THE ENLARGEMENT OF NATO: CULTURAL LESSONS AND PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVES — AN ESSAY IN GEOCULTURAL PHILOSOPHY —- by Balázs M. Mezei Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest Institute of Philosophy Budapest, 2000 {2} „If NATO did not exist today, would we have to invent it? The answer is, emphatically, yes.”1 1 Talbott 1999. {3} 1. Introduction Political philosophy has always been one of the main fields of general philosophy. There are two basic senses of political philosophy. The one is concerned with traditional politico- moral questions, such as the problem of ‘dirty hands’ or the more general relationship between ethics and political action. The other consists in applied philosophy, that is in a systematic employment of philosophical means in political, cultural and historical analysis with the explicit purpose of arriving at important lessons for the future.2 In what follows I offer a consideration of the second kind of political philosophy. My methodology is based on philosophical considerations of historical events and their structures, an approach sometimes termed ‘geopolitics’.3 Yet, the present paper would be geopolitical if and only if it remained on the level of a strategic analysis of geography, history and politics; but it goes beyond them, and in the final sections my paper becomes an analysis of the relationship between politics and culture as well as culture and general philosophy. Hence I term the category of my paper ‘geocultural philosophy’.4 In view of some past experiences and possible future developments I shall argue for the reconsideration of the framework in which the role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been considered.

SARASOTAI MAGYAR HIRMONDÓ A Kossuth Klub Hirei Szerkesztő: Kisvarsányi B. Éva 2003. A szoboravató ünnepségen részt vett Paul Wolfowitz amerikai honvédelmi miniszter helyettes. Beszédében kiemelte a magyar nép hősies küzdelmét a szovjet megszállók ellen 1956-ban. 1967-ben ösztöndíjjal a Dartmouth Egyetemen (Hanover, New Hampshire) tanult és a new yorki Lincoln Center- ben is bemutatkozott.
