The McLaren 720S Coupé redefined expectations in the supercar class when it was introduced in 2017. Now, the new 720S Spider delivers the exhilaration of open-air driving as an additional attraction, alongside the blend of extreme performance, breadth of capability and day-to-day usability pioneered by the Coupé.

The design foundations of the new McLaren 720S Spider are shared with the 720S Coupé, the organic shapes that comprise the second-generation McLaren Super Series combining to maximize downforce, minimize drag, enhance powertrain cooling and optimize aerodynamic balance. The forms also produce an overall appearance akin to a futuristic sculpture, styled by the air that flows over, under, around and through it.

For the new Spider, a new, electrically actuated Retractable Hard Top (RHT) and new buttresses were seamlessly integrated into the design. Like all McLaren cars, the 720S Spider has a carbon fibre core, in this case designated Monocage II-S. The strength, rigidity and light weight of the structure is the base for the dynamic excellence for which McLarens are renowned; the Monocage II-S is a development of the Coupé’s Monocage II, without the central ‘spine’ running front to rear above the cabin and with the rearmost section of the upper structure also unique, to accommodate the Retractable Hard Top. The header rail across the top of the windscreen has also been revised, to suit the RHT sealing.

Comfortably the lightest car in its competitive set, with a lightest dry weight of 2,937lb – 194lb less than the 3,131lb dry weight of its closest rival – the new 720S Spider is also lighter by 20lb than the first-

generation Super Series 650S Spider, as well as having enhanced refinement. The new Spider weighs in just 108lb – or less than 4% - above the 720S Coupé, the difference primarily associated with the RHT and tonneau system. The low weight – and stunning power-to-weight ratio of 533bhp-per-ton (in comparison to 478bhp for the 650S Spider) – is the foundation for the dynamic, performance and efficiency benefits enjoyed by owners of McLaren cars.

Engineering ingenuity, underpinned by the inherent qualities of carbon fibre, means that despite the removal of the fixed roof there is no need for additional reinforcement to maintain structural strength and rigidity; even the unusually slim windscreen A-pillars first seen on the 720S Coupé remain. To further enhance rollover protection for occupants, fixed carbon fibre supports – which are visible externally –were engineered into the rear of the Monocage II-S, additionally providing the main anchor points for the roof system and the seatbelts.

The slim tonneau buttresses improve over-the-shoulder visibility for the driver and contributes to a sensation of exceptional space overall, while also increasing aerodynamic downforce.

The cockpit-like design of the 720S Coupé is recognized for the sense of 360-degree vision it provides, allowing light to flood into the cabin and setting a new benchmark for visibility. This philosophy of unrivalled vision is central to the second-generation Super Series and the new Spider moves the game on again, with unique, glazed flying buttresses further aiding driver visibility as well as adding visual drama to the car.

The leading edge of the buttress features an aerodynamic carrier to guide airflow, before dramatically tapering off to expose darkened glazing; the design and the use of glass delivers a 12% improvement in over-the-shoulder visibility compared to the previous McLaren Super Series Spider.

To accommodate the Retractable Hard Top, the Monocage II-S features a new carbon fibre upper structure engineered to sit as close as possible to the air charge coolers and intake plenum. This maximizes luggage space; there is 2 cubic feet of stowage available under the tonneau cover with the roof raised. The tonneau cover also sits lower than that of a 650S Spider by 1in, extending rear visibility by 25ft.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged McLaren V8 engine that powers the 720S Spider is unchanged from the Coupé. Mid-mounted for exceptional handling and purity of response, it produces 710bhp and 568lb ft of torque – outputs that support extreme performance. Acceleration is nothing short of phenomenal, with 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds (0-62mph covered in 2.9 seconds) and 0-124mph achieved in just 7.9

seconds – just 0.1 seconds off the pace of the Coupé. The standing quarter mile sprint is dispatched in 10.4 seconds – again, only 0.1 seconds slower than the Coupé – and where conditions allow, the 720S Spider will continue accelerating to a Coupé-matching top speed of 212mph with the roof raised. Even with the roof lowered, maximum speed remains extraordinary at 202mph. The minor variations in performance arise from differing aerodynamics and weight.

The Retractable Hard Top (RHT) of the 720S Spider is a completely new design, with a one-piece, carbon fibre roof panel as standard. The hardtop maintains the distinctive silhouette and aerodynamic purity of the 720S Coupé and provides a full carbon fibre upper structure when the roof is closed. The folding mechanism for McLaren’s new RHT is electrically rather than hydraulically driven and the system is the fastest-operating convertible roof in the supercar class, with the retractable hard top lowered or raised in just 11 seconds – six seconds quicker than the 650S Spider. The combination of e-motors and the strength and light weight of the carbon fibre RHT enables a maximum vehicle speed during operation of 31mph – a significant increase from the 18.5mph of the 650S. With these performance statistics, it is no surprise that McLaren has registered three worldwide patents for the roof system.

The new RHT is twice as quiet in operation as the first-generation Super Series convertible, a serenity that is indicative of exceptional refinement overall. That noise levels inside the cabin of the Spider with the roof raised are measurably less than those experienced in a 650S Coupé is true testament to the engineering precision pursued throughout the development of the second-generation Super Series.

A rear window lowers automatically when the RHT is opened, moving to the optimum position to minimize airflow intrusion into the cabin. The window is also independently controllable, allowing occupants to lower it when the roof is closed and invite the sound of the powertrain into the cabin. The fact that the buttresses at their highest point are 1in lower than those of a 650S Spider allows air to flow over the cabin, reducing turbulence and wind noise to a bare minimum.

Owners wanting to experience the open-air nature of the 720S Spider even with the roof closed can specify a carbon fibre-framed, glazed RHT option to allow even more light into the cabin if they so choose: the glass is electrochromic and can switch rapidly between a transparent or tinted state at the touch of a button. When the ignition is off, the glass reverts to its tinted setting, helping keep the cabin of the 720S Spider cool during hot days. The electrochromic technology has a memory function that recalls the previous setting selected when the vehicle is next started.

