Pronouns – singular, plural, possessive Pronouns - review Definition: • A pronoun takes the place of nouns or other pronouns. • Pronouns are the “stunt doubles” for nouns. • The word that is being replaced by a pronoun is the antecedent. Pronouns - review Identify the pronoun(s) in each of the following sentences. What is the antecedent for each pronoun? Examples: Jay enjoys hiking and camping. In fact, they are his two favorite past times. Singular & Plural Pronouns: Pronouns can be singular or plural. Pronouns - practice Read this passage, adapted from Cynthia Lord’s book, Rules. In the passage, find the requested pronoun form. Find: 4 singular pronouns, 2 plural pronouns, and 5 possessive pronouns. By the time I get to the living room, David’s already crouched in front of the fish tank, his smiling face reflected its glass. Out the window behind the aquarium, I see Mom in the yard talking to the mailman. And in the fish tank, one of my old Barbie dolls sits on the gravel, her arm raised in a friendly wave, as though she has spotted Ken across the living room and is inviting him to join her. The goldfish are used to David dropping strange beings into their tank. They always swim over to check out the newest arrivals and try to eat them. When that doesn’t work, they accept them, along with their usual plastic plants and little castle. Matthew would be quiet, but would look sad all the time, the way he looked whenever he was told they couldn’t keep the pigs anymore. Mark would gripe so much that he would make the family miserable. .
