This focus day will incorporate an interactive expert panel discussion workshop session, moderated by Isto Matilla followed by a NATO CMRE Maritime Situational Awareness workshop led by Jonathan Locke. The focus day will be looking specifically at the key issues inhibiting domain awareness and efforts to increase maritime security including, service applications, communications and satellite data, system delivery and overall management of operations in a cross-governmental context. 10:00 AM - Maritime Security Panel Workshop Panel 1 – The requisite for effective data acquisition and integration to synchronise maritime operational response • How is data currently disseminated in existing systems and what are the capability gaps? • What service applications are needed to integrate data acquired from sources including radar, sensors and satellites? • Is it possible to effectively synergise information, capabilities and systems managed by both civilian and military authorities to provide a common information infrastructure? Panel 2 – Communications as a vital tool in protecting maritime security • How effective are current communications between nations and between different authorities such as coast guard and navies of the same country? • What is needed to build effective radio frequency networks to facilitate this communication? • Where is capacity lacking to discuss operations with different actors quickly and reliably? Panel 3 – Management of operations including training and education • How can we make inter-agency operations more streamlined in order to establish a unified response and exploit critical assets more effectively? • Is a standardisation of education and training across operational areas such as the EU the way forward? • How do current training systems and methods compare to what is required to adapt to future threats? 12:00 PM – Networking Lunch About your Focus Day Moderator Isto Matilla is a maritime expert and Research and Development Director at Laurea University of Applied Sciences. He is responsible for research, development and innovation in the area of security, safety and social responsibility. Previous to this, he worked for 6 years in DG MARE of the European Commission working within Cross sectoral cooperation, European Coast Guard development, Information exchange environment between various sectors, Maritime Security Strategy and dual use concept (civil-military cooperation).
