It has an attractive 'pearmain' shape. This is a fairly dry apple - which is perhaps not regarded as a desirable attribute today. In spite of this it is actually a very enjoyable apple, with a rich aromatic flavour which in apple terms is usually described as Although it had 'shelf appeal' for the Victorian housewife, its autumnal colouring is probably too subdued to compete with the bright young things of the modern supermarket shelves. A choice seedling, Aerlie Red Flesh has a beautiful yellow skin with pale whitish dots, but it is inside that it excels. Deep rose red flesh, juicy, crisp, hard, sugary and richly flavored, ripening late (October) and keeping throughout the winter. The late Conrad Gemmer, an astute observer of apples with 500 varieties in his collection, rated Hidden Rose an outstanding variety of top quality. -

Phytophthora Collar Rot of Apple
report on RPD No. 812 PLANT September 1988 DEPARTMENT OF CROP SCIENCES DISEASE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN PHYTOPHTHORA COLLAR ROT OF APPLE Phytophthora collar rot or crown rot is normally caused by Phytophthora cactorum. Other species of Phytophthora, includ- ing P. megasperma and P. cambivora, can sometimes be involved in collar rot. Phytophthora cactorum is a common, widely distributed, soilborne fungus with a very wide host range, attacking about 200 different species of plants in over 80 genera. It is a serious disease of certain cultivars of apples and pears, but the fungus will also infect stone fruits and strawberries. The disease was a minor problem when apple trees were propagated on seedling rootstocks except where ‘Grimes golden’ apples were grown. Phytophthora collar rot has become a serious problem on certain clonal, dwarfing rootstocks which have largely replaced seedling rootstocks. The disease is primarily a problem on sites that are poorly drained or are irrigated by flooding. High soil moisture is essential for the survival and movement of, and infection by, the Phytophthora fungus. Trees are most susceptible in spring about the time of flowering. They begin to become relatively resistant during the period of shoot growth. Collar rot lesions expand rapidly during spring and slowly during the remainder of the growing season. The fungus was once thought to attack only mature trees. Research has shown that trees of any age, including seedlings, are susceptible. -

2016 1 Winter 2016 LOTS OF NEW APPLES COMING TO OUR NOTICE! By Robert A. Norton, Ph.D. Over the years I have written numerous lists of my favorite apple varieties (cultivars). Some lists were broken down into favorite dessert, cooking, and cider varieties, as well as ones to avoid because of defects, such as disease susceptibility or growing problems. Have you noticed all the new varieties being introduced at the grocery store lately? Some examples: Jazz, Aurora, Candy Crisp, Pinova, Corail, Zestar, and Silken. Some, Inside: if not most, of these are so-called “club” apples, because they are owned by an organiza- tion, a packer, or a marketing group whose goal is to derive a premium price in the mar- New Apples p 1-2 ket by limiting the volume or the distribution of the variety.