The interior is the same welcoming and luxurious supercar cabin enjoyed by 720S Coupé drivers. Opening a door – which is now a frameless design with a new door hinge system and re-positioned gas strut accommodate the RHT system - provides access to a truly sophisticated environment, with an extraordinary perception of space and the finest materials in evidence.

A centrally-mounted 8.0-inch high-resolution Central Infotainment Screen remains the primary hub for the vehicle’s functions. The interface displays audio, media, navigation, climate control and other convenience features, with all the key applications shown on a vertical carousel as well as being available via quick-access ‘hard’ keys below the screen.

The dual-zone climate control and air conditioning system has been recalibrated for the 720S Spider and is able to detect if the RHT position changes from raised to lowered or vice versa. The temperature and airflow is automatically adjusted, warming or cooling occupants according to the ambient settings already selected by increasing airflow into the cabin and moving more air to the footwell or upper cabin.

The active rear spoiler automatically activates to either decrease drag or increase downforce, acting as well as an airbrake to enhance vehicle balance under heavy braking. In its Spider application, the spoiler can rise at lower speeds, optimizing downforce and balance to ensure that performance and driver engagement is on par with the 720S Coupé. And while the rear spoiler is identical on both Coupé and Spider, the deployment mapping is bespoke to each body style, the aero settings differing depending on whether the Retractable Hard Top is raised or lowered and the vehicle electronics being automatically aware of which condition it is in.

McLaren’s Proactive Chassis Control II hydraulic suspension – already renowned for challenging convention by delivering the usually incompatible combination of precise body control and a compliant ride – is complemented by an electro-hydraulic steering system acknowledged for exceptionally pure precision and feedback. As with the Coupé, a Spider driver can choose between three Handling modes – Comfort, Sport, or Track – each focused on a different driving experience according to personal preference and conditions. The inherent benefits of carbon fibre over steel and aluminum deliver significant advantages to the 720S Spider. The immense torsional rigidity – especially important in a convertible – provides an incredibly stable platform, enhancing both ride and handling performance. event of a crash. Powertrain and suspension components are mounted on lightweight aluminum front and rear subframes that absorb energy loads.

The new Monocage II-S shares much of architecture – including the carbon fibre lower structure – with the Monocage II chassis of the McLaren 720S Coupé; given that the two body styles were envisaged from the outset of the second-generation Super Series program, this is to be expected. However, the engineering enhancements that see the 720S Spider retaining a carbon fibre upper structure that allows the true ‘roofless’ open-air exhilaration and thrills expected of a McLaren convertible - two potentially incompatible demands – take the Monocage design technology to a whole new level. . The carbon fibre lower structure – the ‘tub’ – is shared with the 720S Coupé and is an incredibly strong, stiff and safe passenger cell. This commonality means that the new Spider is equally optimized for everyday usability, with low sills that drop down dramatically where the occupants’ feet swing in and out of the luxurious cabin and a wide door opening making entering and leaving the car surprisingly easy.

In contrast to the MonoCell construction of the first-generation Super Series models, where the carbon fibre structure stopped below the glasshouse, the chassis of the second-generation Super Series models incorporates an upper structure – hence Mono ‘cage’. Compared to the 650S Spider, the tops of the A – or windscreen - pillars are 3.1in further forward. This feature is made possible by the dimensions and carbon fibre windscreen surround of the Monocage II-S, which allows a larger opening to the elements with the Retractable Hard Top stowed and aids occupants’ entry and exit from the cabin.

The upper structure of new Monocage II-S only differs significantly from the Coupé Monocage II rearwards of the windscreen surround, the exceptions being a new carbon fibre section in the header rail to accommodate a central latch system for the Retractable Hard Top and adjustments for the new seals of the frameless doors. Such is the strength of the carbon fibre construction that no additional strengthening is needed for the ultra-slim windscreen pillars of the Coupé , which are retained and deliver excellent visibility through the deep, broad windscreen as well as aiding airflow along the sides of the vehicle. Owners can specify the carbon fibre weave of the Monocage II-S visible if they choose.

The new rollover protection system (ROPS) is 15lb lighter than the steel component technology used in the 650S Spider, with fixed carbon fibre structural supports fully bonded and integrated into the chassis to also act as the primary anchor points for the roof system and seatbelts.

The remarkably stiffness and rigidity of carbon fibre means the rollover protection system is incredibly compact, allowing the design and engineering team to create incredibly slim tonneau buttresses to

surround them. This contributes to a sensation of exceptional space, while also reducing aerodynamic drag and undesirable NVH. The structural surface of the tonneau buttresses is finished in Dark Palladium as standard, but can be specified in Gloss Visual Carbon Fibre, exposing the beauty of the structural carbon fibre that is a true part of the Monocage II-S.

The one-piece Retractable Hard Top roof has a carbon fibre panel that forms part of the RHT system’s structure, meaning that when the roof is closed the new 720S Spider retains a complete carbon fibre upper structure. To allow additional light into the cabin, a glazed roof option with electrochromic glass able to change rapidly between tinted and transparent states at the touch of a button is available.

The Retractable Hard Top stows beneath the aluminum rear tonneau cover. To accommodate both the Retractable Hard Top and rear tonneau cover, the Monocage II-S features a new carbon fibre upper structure around the engine bay that has been engineered to sit as close as possible to the charge air coolers and intake plenum to maximize luggage space. In turn, this lowers the height of the rear tonneau cover. There is a slight incline of five degrees in the carbon fibre structure towards the rear of the car, which helps to draw heat out of the engine bay and cool the powertrain, exhaust manifold and catalysts.

Constructing the rollover protection system, the Retractable Hard Top and the rear upper structure from carbon fibre has removed mass from the highest section of the 720S Spider and further contributing positively to the dynamic balance.

The second-generation McLaren Super Series was engineered to be both a Coupé and Spider from the outset of the development program, allowing the open-roof version to minimize weight gain and maintain the same level of ground-breaking design and performance as the Coupé. The lightest dry weight of the Spider is just 2,937lb, comfortably class-leading and only 108lb more than the Coupé.

