University of San Diego Archive• THE CITY... San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern me­ tropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year­ round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development.

Meteorologists claim San Diego as the country's only area with perfect climate. This ideal year-round environment posts an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, with an annual rainfall average of less than 10 inches. Most days are sunny, with humidity generally low, even in the summer. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City."

The city has mostly avoided the evils of urban sprawl, which has allowed its downtown to remain vibrant, espe­ cially the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego is also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as Sea World. The city is great for families, but for those without kids, there is a lot to do as well.

San Diego is home to a number of military bases, primarily due to its location. In 1941 , after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the U.S. established the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet in San Diego, and the city is now home to the largest air naval station on the west coast. Petco Park - Home of the Padres Unlike many cities, San Diego's airport is right next to downtown, increasing its convenience even more. It is hard to believe that San Diego is the nation's sixth-largest city, it just retains a small town feel.

According to Sports Illustrated, "For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail , swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 80 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1, 158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying.

As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams -- the NFL Chargers play at Qualcomm Stadium, and the San Diego Padres play at Petco Park. During college football bowl week, San Diego annually hosts the San Diego County Credit Union Poinset­ tia Bowl and the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in late December. During 1998, Qualcomm Stadium hosted the Super Bowl game between Denver and Green Bay; followed by the World Series between the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees. The Super Bowl returned to San Diego in 2003. Whatever sporting activity there is , it's here in San Diego Children's Cove in La Jolla -- the sports capital of the U.S.! THE CAMPUS ... The University of San Diego is an independent Catholic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid -Alcala de Henares. Found­ ed by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Chris­ tians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD's architectural style.

Under the leadership of Mother Rosalie Hill of the So- ciety of the Sacred Heart and Bishop Charles Francis Joan Kroc Peace & Justice Center Buddy of the Diocese of San Diego, the University of San Diego began as separate colleges for men and women. The first classes met in 1952; the School of Law opened its doors in 1954. By the late 1960's it became clear that both colleges would benefit from combining academic resources, and in 1972 the University of San Diego became a single coeducational Catholic university.

Now governed by a board of trustees independent from the founding organizations, USO is a Roman Catholic institution that welcomes students, faculty and staff of diverse religions, traditions and remains dedicated to the values originally articulated by Mother Hill and Bishop Buddy. Students choose from more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degrees programs in academic divisions including the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Leadership and Education Sciences, Law and Nursing and Health Science.

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturally unique institutions in the country, featuring major buildings designed in an or­ namental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed numerous major construction and expansion projects. In 2000 the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a 5, 100-seat athletic center, opened its doors as home to USO basketball and volleyball. Two years ago, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice opened on the west end of campus, and in 2003 the Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology opened. A five-story Spanish Renaissance parking garage (1,100 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped foun­ tain plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. USO enrolls more than 7,600 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Admission to USO, which consistently ranks among the top schools in the nation, is highly selective. USO received more than 7,800 applications for approximately 1,100 under­ graduate openings in Fall of 2005. The class of 2009 entered with a GPA of 3.74 and an average SAT score of 1176. USO has earned recogn ition in such publications as the 2006 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide as being one of the best colleges in the United States. The Princeton Review recently included USO as one of the nation's most socially conscious institutions in its book, Colleges with a Lecture Hall in the Joan B. Kroc Ctr. Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. USO in 2003, joined the elite company of Phi Beta Kappa, the nations oldest honor society. The USO Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to promote the academic development t JL ~ ~ of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support Services are I designed to enhance the student-athlete's overall collegiate experience and encourage develop­ ment and attainment of academic and career goals. 41"1 "A All USO student-athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring services. The mentor- " ing program, Torero Blue and MenTorero, were redeveloped in 2005 and team a graduate student in the counseling program with an athlete who would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resources, receive guidance on goal development and attainment, and benefit from guided group study. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computer center. In addition, student-athletes are encouraged to utilize the campus learning centers including the Writing , Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer Labs.

Sarabeth Pollock begins her second year as the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support for the Uni­ versity of San Diego. She has worked as a tutor in the Athletic Department since the fall of 2001 . She serves as the academic advisor for all sports except Football and Rowing. Her responsibilities include the supervision of the Study Hall and the administration of the tutoring and mentoring programs. Cur­ rently, the Academic Support Program employs over 25 tutors who represent a variety of majors across campus, as well as over 12 mentors who are graduate students pursuing their masters degrees in US D's Counseling Program. The Study Hall and computer lab are open for student-athlete use all year long ; during the semester they are open 60 hours per week and provide a quiet, studious atmosphere to foster academic excellence. Sarabeth Pollock Sarabeth graduated from USO in 2002 in the Honors Program, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in Academic Support Political Science and History. She speaks Spanish and French fluently. A 5th generation San Diegan, she resides in Point Loma with her family. In her spare time, Sarabeth enjoys working on her novel that she hopes to have published by the end of the year.

