Suggestions for improvement This study intend to: Identify the overall patterns regarding land pollution with varying levels of urbanization Discover the human-induced factors (especially with land-use) and their affects on a human-induced phenomenon (land pollution) over space and time Compare, generalize and integrate the statistics regarding the level of land pollution between the new and old districts of an urban area (divided according to the general age of the districts’ buildings and infrastructure) and to formulate an explanation for the data retrieved Explain in depth and detail the relationships between the city system and land pollution: how the land use and urban planning of an urbanized zone (varies with its age, which affects its carrying capacity and ecological footprint) affects the frequency of waste disposal and urban renewal projects Definition the degradation of Earth's land surfaces often caused by human activities and their misuse of land resources. It occurs when waste is not disposed properly. Health hazard disposal of urban and industrial wastes, exploitation of minerals, and improper use of soil by inadequate agricultural practices are a few factors. Urbanization and industrialization are major causes of land pollution. Wan Chai is an area situated at the western part of the Wan Chai District in the northern shore of Hong Kong Island (see Figure 1). It is bounded by Canal Road in the east, Arsenal Street in the west and Bowen Road in the south, and includes Wan Chai North which is the area north of Gloucester Road. The boundary of Wan Chai (see Figure 2) is our study area boundary as well. Wan Chai District Figure 1_Map of Hong Kong Highlighting Wan Chai District Figure 2 Boundary of Wan Chai The Wan Chai Development Phase II (WDII) Project is the final phase of the Central and Wan Chai Reclamation. The WDII Project will provide land for essential transport infrastructure, including the Central-Wan Chai Bypass (CWB), the Island Eastern Corridor Link (IECL), the MTR North Hong Kong Island Line (NIL) and the fourth rail harbour crossing section of the Shatin to Central Link (SCL). In providing land for key transport infrastructure and facilities, opportunity is taken to improve the waterfront, with open plazas, landscaped areas, marinas, leisure, cultural and entertainment facilities, for the enrichment of Hong Kong's quality of life. The level of land pollution varies according to the age The old district of Wan Chai would have a higher level of land pollution . more littering and urban renewal projects such as construction/repair sites on land . dense commercial, residential and mixed land-use New district of Wan Chai would have had a lower level of land pollution . less waste disposal and more areas/tools to absorb the waste produced by the place . mixed (but sparse) institutional, recreational, commercial and transport land use land use: Mixed (commercial, residential, industrial) type and the structure of the buildings looks rather old and worn out no precise or in depth planning done Urban renewal projects Land use . Instituitional . Transport Urban planning Age of buildings Observation . Rubbish counting . Rubbish bin investigation ▪ Contents ▪ Type (gov. / recycle / blue / orange / green) Photo-taking Labeling on Map Old district: New District: Less rubbish bins (semi-full) Less littering or cigarettes (<30) Streets are more clean and tidy New District New District More rubbish in Old district than New Old: Bottles, cups, Wrapping paper, newspapers, plastic bags New: random scraps of paper Better Environment in New district . Takes care of land . Urban planning . Sign boards on walls . Tourists Old Wan Chai: . commercial and residential, with markets, car- repair shops and construction sites New Wan Chai: . parks, tourism hotspot and harbor More commercial waste, less domestic/industrial: bottles + cigarette buds . Brown Recycle bins * No details on the land use planning of Wai Chai - do not know the actual distance between each rubbish bin. Solution: do it by observation * plan to measure the distance between each rubbish bin. - but it was difficult to measure --> too crowded Solution: label the location of each bin on the map -->measure distance on the map * the road called Lee Tung Street is under construction - can't pass through Solution: give up collecting data at that location * the data may not be accurate enough - because the data will change in a period of time Solution: should collect the data in different time --> if time is allowed .
