Ugrešić, Hemon, and the Paradoxes of Literary Cosmopolitanism: Or How to “World” (Post-) Yugoslav Literature in the Age of Globalization

(082) 316.722(082) Stijn VERVAET* Utrecht University UGREŠIĆ, HEMON, AND THE PARADOXES OF LITERARY COSMOPOLITANISM: OR HOW TO “WORLD” (POST-) YUGOSLAV LITERATURE IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION Compared to Yugoslav culture, post-Yugoslav literature is perceived as utterly provincial by many critics. Using the example of work by Dubravka Ugrešić and Aleksandar Hemon, this paper explores how certain works of post-Yugoslav literature can nevertheless be read as “cosmopolitan literature.” I argue that both authors contribute to the “worlding” of (post-)Yugoslav literature(s) in a double sense. Dealing with issues of displacement and trauma, their work not only puts life stories from the former Yugoslavia on the map of the world but also deconstructs Western stereotypes about the region. Trough a web of intertextual references, their work includes the literary and cultural legacy of the former Yugoslavia in the imaginary space of world literature, thus reclaiming the common Yugoslav cultural space. Articles on the assassination and Prin- cip in two leading quality dailies (The Times and The New York Times) have par- ticularly been analysed as well as the views of leading historians and journalists who covered the subject including: R. G. D. Laffan, R. W. Seton-Watson, Win- ston Churchill, Sidney Fay, Bernadotte Schmitt, Rebecca West, A. J. P. Taylor, Vladimir Dedijer, Christopher Clark and Tim Butcher. In the West, the original general condemnation of the assassination and its main culprits was challenged when Rebecca West published her famous travelogue on Yugoslavia in 1941. An- other Brit, the remarkable historian A. J. P. Taylor, had a much more positive view on the Sarajevo conspirators and blamed Germany and Austria-Hungary for the outbreak of the Great War. -

IN THE NAME OF THE PEOPLE: YUGOSLAV CINEMA AND THE FALL OF THE YUGOSLAV DREAM ZORAN MARIC A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN CINEMA AND MEDIA STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO January 2017 © Zoran Maric, 2017 ii ABSTRACT This dissertation outlines the trajectory of Yugoslavia’s decline through an examination of select works of Yugoslav cinema from the late 1960s to the late 1980s which cogently commented on their sociopolitical context. It brings together various interpretive perspectives and utilizes film studies, cultural studies, political history, and postcolonial studies to discuss how the Yugoslav society and its political system are scrutinized through allegory, satire, and genre revisionism, for instance, and to elucidate what the films contribute to discourse on the origins of Yugoslavia’s violent breakup. Through a discussion of cinema, arguably the most politically subversive form of expression in the Yugoslav public sphere, this dissertation offers insight not only into why the country broke up but also, and perhaps more importantly, into what was lost when it broke up. Although it revolves around Yugoslavia’s failure, the dissertation validates the egalitarian, anti-imperialist Yugoslav idea and offers a take on the country’s demise that is free of Balkanist stereotypes and anti-communist paranoia common to most discussions of Yugoslavia’s end. It counters the view of Yugoslavia as a dictatorship which disintegrated when dormant ethnic antagonisms of its peoples were inexplicably reawakened, and ties the emergence of ethnic nationalism to Yugoslavia’s economic collapse of the 1970s and 1980s caused by the grasping reach of Western economic liberalism. -

Miletić Institute for Recent History of Serbia 1914 Revisited Commemoration of the WWI centenary in Serbia This paper deals with a wide range of social, political and cultural phenomena connected with the commemoration of the centenary of the beginning of the Great War in Serbia. It addresses a variety of representations of the role Serbia played in the war in both historiography and popular culture. The paper includes analysis of official state commemorations and media interviews by professional historians, politicians, and people from media and art. It attempts to provide a contextual background of the main arguments and the most influential interpretations of the war in contemporary Serbian society. The phenomena under study include quite a recent material and still ongoing public and scholarly debates which provide for the rather ambiguous character of this study. Namely, while aiming to explain the main narratives and arguments in a neutral manner, it cannot escape being polemical towards some of them. Although the academic genre dealing with politics of memory and culture of memory is nascent in Serbia, two important monographs by Olga Manojlović-Pintar1 and Danilo Šarenac2 1 Olga Manojlović-Pintar, Arheologija sećanja: spomenici i identiteti u Srbiji 1918-1989 [The Archeology of the Remembrance: Monuments and Identities in Serbia, 1918-1989].
