The biogeographical composition of the fauna is discussed. A key to the subfamilies and tribes of West Indian anthicids is provided. RESUMEN Existen ocho especies en tres subfamilias de Anthicidae en las Islas Vírgenes: Neoeurygenius portoricencis Abdullah (Eurygeniinae); Anthicus antilleorum Werner, A. crinitus LaFerté-Sénectère A. floralis (Linnaeus), A. tobias Marseul, Vacusus vici- nus (LaFerté-Sénectère), Sapintus teapensis (Champion), y Acanthinus trifasciatus (Fabricius) (Anthicinae). Además de las claves para la identificación de estas especies, cada una es diagnósticada e ilustrada. Se incluye la distribución de las especies en las Islas Vírgenes. Se discute la composición biogeográfica de la fauna. Se ofrece una clave para las subfamilias y tribus de los Anthicidae de las Antillas. The Virgin Islands are located at the eastern extreme of the Greater Antilles. The northern islands lie on the submerged Puerto Rican Bank, while St. Croix and its sat- ellite islands are separated by a deep trench from the northern islands (Heatwole & MacKenzie 1966). -

A species list, identification key, short diagnoses and illustrations of all taxa are given. Brief information on known ecological preferences of species is given. INTRODUCTION Anthicidae are a cosmopolitan family of small to medium-sized, fast-moving beetles of the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. Anthicidae are represented in the World fauna by approximately 100 genera, and about 3500 species (Chandler, 2010). Only a few species are known from the fossil record. The last revision of the British Anthicidae was published by F. D. Buck (1954) in the well-known series Handbooks for the Identification of British Insects. Since then, there have been numerous nomenclatural changes within Anthicidae, and some additional species (introduced) have been recorded from the UK, making Buck’s key out of date. During 2004 and 2005 a total of 3356 specimens of Anthicidae from the UK and Ireland were examined by the author, mainly from the collections of The Natural History Museum (London), Oxford University Museum of Natural History and National Museum of Ireland. Additional data for more than 2100 specimens were received from other British museums and private collections between 2005 and 2007. A new key and short diagnoses for the genera are presented, as well as data on habitats and general distribution of species. -

(Steropinae) and Sahulanthicus gen. nov. (Anthicinae: Anthicini) are described, diagnosed, and illustrated. Some critical morphological characters of these new groups and the subfamilies to which they belong are discussed. New combinations are made for the following 18 taxa: Australosteropes davidsonae (Armstrong, 1948) comb. nov. Arthropods serve this purpose because they are abundant and diverse in urban areas, and relatively easy to collect. Over seven years, in the Central Arizona Phoenix area, arthropod communities in three urban habitat categories were collected and compared to arthropods in natural desert using pitfall traps and non-parametric analyses. -
A REVIEW of the ANTHICIDAE of the MALTESE ISLANDS (CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN) (Coleoptera) Recent Studies Carried out on Collections
Fragmenta entomologica, Roma. 35 (2): 77-127 (2003) A REVIEW OF THE ANTHICIDAE OF THE MALTESE ISLANDS (CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN) (Coleoptera) GIANLUCA NARDI (*) and DAVID MIFSUD (**) INTRODUCTION Recent studies carried out on collections of Anthicidae from the Maltese Islands have resulted in new data, which is included in the present work. This study is mostly based on material collected between 1990 and 2003 (ca. 700 specimens) but also on collections (ca. 200 specimens) made at the beginning of last century. The latter collections formed the basis of the Anthicidae list published by Malcom Cameron and Alfredo Caruana Gatto in 1907 on Maltese beetles. HISTORICAL REVIEW The following review is provided due to the fact that previous authors have omitted some works (Caruana Gatto 1893; Cameron 1903; Andres 1916; Krekich-Strassoldo 1919; Koch 1931; Hille 1984; Schembri 1990) that mentioned Anthicidae collected from the Maltese Islands. Only the works that cite with certainty Maltese material are hereunder included; works (e.g. Luigioni 1929) which most probably repeated earlier references are not included. The Maltese naturalist Alfredo Caruana Gatto (1893) in his work entitled "Common beetles of the Maltese Islands" published the first records of Anthicidae from the Maltese Islands. In this work, five species were mentioned. Abstract: Taxonomic studies of the beetles of the families Anthicidae and Pyrochroidae by early authors were often not accurate. In the current work, some nomenclatural problems are solved, namely 29 new combinations, 7 new synonymies, one replacement name, 23 new statuses for subspecific names, and 16 lectotype designations. A type species for the genus Anthicodes WOLLASTON is designated. Twelve unavailable names of Anthicidae are listed. Two species new to science, Tomoderus pseudotrimaculatus sp. nov. from Papua New Guinea and Derarimus erratus sp. nov. from Sumatra (both Anthicidae Tomoderinae) are described and illustrated. The Anthicidae and Ischaliidae (Coleoptera) of Atlantic Canada Christopher G