The Monocage II-S carbon fibre core of the new Spider provided McLaren’s design team with the perfect base of the same extreme strength and rigidity as the Coupé, despite the removal of the fixed roof. This meant that the unusually slim windscreen A-pillars could remain, while the aerodynamic requirements crucial for the cooling performance of the powertrain were equally unaffected and the excellent forward visibility of the 720S Coupé could also be retained, enabling superior driver confidence.

The new convertible appears almost sculpted by the air that flows over, under, around and through it, a product of the symbiotic relationship between McLaren’s designers and engineers, who work as one team focused on form going hand-in-hand with function. The seamless and organic forms that comprise the new Spider combine to maximize downforce, minimize drag, enhance powertrain cooling and optimize aerodynamic balance. Lightweight aluminum, carbon fibre and composite bodywork aerodynamically shrink-wraps around the bespoke carbon fibre structure to create a lean and taut form that is both breathtakingly beautiful and a highly technical, functional design, defined by innovation.

The radical thinking that saw McLaren redefine the cooling platform of the second-generation Super Series lead to the dramatic ‘eye sockets’ cut deep into the front fenders, channeling air into two low- temperature radiators (LTRs). The LTRs cool the seven-speed seamless-shift transmission and the charge air coolers, while the highly innovative front fender inlet position minimizes the impact on aerodynamics and vehicle drag.

As the ‘eye socket’ intakes direct cooling airflow into the LTRs of the new 720S Spider, the front splitter and contoured bonnet further dictate and control the airflow through, over, around and under the vehicle. Behind the front splitter, the underfloor aerodynamics have been revised to work in harmony with the new bodywork of the 720S Spider and the revised mappings of the full-width rear wing.

The 720S Spider maintains the same sculpted waistline as the 720S Coupé, with an apparent lack of side air intakes. Despite this, cooling performance improves by 15 percent in comparison to the 650S Spider

and is crucial in meeting the cooling requirements of the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Such advances are the result of the total holistic approach that has seen both the both technical design and studio design pursue, as one, every possible innovation. The lower cooling vents behind the doors, for example, are the product of learnings gained from ensuring maximum radiator efficiency in the limited- edition McLaren 675LT.

The uninterrupted flow of cooling air from over the bonnet and around the sleek windscreen A-pillars passes along the side windows and then both under the new glazed flying buttresses and – inspired by a McLaren P1™ technology – down into the deep channel within the door to feed the high-temperature radiators (HTRs) that cool the 710bhp V8 powertrain.

Equally as innovative as the ‘eye socket’ intakes are the double-skinned dihedral doors that on first sight appear to have removed side intakes from the car. Instead, building on lessons learnt with the McLaren P1™, fast-moving airflow is driven down into intakes set within the ‘double skin’ doors. Despite the increased cooling requirements of the new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine in comparison to the previous-generation 650S Spider, cooling performance is achieved without the need to increase radiator dimensions or mass.

The removal of the fixed roof in creation of the Spider variant necessitated a revised gas strut position and new door hinge system, but this solution was designed into the second-generation Super Series from program outset. The only visible exterior differences between the front half of a 720S Spider with the roof raised and the Coupé is a longer front fender, shorter door and frameless window surround.

The use of carbon fibre in the creation of the new powered Retractable Hard Top not only maintains the aerodynamic purity of the 720S Coupé’s distinctive silhouette, but endows the 720S Spider with a full carbon fibre upper structure when the roof is closed. The Retractable Hard Top features an integrated panel and frame in carbon fibre. To bring additional light into the cabin, the Retractable Hard Top is available with a glazed roof option featuring electrochromic glass.

With the roof open, the eye is drawn to the new tonneau buttresses and unique glazed flying buttresses. The tonneau buttresses sit directly behind the driver and passenger, and flow gracefully down into the ‘superformed’ aluminum rear tonneau cover. They are separated by a rear window that, when the Retractable Hard Top is opened, lowers automatically to the optimum position to minimize airflow intrusion into the cabin. The rear window may also be independently controlled, so the occupants can lower the screen when the roof is in place, inviting the sound of the 710bhp powertrain into the cabin.

The tonneau buttresses shroud a new rollover protection system that is integrated into the Monocage II- S and carbon fibre has once again been key in their creation. Light, strong and stiff, the fixed structural supports of the rollover protection system are incredibly compact, allowing for the two tightly packaged tonneau buttresses that minimize intrusions both into the airflow and rearward visibility.

Further aiding the 360-degree visibility – which is central to the philosophy of the second-generation Super Series – are the innovative new glazed flying buttresses. Stretching back across the rear deck of the 720S Spider and accentuating the stunning design, the leading edge features an aerodynamic carrier to guide airflow, before dramatically tapering off to expose the darkened glazing. During the test and development phase of the 720S Spider, advancements made by the design and engineering team led to the thickness of the glass being reduced from an initial 0.2in (3.85mm), to just 0.1in (3.15mm). This saved an additional 1.1lb, from a crucial position above the center of gravity.

Fast moving, high-energy air coming from the sides of 720S Spider is guided through the aerodynamically sculpted shape of the glazed flying buttresses, creating a high-pressure zone over the rear tonneau cover and engine bay to reduce rear axle lift. Thanks to the innovative glazed solution, rearward visibility is not impeded, enhancing daily usability and driver confidence.

The flow of air through the buttresses also further serves to evacuate heat from the engine bay via the Rear Aero Bridge. First seen on the McLaren 720S Coupé, this sits on the muscular shoulders of the 720S Spider and consists of a trio of gill-like vents; one ahead of each glazed flying buttress, one located at the base of each, and one just aft of each on the rear deck. The positioning is identical to that of the 720S Coupé, but the middle vent is hidden under the base of the buttress, further contributing to the elegance of the design.

