Otherwise its lovely now not to need a coat when outside.

Lovely Church BBQ evening thanks to all.

A few matters that have come up recently, one is the parking at the Hall. To make life easier for all and make max space it is best to park nose into the bank. Never block the access to Talaton Cottage, it is in use night and day. Obviously not al can park like this as the area narrows, but if your tail is off the road please park into the bank, even for casual use.

To give everyone Notice, Both of the Hall store sheds are being cleared of all extraneous items not used by the Hall on 7th September. If you think there are items that are yours, please let me know so we can arrange removal, otherwise all that is not the Halls, is being disposed of.

Finally the Hall Committee has vacancies for Co-option. We lost Badger and we still don’t have a Church Rep on the committee. Please let me know if you are interested to come on board and help out. We have an AGM in October and welcome new members with new ideas and vigour and we don’t bite (not to leave scars anyway!!).

The Talaton Summer BBQ 2019

Another year – another successful, happy village occasion and another big thank you to all helpers and to everyone who came and joined in what was a really fun day.

Once again the weather was on our side – a huge relief. A wonderful army of helpers, under Arnie’s eagle eye, made light work of the gazebos, tables and chairs in both the putting up and taking down. In fact what could have been a chore became good fun.

Gerry and Reg and their wonderfully enthusiastic family of helpers did sterling work producing burgers and hot dogs until supplies were almost exhausted. Andy and Jan with their brave assistant worked non- stop and even a very human and happy group of Robots were seen working away in the corner (the hoops did go over and the pegs were not stuck to the line). Too many to thank individually but please be sure each and eve- ry one of you was hugely appreciated.

One final thank you to the very generous draw prize donors, arranged by Rick. So, thank you The Pig in Combe, Larkbeare Grange, Talaton Inn, Roger and Andrea Down, Matt Kingdon, Melanie and Peter Forward, Wildwood Estate, Talaton Community Shop and Otter Nurseries.

We had sweet music, good food and drink but, as always, the thing that really mattered was the bringing together of everyone in friendship and fun.

Thank you all and see you next year. Sue Harwood

Presented through Carn to Cove November 15th At the Talaton Parish Hall The Black Feathers

More details Next issue

About The Black Feathers from their Web site The ability to write songs that are both ancient and modern is a rare thing. The prod- uct of an arcane art of weaving in traditional influences so thoroughly that they be- come the warp and waft of fresh creations.

Based in Gloucestershire, The Black Feathers made up of Ray Hughes and Sian Chan- dler, are two such talents. They first became aware of the magic between them while collaborating on several music projects, becoming The Black Feathers and life partners in 2012.

Americana, folk, and acoustic Indierock sensibilities coexist comfortably in their musi- cal worls, with Hughes’ guitar work buoying the kind of harmonies often only heard in family bands.

Its been an incredible year for The Black Feathers. Their debut album was met with critical acclaim and broke into the Top Ten in the Itunes Country chart and the Offi- cial UK Americana Chart. A live album recorded at the Convent in Stroud has also just been released and very well received. ______Page 11 Talaton Inn Hope everybody is enjoying this lovely weather. ______Page 13 Rainfall at the Cobblers / 100 Club Rainfall at Talaton During June 2019.

June started warm and sunny, then came a spell of rain and it turned unseasonably cold and very wet. On the 10th I recorded here 28.00 mls or 1.12 inches in 24 hours. The month continued unsettled with more rain and some thunderstorms till the last 2 weeks when it became very hot and very dry. In fact we had no recordable rain, and by that I mean under ½ a mls, for the last 11 days of the month.

Here in Talaton I recorded 75.50ms or 3.02 inches of rain, we had 14 days with no rain and our yearly total stands at 17.25 inches.

Over the whole Country the rainfall was 152% of the average, but some areas had twice their normal monthly rainfall. The maxi- mum temperature in the UK was recorded at Heathrow of 34.0C on 29th, and the lowest of -0.3C at Redesdale in Northumberland. Wainfleet in Lincolnshire had 74.6ms or nearly 2 inches in 24 hours.

August is traditionally time to enjoy the fruits of your labour and it is no coincidence that our annual show is held this month. Our re- cent very warm, dry weather has made testing times for some gar- deners, more time needed for watering, but perhaps that has been offset by less time needed to mow the lawn. It will be interesting to see whether any of us have broad beans or any soft fruit left to exhibit. Perhaps the early harvest of raspberries, currants and gooseberries will mean bumper preserve entries, let’s hope so.

Many crops have matured early, but the growing season is not over yet. There is still time to plant many seeds for cropping later this summer, mangetout, carrots, salad leaves, radishes to name but a few.

