The first train station stop in Colma, (now Daly City) was called the Schoolhouse Station stop. This was because there were so few buildings in the area and the one room school on San Pedro Road stood out as a landmark. On October 12, 1870 the San Francisco and San Jose Railroad, which had been in existence since 1863, was absorbed by the Southern Pacific. This Schoolhouse stop, which was the second stop in Daly City after Union . Park, was a busy passenger and freight loading area. It was located on Railroad Ave. -- '150 feet north of Washington Street. Now it is the BART right of way along the side ofHwy 280. There was a box factory, many packing sheds for vegetables and the famous Biggio's Gambling Hall near by.

The Colma Depot was built in 1881 by Southern Pacific and because of the increased activity inthe railroad yard after 1911J it was moved to the east side of the main tracts between San Pedro Road and WashingtonStreets, alongside the Southern Pacific freight shed on Railroad Avenue. It remained there until BART purchased the, Southern Pacific right of way to build the extension to the Colma Station.

The train had 21 stops between San Francisco and San Jose. Time was three and a half hours to complete one way. Cost of ticket was $2.50 compared to $32.00 for stage coach fare. In the beginning they averaged 700 passengers per day. There was recorded freight the first four months of206,618Ibs. of vegetables, 1,000 tons of grain and 1,000 pigs. We also shipped flowers.

In 1904 the Bayshore cutoff was begun and when completed much of the passenger service switched to the new route and our line was used mainly for freight and funeral business. The train depot was used mostly as an office and weighing station. The scale is still in the building today. Regular scheduled passenger traffic ceased in 1928 and the last recorded special excursion train ran through the station in 1956.

BART had to move the station to San Pedro Road, just west of Holy Angels Church in 1990. It had been used as an office for Crossroads Realty. In 1993 it was moved to Colma on Serramonte Blvd. and E1 Camino Real, the last of moves for this historic building. It is to be restored and used as an office and museum for the ColJrna Historical Association. Preserving this 115 year old train depot will be a labor oflove as it is the preservation of the history of our community, Written by Pat Hatfield

A COMMUNITY THAT WORKS TOGETHER

Do you remember that very important day in Sterling Park called Earwig Day? That is when we all banded together to fight earwigs in our community. On a designated day we all dispensed around our houses and yards earwig bait or paint thinner to kill those pests and it worked. We had so many earwigs in our neighborhood that it was common to have many roaming in our houses every day. How many earwigs do we see now? This took place back in the 1950s.