Nestled between the glazed flying buttresses is the new full-length rear tonneau cover, beneath which the one-piece Retractable Hard Top can be stowed. The top of the V8 powertrain is some 4in lower in comparison to the first-generation of McLaren Super Series models. Together with the slim one-piece RHT, this reduction in height both improves rearward visibility and increases luggage stowage space. The rear tonneau, contoured to include a central high-mounted stop light and finished in Dark Palladium, is optionally available in Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre from McLaren Special Operations (MSO).

The twin-turbocharged V8 powertrain is visible through a laser-cut aluminum mesh, and the technical detailing of the engine bay is enhanced by a revised ambient lighting package that highlights the aluminum plenum. Further augmenting the aerodynamics, the rear of the new 720S Spider is 5.7in lower

overall than a 650S Spider, the drag-reducing, aggressive design enabled by a lowered radiator header tank and rearward repositioning of the structural airboxes,

The distinctive rear of the 720S Spider is characterized not only by the full width, active rear spoiler, but also the high-mounted twin exhaust system, the positioning of which ensures the exhausts are clear of the rear diffuser. Ultra-slim rear LED taillights also reduce interruptions to airflow as hot air is vented from the engine bay through the fine mesh between the full-width rear wing and rear bumper.

Access into the luxuriously appointed cabin of the new 720S Spider is via McLaren’s trademark dihedral doors, but the theatre of owning a Super Series convertible begins before that. Unlocking the 720S Spider engages a ‘Welcome Sequence’ that sees the engine bay bathed in an evocative red light, highlighting the aluminum intake plenum atop the engine. The LED indicators sweep through a distinctive start-up sequence and the doors mirrors unfold as the courtesy lighting gently illuminates.

Opening the dihedral door triggers a second sequence of events. The pioneering Folding Driver Display deploys and the operating system comes to life for both this and the high-resolution 8.0-inch central touchscreen. With delicate ambient lighting, an extraordinary perception of space, and only the finest materials, the cabin of the new 720S Spider is a sophisticated environment that is the most welcoming and luxurious in the supercar sector.

Entry into the cabin is significantly improved over the first-generation Super Series, demonstrating the practicality of the 720S Spider. The exquisite dihedral doors hinge dramatically forwards and upwards, and require 3.5in less space per side than is needed to fully open the doors of a 650S Spider. Equally, the opening angle of the stunning single-hinged doors is enhanced, ensuring a generously wide aperture for occupants entering or leaving the cabin. This increases accessibility when parked in tight spaces, the doors opening to a height of only 6.4ft high, an important factor in underground parking.

Revised from the 720S Coupé to account for the removal of the fixed roof, the aluminum construction of the dihedral doors is light and stiff, enabling the creation of their extraordinary shape. The doors feature an enhanced soft-close function, and a new seal path in conjunction with the new frameless glass, delivers outstanding NVH characteristics. Once open, the dihedral doors reveal that the sills of the 720S Spider drop down dramatically where the occupants’ feet swing in and out of the luxurious cabin. All are clear indications of McLaren’s fastidious determination to make the new 720S Spider as easy to live with as it is dynamically thrilling.

The cabin of the 720S Spider carries the flowing forms of the exterior inside, creating a welcoming environment of dynamic shaping and visual lightness that sits perfectly with McLaren’s technical sophistication. From the highest quality leathers of the dashboard to the delicate stitching on the seats, every surface is thoughtfully trimmed and textured with the finest materials. The 720S Spider also features two unique switches, located between the driver and passenger, that separately control the new Retractable Hard Top (RHT) and the rear window glass.

The new one-piece RHT system designed and engineered for the new generation of Super Series convertible not only looks incredibly integrated and neat, more importantly it improves refinement and interior occupant space due to the lack of a central seal running side-to-side across the roof panel. The decibel volume inside the cabin is reduced, headroom is increased and there are further weight and simplicity benefits. The roof is an integrated carbon fibre panel and structure with a foam core, the panel forming part of the RHT structure. The one-piece RHT has been engineered with a single central latch system, rather than the twin-latch set-up from the first-generation Super Series. With the latch system centralized above the rear-view mirror – rather than outboard atop each A-pillar – the 720S Spider retains the same ultra-slim A-pillars and excellent visibility as the 720S Coupé.

The tonneau buttresses are made possible by the compact design of both the carbon fibre rollover protection system and the all-new RHT folding mechanism. A further benefit of such tight packaging is the preservation the Rear Aero Bridge seen on the Coupé – a key aerodynamic component in the powertrain cooling of the second-generation Super Series.

Replacing the hydraulic pump used to operate the folding mechanism of the first-generation Super Series Spider roof with electric motors to actuate the system benefits both refinement and speed of operation. Two motors move the roof panel; two raise and lower the rear tonneau cover; two control the aero-covers at the leading edge of the tonneau buttresses when the roof is open and one the RHT latching mechanism. An eighth motor controls the rear window.

The e-motors work in parallel, optimizing the cycle time, rather than in the series set-up of a hydraulic pump. So, as soon as the tonneau cover has cleared space for the roof, the RHT begins to unfold, rather than waiting for a switch in a hydraulic system to operate. Initial simulations foresaw a reduction from the 17-second cycle time needed on the 650S Spider, to less than 15 seconds – but optimization of the all-new RHT system during the test and development phase reduced this to just 11 seconds. The e- motors, together with the strength and lightness of the carbon fibre RHT, have also enable the maximum vehicle speed at which the roof can be operated increase from the 18mph of the 650S Spider, to 31mph.

The new retractable roof system of the 720S Spider is truly class-leading. One of the quietest and quickest powered convertible roof mechanisms in the world, with noise levels during operation half that of a 650S Spider roof, the new McLaren Retractable Hard Top is subject to three worldwide patents.

In addition to the discreet electric actuation of the new RHT, McLaren engineers worked tirelessly across all the sources of unwanted NVH to ensure the 720S Spider offers peerless refinement. From the exterior aerodynamics to the optimized seal path of the new dihedral doors, every possible step has been taken to enhance the driving environment. When the RHT is stowed, the rear window automatically moves to the optimum setting to minimize buffeting and even the dynamic flaps that fold out to sit on top of the leading edge of the tonneau buttresses when the RHT is stowed, have been meticulously engineered to sit lower, with a more aerodynamic cowling, to better connect the airflow coming over the windscreen with that passing across the rear deck and limit disturbances in the cabin.

