    Religion in Africa The majority of Africans are adherents of the Abrahamic religions: Islam and Christianity. Both religions are widespread throughout Africa. These religions are often adapted to African cultural contexts and indigenous belief systems. It was estimated in 2000 that Christians form 45% of Africa's population, and Muslims forming 40.6%. A map of the Africa, showing the major religions distributed as of today. Map shows only the religion as a whole excluding denominations or sects of the religions, and is colored by how the religions are distributed not by main religion of country. Christianity Although Christianity existed far before the rule of King Ezana the Great of the Kingdom of Axum, the religion took a strong foothold when it was declared a state religion in 330 AD. Pinpointing a date as to when Christianity emerged in Ethiopia will always probably be a mystery. The earliest and best known reference to the introduction of Christianity was when the evangelist Phillip converted an Ethiopian traveler in the 1st Century AD from the Acts of the Apostles. Although the bible refers to them as Ethiopians, scholars have argued that Ethiopia was a common term used for encompassing the area South‐Southeast of Egypt. Other traditions have the convert as a Jew who was a steward in the Queen’s court. All accounts do agree on the fact that the traveler was a member of the royal court who successfully succeeded in converting the Queen, which in turn caused a church to be built. Rufinus of Tyre , a noted church historian, also has recorded a personal account as do other church historians such as Socrates and Sozemius.

    The Lamu house - an East African architectural enigma Gerald Steyn Department of Architecture of Technikon Pretoria. E-mail: [email protected]. Lamu is a living town off the Kenya coast. It was recently nominated to the World Heritage List. The town has been relatively undisturbed by colonization and modernization. This study reports on the early Swahili dwelling, which is still a functioning type in Lamu. It commences with a brief historical perspective of Lamu in its Swahili and East African coastal setting. It compares descriptions of the Lamu house, as found in literature, with personal observations and field surveys, including a short description of construction methods. The study offers observations on conservation and the current state of the Lamu house. It is concluded with a comparison between Lamu and Stone Town, Zanzibar, in terms of house types and settlement patterns. We found that the Lamu house is the stage for Swahili ritual and that the ancient and climatically uncomfortable plan form has been retained for nearly a millennium because of its symbolic value. Introduction The Swahili Coast of East Africa was recentl y referred to as " ... this important, but relatively little-knqwn corner of the 1 western Indian Ocean" • It has been suggested that the Lamu Archipelago is the cradle of the Swahili 2 civilization . Not everybody agrees, but Lamu Town is nevertheless a very recent addition to the World Heritage Lise. This nomination will undoubtedly attract more tourism and more academic attention. Figure 1. Hassan Information Research Specialist Knowledge Services Group Summary The attacks on U.S. soil on September 11, 2001, coupled with the rise of militant transnational Islamism, have prompted both the Bush Administration and the U.S. Congress to reassess foreign policy in Africa and to begin to give considerable attention to Africa’s Muslim populations and it’s failed and failing states. Some experts have noted that Africa’s failing and failed states may serve as a breeding ground for terrorists.1 In response to terrorist threats, the United States, in partnership with countries across Africa, has developed a range of strategies to help regional governments face the challenge of terror. Since September 11, 2001, the size of U.S. diplomatic missions in sub-Saharan African countries with large Muslim populations has increased. Presently, there are 45 active embassies in sub-Saharan Africa, including 16 new compounds built since 2001. Most recently, President Bush returned from a five-country visit to Africa, his second trip to the continent.     Horizontal inequalities in Africa: measurement issues SK Tetteh-Baah, K Harttgen, I Günther Chair of Development Economics ETH Zurich, Switzerland Abstract This study estimates different indicators of horizontal or between-group inequality to track the progress made against inequality of opportunity across 38 African countries between 1990 and 2016. Such progress largely depends on the assumptions held in measuring horizontal inequality [HI]. Previous studies have shown with traditional methods of measurement that HI has been generally falling in Africa. The traditional use of a relative measure of inequality assumes that people are sensitive to relative, not absolute, differences when comparing distributions. The traditional use of plutocratic method of weighting also assumes that majority groups count more than, not equal to, minority groups. Using data from the Demographic and Health Survey program, the study demonstrates that the traditional approach to the measurement of HI embellishes the progress made against unequal opportunities over time, compared to what more egalitarian approaches would suggest. Much of the reduction in horizontal inequalities in educational attainment and wealth in Africa, as shown in previous studies, is being driven by overall growth in living standards, and not necessarily the narrowing of absolute gaps in sub- national regional, ethnic, gender, or religious outcomes over time.
