Pinos Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011 Moorpark College Astronomy Professor and SBR member Hal Jandorf once again will take 50 of us to the summit of Mt. Pinos for an incredible evening of star-gazing!

Overnight Accommodations Available At: Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Frazier Park 612 WAINWRIGHT COURT, Lebec , CA 93243 661-248-1600 5 Freeway, Frazier Park Exit, West side Meet at 6:30 p.m. in the Holiday Inn Express parking lot, where a $5-per-person activity fee will be collected. We’ll depart at 7:00 p.m. (sharp!) and travel the roads of Lake of the Woods, crossing the San Andreas Fault several times. We’ll enter Cuddy Val- ley with verdant pastures and farms. Then, our Porsches will gain altitude from 5,000 feet to almost 9,000 feet along an amazing, curvy, pine-edged road leading to a large mountain parking lot. This is called Chula Vista. Mount Pinos is the best stargazing observation spot in Southern California, far away from light pollution and moisture. The union of trees and sky is absolutely stunning! There, at an altitude of 8800 feet, we’ll set up telescopes and enjoy a bring-your- own picnic dinner until the twilight dims. As the stars appear, I’ll point out the constellations. We’ll find colorful double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies and count how many falling stars (meteors) you see! We’ll witness the magnificent Milky Way, and comprehend the scale of our universe and how humble humanity truly is. Yet, we are an integral part of the cosmos. I highly recommend staying at the hotel for the night. That will allow you more observation time by avoiding the drive home at night! It gets dark at 9:00 p.m., so plan on staying longer. I usually leave the observation site at midnight; it’s about a 30-minute drive to the hotel. On our Sunday morning drive to Ojai, we’ll travel some of the best Porsche roads in California: Lockwood Valley and Highway 33. Then, enjoy a no-host lunch in Ojai. This will complete the sky and earth parts of our small cosmic adventure! Please RSVP soon, and I’ll email you full details on what you should bring along to enhance your experience. 14 June 2011 • Santa Barbara Region • Porsche Club of America • www.pcasb.org R.U.F. Finds Gold In Beverly Hills By Nicolas Liakas orty members of our Retired and Unemployed Folks (R.U.F.) Committee headed to Beverly Hills the afternoon of April 26, 2011 to visit the home of Stanley Gold and to Fmarvel at his glorious collection of Porsches. From beginning to end, this was an adventure that departed from our customary agendas and itineraries. The traditional and typical R.U.F. outing commences at about 10 a.m. For this event, the group gathered at 1 p.m. Our trip was to utilize our alternative vehicles so as to carpool into the wild and furious L.A. County roads. Further, we eschewed our well-known mustering site of the Costco parking lot in Westlake Village for a location across the street from it and in front of the Staples mega store. The preconceived notion was that the Costco lot would be basically inaccessible at that time of the day, and our resident guru on parking lots suggested Staples as an alternative certain to provide vast numbers of open parking spaces. To our dismay, that lot was completely full for the lunchtime visitors, so a scramble ensued for open spots. Finally, the participants would be celebrating dinner, not lunch, together at a mall. Continued on Page 16

www.pcasb.org • Porsche Club of America • Santa Barbara Region • June 2011 15 R.U.F. Finds Gold In Beverly Hills Continued from Page 15 Despite the innovations, contradictions and alterations in event coordination and planning, we managed to depart on time and headed east on Highway 101 into Studio City. We were delighted that we reached the Coldwater Canyon off-ramp without encountering any of the usual traffic backups and delays on one of the busiest freeways in America. Even the drive into the Hollywood Hills and down into Beverly Hills was without a hitch. A right- hand turn here, followed by another right-hand turn there, and then a left turn onto Sunset Boulevard with a right turn on North Alpine Drive brought us to the home of Stanley Gold.

Mr. Gold is a widely known and greatly respected attorney, philanthropist and personal advisor to America’s wealthiest families. He has served as Chairman of the University of Southern California’s Board of Trustees and also chaired the boards of that university’s law and medical schools. His philanthropy has

benefited many local and national cultural, religious and charitable organizations. His stewardship of private business includes his tenure on the Board of Directors of Disney, coupled with his financial planning and management of the Roy Disney family investments. To us, however, he is an avid and passionate collector and lover of all things Porsche. Mr. Gold met us at the front gate to his driveway and escorted us to the back yard.

We hardly noticed the 10,000 square foot home because our attention was quickly fixed towards the rear of the lawn where the mammoth garage stood. (This “garage” was in excess of 4,000 square feet.) There, parked in front of the garage entrance, was a silver 1961 RS61 Spyder, one of 14 ever built. What a way to start the tour! This legendary car, which Mr. Gold actually races in vintage competitions, has a four-cylinder, four-cam engine Our gracious host, Stanley Gold, in the RS61 Spyder

16 June 2011 • Santa Barbara Region • Porsche Club of America • www.pcasb.org Next to the right was a black Continental cabriolet, and to its right was a 1956 356 Speedster. The collection only got more exotic and historical as we proceeded into the depths of the garage. The collection harbored a bright red 1961 Sabra Sport manufactured in Israel, and an extremely rare 1959 Beutler-bodied Porsche cabriolet (pictured at left) .

The gawking was made civilized and educational as Mr. Gold patiently and expertly recited the history of each Porsche. It was a tour de force, a professorial and encyclopedic dissertation on dates of production, ownership provenance, racing sites and awards. Our group had not been so quiet, so silent, so mesmerized in ages. Still, the best was yet to come. We were enthralled by Stan’s announcement that he has entered to run the Beijing to Paris Rally in May of 2013. His description of the necessary preparations, including modifications to the designated Porsche to survive A very rare 1959 Beutler Porsche Cabriolet

For those curious about such things, the RS61 Spyder is worth well over As we departed his compound, Mr. Gold invited us to come seven figures. back and visit at any time. The Optimist Creed Promise yourself: To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet. To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best. To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