To further enhance the driving experience of the 720S Spider, the sound of the engine inside the car has been improved by cutting out the noises that drivers don’t want to hear, whilst permitting those that they do want to hear – for example the rear window can be lowered with the roof up or down to allow more sound into the cabin. To bring additional light into the cabin with the roof raised, the Retractable Hard Top is available with a glazed roof option featuring electrochromic glass, offering the feel of an open-air environment, even with the roof closed. Utilizing technology first showcased by McLaren Special Operations on the 570GT, the electrochromic glass has been further optimized for the 720S

Spider, with McLaren’s designers and engineers pushing the technology to its limits, with tolerances levels of less than 1mm allowing the entire roof panel to be constructed from electrochromic glass.

The two-stage system has a darkened, tinted setting, which still allows some light into the cabin. At the touch of button, however, an electrical charge passes through the panel and realigns the particles in the glass, turning it transparent and flooding the interior with light as if the roof was open and stowed. The result is a significantly enhanced cabin experience, and an incredible sense of openness, whatever the climate or season. When the ignition is off, the electrochromic glass reverts to its tinted setting, ensuring the cabin of the 720S Spider remains cool during hot days.

The one-piece RHT roof necessitates a longer rear tonneau cover, which as standard is made from ‘superformed’ aluminum. The forming process is at the limit of what is technically possible, necessary to achieve the beautiful shape that ‘shrinkwraps’ over the vehicle’s hard points. The tonneau is also optionally available as an MSO feature in Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre.

The elongated rear tonneau cover creates a more usable luggage area, in addition to the 5.3 cubic feet of stowage space under the front bonnet. The tonneau operates automatically when the roof is raised or lowered but can also be independently opened or closed via a button on the driver’s door, allowing access to the luggage space when the roof is in the up position. Two cubic feet of additional luggage space is available when the roof is raised.

The heart of the 720S Spider is a powertrain that takes the performance of a McLaren convertible to new heights. The new 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 710bhp and 568lb ft of torque, which in combination with a class-leading weight underpinned by the pioneering carbon fibre construction of the Monocage II-S, gives the McLaren 720S Spider an exhilarating power-to-weight ratio of 533bhp-per-ton at lightest dry weight.

Acceleration is nothing short of phenomenal, with a launch control function ensuring that 0-60mph can be reached in only 2.8 seconds. 0-124mph is achieved in a scant 7.9 seconds – just 0.1 second slower than the lighter Coupé. The standing quarter mile sprint is dispatched in 10.4 seconds, and the 720S Spider has a maximum speed of 212mph. With its roof lowered, the top speed is 202mph.

These levels of performance, which are notably ahead of the 650S Spider, are possible because despite a capacity increase of only 195cc over the 3.8-liter engine in the first-generation Super Series, the power and torque enhancements of 69bhp and 68lb ft respectively in the 4.0-liter M840T engine are nothing short of remarkable. Every element of the engine was analyzed and refined by engineers at the McLaren Technology Centre (MTC) to maximize power, sharpen engine responsiveness, and increase fuel efficiency. Compared to the 3.8-liter engine, 41% of parts are all-new. The enlarged displacement of was achieved by increasing the stroke by 3.6mm, but lighter pistons result in a reduction of the reciprocating masses of the engine, delivering a quicker throttle response. The weight of the connecting rods was also reduced and the flat-plane crankshaft is stiffer but lighter, evidence of the determination to increase responsiveness as well as outright power.

A key feature of the M840T engine is the ultra-low inertia, twin-scroll turbochargers. The lightweight turbines in the turbochargers are lighter and capable of spinning at 160,000rpm, making the turbocharger ‘spool up’ more rapidly. This improves engine response under acceleration by reducing ‘lag’ – as well as producing more power. Furthermore, the new wastegates and dump valve are electronically controlled to adapt to the powertrain’s requirements, actively managing the build-up of power and torque from low rpm and improving fuel consumption and reducing emissions. The M840T engine also features race-inspired dry sump lubrication.

The fuel system of the 720S Spider incorporates Advanced Port Fuel Injection. This system – developed originally for the McLaren P1™ and used in the 720S Coupé – features double the number of fuel injectors of the first-generation Super Series (up from 8 to 16) for more precise fuel control. The twin- injector solution improves combustion and lower emissions while increasing the power output.

Engine response – both on- and off the throttle – has been calibrated to deliver the optimum blend of immediate reaction and progressive control, ensuring absolute driver involvement. Under full acceleration, the power delivery builds relentlessly through the rev range, encouraging the driver to hold each successive gear to over 8,000rpm.

Matching the feeling of the powertrain is its exhilarating sound, enhanced further when the rear window is lowered, or when the Retractable Hard Top is stowed completely. The twin-exit stainless steel system delivers a scintillating supercar soundtrack that is clean and crisp, and rises with engine rpm and engine load to deliver a thrilling crescendo.

The entire exhaust – from the exhaust ports down to the exit of the exhaust pipes – has been honed to maximize performance and sound quality. The 720S features an equal length system that provides a sophisticated balance of harmonics, as well as consistent, uniform back pressure. An optional sports exhaust system further enhances the experience, with an even louder and more emotive soundtrack while still retaining excellent sound quality and clarity.

A dual-clutch, seamless-shift seven-speed gearbox delivers power from the mid-mounted engine to the rear wheels. The 720S Spider can either shift between the seven gear ratios automatically, or the gear shifts paddles – mounted behind the steering wheel – can be used to change gear in this vehicle setting. A full manual gearchange strategy can be selected via a button on the Active Dynamics Panel, should the driver wish.

