogo campaign went way beyond what we imagined,” happily admits Clark. And thanks to the fans’ generous support, the group was able to fund a vinyl release, a physical CD and even offer up some creative rewards, including fan participation in the recording.

Hyniea (Niea) Gardner A Thesis in the Field of Anthropology and Archaeology for the Degree of Master of Liberal Arts in Extension Studies Harvard University May 2019 © May 2019 Hyniea (Niea) Gardner Abstract In 2016 the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) reported that the Korean music industry saw an overseas revenue of ₩5.3 trillion ($4.7 billion) in concert tickets, streaming music, compact discs (CDs), and related services and merchandise such as fan meetings and purchases of music artist apparel and accessories (Kim 2017 and Erudite Risk Business Intelligence 2017). Korean popular music (K-Pop) is a billion-dollar industry. Known for its energetic beats, synchronized choreography, and a sound that can be an amalgamation of electronica, blues, hip-hop, rock, and R&B all mixed together to create something that fans argue is “uniquely K-Pop.” However, further examination reveals that producers and songwriters – both Korean and the American and European specialists contracted by agencies – tend to base the foundation of the K-Pop sound in hip-hop and R&B, which has strong ties to African-American musical traditions.