Majka ABSTRACT The present paper surveys the ant-like flower beetles (Coleoptera: Anthicidae) and false fire-colored beetles (Coleoptera: Ischaliidae) of Atlantic Canada. Seventeen new provincial records are reported including two species, Amblyderus granularis and Anthicus cervinus, which are newly recorded in the region. Fifteen species have now been recorded in Atlantic Canada, 13 of which have been found in New Brunswick, 14 in Nova Scotia, seven in Prince Edward Island, and three on insular Newfoundland. Distribution maps, keys to the identification of species, and colour habitus photographs are provided. Ecologically, the species fall into three categories: anthropophilic species (Omonadus floralisand Omonadus formicarius); saproxylic species (Ischalia costata); and beetles associated with beach drift and other sandy environments (all other species). The comparative dearth of historical collecting in such habitats suggests the distribution and abundance of many Atlantic Canadian species may be poorly documented, and the possibility exists that additional, undocumented species may be present. RÉSUMÉ Cet article recense les Anthicidés (Coleoptera: Anthicidae) et les Ischaliidés (Coleoptera: Ischaliidae) du Canada Atlantique. Dix-sept additions à la faune provinciale sont rapportées, incluant Amblyderus granularis et Anthicus cervinus, deux espèces décrites pour la première fois dans la région. Quinze espèces ont maintenant été enregistrées au Canada Atlantique, dont 13 ont été trouvées au Nouveau Brunswick, 14 en Nouvelle-Écosse, sept à l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard et trois sur l’île de Terre-Neuve. Des cartes de distribution, des clés d’identification des espèces et des photographies couleurs de l’habitus sont fournies. -

The genus Anthelephila Hope, 1833 and its type species, Anthelephila cyanea Hope, 1833, are redescribed. Based on examination of the type material, the following new synonymy is proposed,Anthelephila Hope, 1833 (= Formicoma Motschoulsky, 1845 syn. n.) and A. cyanea Hope, 1833 (= Notoxus caeruleus Thunberg, 1787 syn. n.). Five genus-group names are regarded as unjustified emendations and are placed as synonyms:Anthelephila Hope, 1833 (=Anthelephilus LaFerté-Sénectére, 1849;Formico- soma Motschoulsky, 1845; Myrmecosoma Mannerheim, 1846;Formicomus LaFerté-Sénectére, 1849; Orthauchen Krekich- Strassoldo, 1925 syn. n.). Naturforsch. 47c, 290-299 (1992); received September 13, 1991/January 12, 1992 Cantharidin, Elytral Notches, Sexual Selection, Anthicidae, Coleoptera Within the beetle family Anthicidae or ant-like flower beetles the canthariphilous species Notoxus monoceros shows a pair of notch-like structures on the apices of male elytra. A reser voir-like swelling at the apex of each elytron contains a bilobed gland. Its glandular tubules run into the sclerotized notch. Gaschromatographic investigations of elytral notches and the testes of cantharidin-fed and unfed male Notoxus monoceros revealed huge quantities of can tharidin stored in these organs in fed specimens. Other body parts, such as legs, elytral parts or flight muscles, had low cantharidin-titres, both in cantharidin-fed and unfed beetles. The can- tharidin-titres of unfed individuals were very low compared with cantharidin-fed specimens, although cantharidin was present, mostly in notches. During sexual display the females bite several times into these notches and easily copulate, if the males had access to offered canthari din crystals. Thus, the elytral notches of male Notoxus monoceros seem to function as „test- organs“ for females which are able to select males with high cantharidin loads prior to copula tion. Even small quantities of cantharidin stored in notches of field caught specimens seem of advantage for males in competing for a female partner. Introduction fed male specimens were accepted by females for copulation. -