McLaren’s bespoke transmission software allows the character of the twin-turbo V8 and the dual-clutch gearbox to be tailored using the Active Dynamics Panel. There is a choice of Comfort, Sport and Track modes for the Powertrain, enabling the driver to select a luxurious, comfortable cruise or a high- performance exhilarating drive dependent upon their mood and the driving conditions. This choice widens the breadth of ability to 720S Spider, as a customer can revise these settings in Comfort mode for more relaxed shifts to match a gentler driving style, or focus them further in Sport or Track.

Faster gearshifts are achieved by using control strategies adopted from Formula One, a momentary cut of the ignition spark during a gearshift in Sport mode improves gear change times, especially on the downshift. The downshift speeds are further enhanced by the low inertia of the powertrain. In Track mode, enhanced gearshift performance is achieved through McLaren’s Inertia Push technology. It ensures uninterrupted acceleration by employing the built-up kinetic energy of the flywheel to deliver an impulse of torque as the next forward gear is engaged.

The substantial increase in power of the M840T engine necessitate higher levels of powertrain cooling. McLaren engineers developed a highly optimized cooling system with redesigned cylinder head water jackets and water channels that keep the engine at the optimum operating temperature – and contribute massively to the increased power output of the engine. The cooling system is based around four radiators, with two low-temperature radiators (LTRs) cooling the transmission and the charge air for the turbochargers, while the high-temperature radiators (HTRs) cool the powertrain.

The top of the V8 engine is 4in lower in the 720S Spider than in the 650S Spider. This lowers the center of gravity of the car, benefitting dynamic balance, as well as creating more luggage space which improves the practicality of the vehicle. Key to this advancement was reducing the height of the intake plenum; cast in lightweight aluminum and bearing the McLaren ‘Speedmark’ logo, it is visible through a new laser-cut aluminum mesh cover and illuminated on vehicle unlocking to herald the unrivalled driver exhilaration that is a core characteristic of the 720S Spider.

The carbon fibre core of the McLaren 720S is one that – unlike most metal structures – is neither weakened by the removal of the roof nor requires attentional strengthening. Without much of the

additional weight often associated with convertible models and with immense rigidity from its Monocage II-S, McLaren has engineered the 720S Spider to have the same impressive breadth of dynamic capabilities as the 720S Coupé – and deliver the same incredible driving experience.

The light base weight of the 720S Spider – at as low as 2,937lb, the McLaren is 194lb less than the competitor closest to it – intensifies acceleration, braking and directional changes, making it feel as if there is no inertia, rather a vehicle that responds instantly to every input from the driver’s hands and feet. Proactive Chassis Control II (PCC II) suspension – which made its debut on the 720S Coupé – ensures a staggering breadth of ability across all road surfaces; the 720S Spider has remarkable body control for sharp handling yet also a supple, compliant ride, delivering a true ‘no compromise’ driving experience.

The new generation of McLaren’s active chassis system features hydraulically-interlinked continuously variable dampers at each corner and removes the need for conventional anti-roll bars, using instead hydraulic anti-roll bars that have a very high roll stiffness but a low warp stiffness – something that would not be possible with a mechanical system. The low warp stiffness limits disturbances to the body – absorbing single wheel inputs like a pothole on a less than perfect road, for example – while the high roll stiffness stabilizes the vehicle.

The big leap forward over the suspension system used on the first-generation Super Series is in the control strategy. Based on Optimal Control Theory, the chassis software is radically new and has its basis in advanced mathematical research initiated by McLaren at the University of Cambridge, England. Advanced algorithms assess inputs from crucial vehicle parameters, with data from sensors – including four wheel accelerometers, two pressure sensors per damper, and multiple body sensors – analyzed and reacted to in a mere two milliseconds to create the perfect damping response.

PCC II is better able interpret and read the road, so a suitable reaction can be defined and implemented. The firmness of the damping is thus proactively regulated to stabilize the vehicle before the body reacts to the road surface, rather than afterwards. The aim is to ensure that the contact patch of all four tires remains more consistently in touch with the road surface, significantly increasing grip. As cornering, acceleration, braking and aerodynamic forces constantly alter and the road surface continually changes, so Proactive Chassis Control II can quickly compute the perfect response. Damping characteristics have been optimized and realigned to account for the different aerodynamic signatures with the Retractable Hard Top up or down, as well as the small weight increase over the 720S Coupé.

Further enhancing PCC II and the abilities of the 720S Spider, the lightweight suspension uprights and the double wishbones first seen on the 720S Coupé reduce unsprung mass by 35lb over the 650S

Spider, for incredibly responsive handling and heightened dynamic performance. The new geometry maximizes grip, with the enhanced rear suspension improving toe compliance on the rear axle. It benefits braking stability and works in conjunction with airbrake functionality of the active rear spoiler.

The front axle geometry optimizes driver feedback with enhanced steering feel, in addition to the electro-hydraulic assistance favored by McLaren. The detailed textures and clarity it offers, especially in comparison to electrical power assistance, is unrivalled. There is one steering software ‘map’ in all Handling modes, but drivers will feel an intensifying level of feedback response as both the hydraulic anti-roll bars and dampers increase chassis stiffness through the Sport and Track modes.

The full-width rear wing – with both a drag-reduction system and airbrake functionality – is physically identical to that on the 720S Coupé. It automatically activates to either decrease drag or increase downforce, or act as an airbrake to enhance vehicle balance under heavy braking. The engine air intakes on the top of the rear fenders are close to the rear wing, and when the wing deploys, the resulting aerodynamic downwash further benefits powertrain performance.

The deployment scenarios for full-width rear wing have though been revised for the 720S Spider. To account for the revised convertible bodywork the wing can rise at lower speeds to achieve optimal downforce and vehicle balance, thereby ensuring performance and engagement is on par with the 720 Coupé. There are bespoke aero settings for the full-width rear wing both with the Retractable Hard Top both in place and for when the RHT is lowered and stored beneath the rear tonneau, maintaining optimal vehicle aero balance.

