For more information, please visit the Hindu Temple of Rochester Web site at : www.hindutempleofrochester.com Purushartha Hinduism developed a doctrine that life has different goals according to a person's stage of life and position. These goals became codified in the 'goals of a person' or 'human goals', the purusharthas, especially in sacred texts about dharma called 'dharma shastras' of which the 'Laws of Manu' is the most famous. In these texts three goals of life are expressed, namely virtuous living or dharma, profit or worldly success, and pleasure, especially sexual pleasure as a married householder and more broadly aesthetic pleasure. A fourth goal of liberation (moksha) was added at a later date. The purusharthas express an understanding of human nature, that people have different desires and purposes which are all legitimate in their context. Over the centuries there has been discussion about which goal was most important. Towards the end of the Mahabharata (Shantiparvan 12.167) there is a discussion about the relative importance of the three goals of dharma, profit and pleasure between the Pandava brothers and the wise sage Vidura. Vidura claims that dharma is most important because through it the sages enter the absolute reality, on dharma the universe rests, and through dharma wealth is acquired. One of the brothers, Arjuna, disagrees, claiming that dharma and pleasure rest on profit. Another brother, Bhima, argues for pleasure or desire being the most important goal, as only through desire have the sages attained liberation. This discussion recognises the complexity and varied nature of human purposes and meanings in life. The sages, the enlightened, the Siddha men, who are rich in tapahsiddhi, stand before Lord Shankara with a very humble sense of humility. For the devotee- humility is the main thing. Without it, no matter how much is done, can grace be obtained so quickly? With the sight of the eye, in front of the Mahayoga Yogi who burnt Manmadha. O Mind! what is your capacity? Mind let go of the ego and worship Mahadeva. What would it be like to bathe in seawater and interpret the ocean with those seawater? O Mahadeva! form of Shiva Shakti, I humbly ask you to give me the fortune to worship you with the flowers of words you have given me. The Brahma Deva say to the Sri Mahadeva, "Hey! Some of them would object even to this illustration of their engagement with what have come to be understood as two different world religions, and perhaps they are better described as pilgrims in uncharted territory. Nonetheless, my debt and gratitude, particularly to those I am privileged to call friends. Many librarians and archivists have been helpful and generous in my researches over the years. Related to this thesis, particular thanks are due to the librarians and archivists at the United Theological College in Bangalore, the archivists of the CMS collection at the University of Birmingham, and the librarians and archivists at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. The late Fr. James Stuart of the Brotherhood House in Delhi provided access to books and abundant encouragement, and his successors there have continued to provide hospitable access. Thanks are also due to Bishop Raphy Manjaly and Rev. Joseph D’Souza of the diocese of Varanasi of the Roman Catholic Church for making copies of The Pilgrim in their possession available to me.

OM NAMO BHAGAVATE PANDURANGAYA BALAJI VANI Volume 9, Issue 11 November, 2015 HARI OM In Month of October, many activities were performed in temple and many devotees attended various programs. Temple celebrated Navratri. Several cultural activities like tabala, Bharatanatyam, kuchipudi, odissi dance, violin, abhisheka, homa, chandi patha and satsang are performed at Temple and Ananda hall. Swami Narayanandaji talked about Navratri. Navratri festival The Navratri festival is the nine-day celebration to honor the very soul of the universe – the divine holy mother. It is celebrated twice a year, once in Chaitra masa and the other in Ashwija masa. The nine night’s festival of Navratri begins on the first day of Ashwija masa (Month) of the bright fortnight. The festival comes to an end on the tenth day of Vjay Dashmi or Dussehra. Dussehra, meaning ‘ten days’, becomes dasara in popular parlance. The Navratri festival or ‘nine day festival’ becomes ‘ten day festival’ Namastheasthu Mahamaaye Sripeete Surapoojithe | with the addition of the last day, Vijayadashami which is its Shankha Chakra Gadhahasthe Maha Lakshmi Namosthuthe|| culmination. • Jan-Feb 2015 Editor’S Note by Rajani Sohni
Hindu Samaj Temple of Minnesota Jan-Feb 2015 Editor’s Note By Rajani Sohni Wishing all our readers a Very Happy and Prosperous 2015! The past year was an eventful one for our Temple. Along with celebrating all the major festivals, the Hindu Samaj Temple hosted and participated in community events sponsored by ASHA and other groups. The Temple premises are busier than ever before with language, yoga, dance and mu- sic classes being held on practically every day of the week. The scheduling team has done a fabulous job accommodating all the different groups. Record numbers of devotees attended Diwali festivities at the Temple last year! I know that it took me at least ten minutes to get into the main Temple from the entrance – there were so many people! The Diwali cultural program had close to 500 people attending. This is again an indica- tion that our community is growing and that we have outgrown our space at the current Temple. The Temple Board of Directors and Board of Trustees have jointly been working hard to bring the new Temple plans to fruition. Fundraising initi- atives included introducing annual Puja sponsorship options for deities of choice. The response from the community has been amazing! The plan is to continue providing these options to devotees again this year. The Annual General Body Meeting is scheduled to be held on Sunday, February 8th, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Please plan to attend this meeting for an update of all Temple activities and plans for our new Temple. The next major event coming up in February is Maha Shiv Ratri.

These entities have magnificent absorbtive capacity. Innumerable external influences and internal pulls and pressures notwithstanding, the core of the thought and psyche remains intact. That is why the spirit of Tirtha Yatras is undying. Those who feel that following all of the principles of Dharma in essence may be difficult and even impractical in modern times, Tirtha visits as and when possible and practical could be refreshing escape routes from monotony and alternative means of „Punya and Purushartha‟.