Do feed tomatoes, courgettes, pumpkins and squashes.

Tie up tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers to help support the devel- oping fruits.

Don’t forget to keep dead heading your flowering plants to encour- age more flower buds to form.

Good luck to all exhibitors. Please come and enjoy the show even if you feel you have nothing to exhibit. Everyone is welcome once the judging is over.

Happy gardening.

Parson’s Page

Dear Friend’s, Last month I did my best to explain what exactly the Church of England is and how it relates to that old building down the lane in Talaton. This month we plunge into the world of readings, hymns and prayers. Do we just choose the readings we feel like having from the bible every week and then chuck in some of our favourite hymns and a few random prayers? Well it might seem a bit like that sometimes, but the answer is no, we don’t.

The CofE uses a cycle of readings which more or less runs through the whole bible over a three-year period which are listed in reference book called the Lectionary. The Lectionary gives several different readings for every single day of the year from both the Old Testament and the New and covers from Advent to eve of the following Advent (that’s the Christmas period). What this ensures is that whoever is preaching regularly cannot just stick to the passages they like.

So, having been given the readings for each service the minister needs to write a sermon to preach, this sermon will have a theme and having decided what it is the minister will need to choose hymns which express that theme. In Talaton we are hugely fortunate to have a small team of volunteers with an extensive knowledge of hymns to do this for us.

Which brings us on to the prayers; the framework for most services is out- lined in one of several resources ministers use, there is the truly ancient ‘Book of Common Prayer’ for example or the slightly more modern ‘Common Worship’, these include a huge number of different styles of services with additional resources like confessional prayers and blessings. Although most services follow a basic set pattern throughout the year there are often ad- ditional prayers which mark particular seasons or festivals in the calendar of the church such as Advent, Christmas, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and so on.

A church service is an attempt to draw all of these things together, the readings, the hymns and prayers into one unified whole which is not just up- lifting but also contains some real teaching and hope. Blessings

Walk For the Month August 2019

Taleford to Escot estate and back via Black Aller Covert.

Map OS Explorer 115 Exmouth and Sidmouth 1:25000. An easy but fun walk of 3.5 miles, mostly on grassy tracks and a very short stretch of lanes. See the historic Escot House, water meadows and acres of open parkland, not to mention the stroll along the River Tale and an incredible potter through the woods of Black Aller Covert. Magic.

Drive to the hamlet of Taleford, just over a mile outside Ottery St Mary on the Fairmile road moving right into Gosford Lane just after the garage. (If approaching from Talaton, cross over at Fairmile and just before the garage move left into Gosford Lane.) Just after the bridge and flood warning sign park just off the road by the Public Footpath sign – or anywhere nearby! Walk up the slight hill and bear left at the junction. Along this very quiet lane for only a couple of hundred yards to the main road. Lovely view of the Church. Cross with care and move left on the thin pavement to find the ______Page 25 track to Escot Church off right.

Move right around the Church – interesting organic toilets in the Church- yard – to find the small wooden gate. Left, and pass under the busy and noisy A30. Move uphill and then left on to the first Public footpath that will take you into Escot Estate lands. Pass over open grounds towards the copse and another wooden gate. Follow the copse on your right a short way then drop down diagonally left to a simple tree trunk bridge over the mighty River Tale. Now, a wonderful potter right along the Tale on the permissive path soaking up the great views in all directions. Could be Otters around! You will be walking alongside the ancient Tale Valley Water meadows, wee bit neglected but the outlines still visible. At the estate road a choice. Left to the Wildwood Park shop, restaurant and ticket office for the attractions (Otters, Wolves, climbing, Birds of Prey …….) or right along the estate road.

Escot House dates from 1794 and was rebuilt in the Georgian style in 1837 following a fire in 1808. It remains the family home of the Ken- naways.

Either way, maybe after your café or Wildwood stop, (still plenty of time ) continue right up the hill, passing Clapperentale Cottages and the Old Eng- lish apple species orchards, set in 2001. Pass Middle Lodge and very soon take the forest track right into Black Aller Covert. Whoa ! What an avenue of woodland, just beautiful. (Aller is the older and alternative name for Alder.)

This is a truly delightful 1000 yds. of trees, bluebells, ferns, Magic! At the end bear right and continue for more wonderful forest walking to arrive at a sort of clearing / junction. Straight across to find a complex of gates. Left through a small wooden kissing gate and follow the hedge on your left to exit the open land. Follow the track down to pass under the A30 but at the Church continue uphill on the good track and even- tually meet the road. With great care move right and cross on to the quiet lane. Remember it? Potter along the lane, right and down to your car.