The wing, which is hydraulically actuated, has three main operational positions:

. Driver Downforce is engaged when the Aero button is pushed in the cabin. This delivers the necessary downforce and balance to guarantee optimal performance during cornering and is speed dependent. With the roof closed, active downforce varies between 60 and 75 percent. With the roof open the range is 78 to 90 percent.

. DRS (between 0 and 30 per cent wing deployment, dependent on speed) automatically delivers drag reduction when accelerating in a straight line and up to the maximum vehicle speed

. High Speed Braking (100 percent airbrake deployment in less than 0.5sec) fully deploys the wing, shifting the aerodynamic balance rearward by 20 percent to improve high-speed braking stability and reduce overall braking distances

The full-width rear wing of the new 720S Spider delivers up to 30 percent more downforce than the wing of a 650S Spider, and works in harmony with a rear diffuser that sweeps up aggressively from the completely flat underfloor. Aerodynamic efficiency – the ratio between downforce and drag – is increased by more than 30 percent in comparison with the 650S and the resulting supercar is superbly balanced, giving the driver the confidence to push harder towards both their limits and that of the new McLaren 720S Spider.

According to personal preference or conditions, a 720S Spider driver can choose between three Handling modes – Comfort, Sport, and Track – all accessed through the Active Dynamics Panel located within the center console. Each mode delivers a specific driving experience; in Comfort mode, this manifests itself as a level of suspension compliance and comfort like no other supercar, the ‘magic carpet’ ride expected from a McLaren Super Series – and superior even to the first-generation Super Series.

Sport mode prioritizes a dynamic handling balance with agility and control that showcases the true potential of the 720S Spider on public roads. With Track, outright cornering grip and performance are at the forefront, to set stunning lap times not achievable without the system. Crucially for the driver, whatever the selection, the only sensation is an instantaneous dynamic response to their inputs. Therefore, roof up or down, cruising or carving along a favorite road, the 720S Spider - like its fixed roof sibling - sets new dynamic benchmarks in the supercar segment, with the further benefit of a truly thrilling open-top driving experience.

McLaren Variable Drift Control, or VDC, was introduced on the 720S Coupé and allows a driver to adjust the intervention level of the traction control system independently of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) setting. The driver can easily make changes to the VDC to suit their preferences using a slider control on the Central Infotainment Screen. This adjustability allows the driver to hone their car control skills, over time moving from the stage where the car’s systems are intervening regularly to a stage where they are not intervening at all. VDC offers a more enjoyable and engaging experience, unlocking new levels of driving freedom and excitement. On the 720S Spider, the VDC has been re-engineered to account for the revised weight distribution and center of gravity.

Shared with the McLaren 720S Coupé, the 720S Spider feature a new design of Pirelli P ZERO™ tire. Its focus is on road usage, with the optimum balance of performance, grip, handling and comfort for use in a wide range of road conditions. Both a track-focused Pirelli P ZERO™ Corsa tire, and Pirelli Sottozero™ winter tire that balances performance, safety and respect for the environment, are available from McLaren retailers. The Pirelli tires for the McLaren 720S Spider have been specially developed in close

co-operation between McLaren Automotive and its technical partner to ensured they always offer superb driver feedback and high levels of grip and braking performance.

The Pirelli P ZERO™ tires, the reduced mass versus the 650S Spider, the lower center of gravity and enhanced aero balance all contribute to the deceleration performance of the 720 Spider. Braking from 62mph to standstill is achieved in just 98ft, while it takes only 4.6 seconds (covering a distance of 400ft) to reach a stop from 124mph).

Vehicle weight – and unsprung weight – is reduced by carbon ceramic discs and aluminum calipers. Measuring 15.4in diameter on the front axle and 15in at the rear axle, together with lighter and stiffer powerful six-piston and four-piston calipers respectively, account for a 4.4lb reduction over the first- generation Super Series. The unsprung weight can be reduced further – by up to 30.6lb – with the option of Lightweight and Super-Lightweight forged alloy wheels, including a new 10-spoke Lightweight forged wheel specially developed for the 720S Spider.

The latest version of McLaren Track Telemetry is an option on 720S Spider. Designed and developed to capture the vehicle’s performance on track, the system measures throttle angle and lateral/longitudinal G-force in addition to the timing and speed measurement functionality seen on the first-generation Super Series. Real-time information is available on the Central Infotainment Screen, or downloaded to an external medium for detailed review after driving.

McLaren Track Telemetry is also available with three cameras, with a camera located in the front bumper and a camera in the rear bumper. A third, forward-facing camera is repositioned from the roof lining in the 720S Coupé, to a location between the seats on the rear bulkhead for the 720S Spider. If the three cameras are specified, customers can review the camera footage together with all the telemetry data for even more in-depth analysis of their driving.

The new McLaren 720S Spider features Static Adaptive Headlights, a pioneering technology seen on both the 720S Coupé and the latest Ultimate Series, the McLaren Senna. The system is fully digital, and utilizes an array of variable-intensity LED lights to optimize headlight performance. By varying the directional light intensity based on steering input, the road ahead, corner apexes and surrounding areas remain illuminated while turning.

Operating from standstill through to the maximum vehicle speed of the 720S Spider, the Static Adaptive Headlight technology gives the driver better visibility through corners, increasing comfort and safety, as well improving straight-ahead long-range visibility by automatically raising the beam pattern by half a

degree. This occurs whether on dipped or main beam when the vehicle speed reaches 68mph, further focusing the driver’s attention further on the road ahead.

The headlights feature 21 LEDs apiece, with four LEDs providing the main beam, five the dipped beam, and the remaining 12 utilized for the pioneering Static Adaptive functionality. The use of varying intensity LEDs also removes the need for mechanical motors, thus reducing weight – crucially, outside of the wheelbase. The separation of the headlights from the daytime running lights and sequential-turn LED indicators allows the smaller headlight lens to be positioned more vertically, improving optical performance.