Robyn Fortney begins her second year as the Coordinator of Athletic Student Services for USO . She coordinates the CHAMPS/Life Skills program which promotes the personal development of student-athletes. Also, she is an Academic Counselor to Football , Women 's Rowing and Men's Rowing . From nearby Rancho Bernardo, Fortney earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, with a minor in Leadership, from USO in 2002 . She was a four-year member of the USO women's basketball team between 1998-2002, including the 2000 squad that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 2004 , she received her Master's Degree in Sport Management from the University of San Francisco. Student life at the University of San Diego is coordinated through Associated Students, the student-composed governing body of the university. This group of students creates most of the events on campus including dances, barbecues, and special guest speakers, such as Sat­ urday Night Live comedian Horatio Sanz. Off-campus excursions have also been sponsored by AS, such as trips to see the Harlem Globetrotters perform at the San Diego Sports Arena and bus trips to Disneyland and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Through the Office of University Ministry, the strong Catholic tradition of USO is manifested through the student body. UM provides the campus with opportuni­ ties to attend and participate in weekly Mass and offers retreats throughout the semester. Service projects such as Tijuana Spring Breakthrough, a house building project in Tijuana and Baja California, give students the chance to get involved in providing assistance to those less fortunate. UM also sponsors outreach programs, both on campus and in the local Linda Vista community, including tutoring and mentoring.

Campus Recreation offers students a way to destress through fitness classes, such as yoga , kickboxing, and aerobics, and through extracur­ ricular classes, including ballroom dancing and massage. Classes in sailing, surfing and scuba r':'- Jfl-- diving allow students to get outside in the beauti­ ful San Diego weather and learn new activities. The intramural program is an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the -- USO community partaking in intramural sports. Students cheering on the basketball team Sports range from the widely known flag football, basketball, and volleyball to the lesser-known, yet still widely popular, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball.

Besides their tournament on March 2-4, San Diego will participate in two tourna­ ments; one at UC Riverside and the other at cross-town rival San Diego State. "Our pre-conference schedule is very challenging and will prepare us to compete for the PCSC title and a post season bid," comments McElvain. "Our schedule is also very geo­ graphically diverse, fielding teams from ten different states: California, Rhode Island, Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Oregon, New York, Colorado, North Dakota, and Connecticut." Coach McElvain is personally very excited about USD's trip to Stillwater, Oklahoma for a three game series against Oklahoma State, her alma mater. "It will be exciting to coach against the team I played for and show my team where my rural college experience took place," joked McElvain. As the second Favorite food: assistant, Aggabao primarily works with the infield and hitting. She will also take on the role of first Pancit, Lumpia & Rica base coach this season . My hero growing up: Aggabao comes to USO from UC San Diego , where she graduated in 2004 as a Biology major. My grandma She was a four-year starter as a middle infielder for the Triton softball team and was named team Pre-game ritual: captain both her junior and senior year. KY SNYDER Executive Director of Athletics Ky Snyder was named Executi ve Director of Athletics at the University of San Diego on December 10th, 2003. Dr. Mary E. Lyons, USO President, introduced Snyder who returns to USO where he was Director of Athletic Development between 1990- 1996. He came back to USO from the San Diego International Sports Counc il where he held the position of President. With the San Diego International Sports Council , the Snyder's primary responsibility was to promote San Diego/Tijuana as the preferred region for sporting events and activities that benefit the community both economically and socially. Recent accomplish­ ments of the Sports Council bid efforts include securing for San Diego the 1997 and 1998 ESPN Summer X Games, the Suzuki Rock 'n' Roll Marathon , the 1999 Major League Soccer All-Star Game , the inaugural Bank of America/U.S. Olympic Cup, NCAA Division I Men's Basketball First & Second Round (2001) contests, the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships ' (2001 ) and Super Bowl XXXVII. In the spring of 2001 , Snyder was named the Pres ident of the San Diego Super Bowl XXXV II Host Committee. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the San Diego NFL Youth Education Town and the San Diego Super Bowl Task Force . Snyder was also the Executive Director of the San Diego International Sports Foundation . Prior to joining the SDISC , Sn yder was the Director of Athletic Development at the Un iversity of San Diego for six years. At USO he was responsible for establishing the Torero Athletic Association , fun d-ra ising efforts for athletics, managing athletic special events and generating corporate sponsorship of athletics. At USO he oversees an athletic department with sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams and approximately 400 student- athletes. He is responsible for all administrative, management and supervisory aspects of the Department of Athletics. Additionally, he oversees the strategic long-range planning and monitoring of budgets, personnel, programs, faci lities, fundraising , promotions and marketing , and public relations for an NCAA Division I program consisting of eight sports for men and eight sports for women . He serves on the NCAA Division I Football Rules Committee, the West Coast Conference TV Committee , Marketing Committee and Women 's Basketball Committee. Snyder played football at San Diego State University. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing from San Diego State University and has studied in the Master's Leadership Program at the University of San Diego . He is a guest lecturer at the University of San Diego 's MBA Sports Management program and the SDSU Hospitality Management program. Snyder, who has been a San Diego resident for 24 years , has a very athletic family. His wife , Sue , was a former standout member of the United States women's national volleyball team who played at San Diego State and also coached the Aztecs and University of San Diego's women 's volleyball teams. In addition , Snyder's father, Lester, held the position as President of the United States Tennis Association .