The exterior color palette available as standard for the 720S Spider comprises 23 colors, including three new for this car: Belize Blue, Aztec Gold and Supernova Silver, the last of these a Heritage color that was available on the McLaren 12C and has been reintroduced for the new Spider. Owners wanting to explore hues beyond the standard offering can again turn to McLaren Special Operations (MSO) for an almost infinite range of colors

Many of the aerodynamic exterior parts that are crucial for guiding airflow and venting heat – including the front splitter, front intake, bonnet vents and rear diffuser – are finished in Dark Palladium, but are optionally available in Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre. MSO offers additional components in Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre through its MSO Defined range, including the bonnet, rear tonneau cover and full- width rear wing, to complement or contrast the chosen exterior paint.

The beautiful materials used throughout the interior of the 720S Spider highlight the high level of quality across the vehicle. Not only are the leathers, Alcantara® and other materials remarkable, but the comfort and convenience characteristics are particularly noteworthy. All the controls in the cabin of the 720S Spider are as precisely engineered and tactile as they are visually appealing. Even the smallest details have been given forensic attention, with delicately crafted machined switchgear used extensively throughout the cabin, and unique stitching patterns developed specifically for second-

generation Super Series featuring on the leather. An air of sophisticated luxury is evident throughout the interior, ensuring the driver enjoys the ambience and indulgence of the cabin environment as much as they do the thrilling driving experience.

The new 720S Spider is available in three grades of specification, with the Performance and Luxury models extending above the standard 720S model to create cars with their own character and ‘feel’. The 720S Spider Luxury, for instance, is the perfect long-distance cruiser, with power-adjust heated memory sports seats for both the driver and passenger and a meticulously appointed ‘By McLaren’ interior featuring the finest Nappa leather hides. By contrast, the 720S Spider Performance specification features a ‘By McLaren’ interior trimmed predominantly in tactile, lightweight Alcantara®, the focused nature of this specification accentuated inside and out with carbon fibre.

Such meticulous detail works in unison with the aim to create an increased feeling of interior space, a vision enacted by carrying all the surfaces outwards as far as possible to maximize cabin volume. Key controls such as the Active Dynamics Panel and the Drive/Neutral/Reverse switches are close to the driver’s field of view, reducing distraction while driving. Media controls, meanwhile, have been moved further away from the steering wheel to maintain a clean aspect to the dashboard, with priority given to those controls more essential while driving.

The driver and their passenger sit as standard in sports seats that have not only been developed to deliver the perfect amount of lateral support, but at the same time supreme comfort for cross- continental trips. Owners can choose to replace the standard leather-wrapped sports steering wheel with color-matched, carbon fibre enhanced or Alcantara® options – but the wheel always remains free of buttons and switches, a McLaren trademark.

A centrally-mounted 8.0-inch high-resolution Central Infotainment Screen is the primary hub for vehicle convenience, comfort and connectivity functions. The interface displays audio, media, navigation and other convenience features – such as mood lighting color – with rich, crisp graphics. All key applications are displayed on a vertical carousel, as well via several dedicated quick-access ‘hard’ keys below the screen. For optimum usability, the climate control function remains fixed to the bottom of the screen.

Directly ahead of the driver is an upright, high-definition TFT panel, the highly innovative Folding Driver Display. In Full Display Mode, this presents the required array of information, from turn-by-turn navigation, through the temperature of vital fluids, to a digital rev counter. There are three different layouts and color variations depending on whether the car is being driven in Comfort, Sport, or Track modes. Driver Interface – an advanced, integrated new way of sharing information with the driver. It is designed to be immediately familiar to McLaren owners, but runs on an entirely new system architecture first introduced on the McLaren 720S Coupé.

At the touch of a button – conveniently located next to the steering wheel – the driver can alternate between Full Display Mode and Slim Display Mode. When the Active Dynamics Panel is activated, the display defaults to Full Display Mode when in Comfort mode and Slim Display Mode when in Track mode. The customer can specify if the display defaults to Full Display Mode or Slim Display Mode when in Sport mode. By only displaying critical information in the Slim Display Mode (rev range, speed and selected gear) the driver’s already excellent forward visibility is further enhanced and the dashboard is given an even cleaner appearance. Such a feature is in keeping with the fluid, uncluttered interior design and deliver a unique, futuristic experience.

The 720S Coupé marked the first time McLaren and premium audio specialist Bowers & Wilkins had collaborated on an audio system for the McLaren Super Series. The cooperation has now been extended to the new 720S Spider, with a world-class 12-speaker audio that was developed as an integral part of the cabin architecture. This is because the performance of a sound system depends far more on the quality of the drive units’ design and integration into the structure of the car than it does on the number of speakers. As such, the speakers are placed in acoustically beneficial locations and utilize high- performance materials to account for the unique cabin volume of the 720S Spider, both with the Retractable Hard Top up and down.

The ground-breaking system for the second-generation Super Series delivers pure, engaging sound through the implementation of key Bowers & Wilkins’ acoustic technologies, including the first automotive application of Double Dome tweeters. Performance is maximized and unadulterated sound – this time not from the exhaust system – takes the driving experience to completely new heights.

The optional Bowers & Wilkins 12-speaker audio system on the 720S Spider comprises 2 x 7.9in carbon fibre bass woofers in the dihedral doors; 4x 3.9in Kevlar mid-range drivers; 1x 3.1in carbon fibre central mid-range driver and 5x 1in aluminum Double Dome tweeters.

The 720S Spider is also available with a suite of comfort and convenience features including parking sensors and either a high-definition reversing camera or an enhanced 360-degree park assist. This highly accurate system includes one front, one rear and two side-mounted (in the door mirrors) HD cameras that provide a ‘bird’s-eye’ view in combination with four front and four rear parking sensors to provide a comprehensive image of the vehicle’s surroundings. The optional vehicle lift system raises the

nose of the vehicle over speed bumps over when entering or exiting underground car parks. Homelink®, which debuted on the McLaren 720S Coupé, is also available on the 720S Spider and allows for the remote opening of up to three electric garage doors or house gates.

Normal service intervals for the new 720S Spider are one year or 12,400miles, whichever occurs first. The 720S Spider is covered by McLaren’s Vehicle Warranty, which covers the vehicle for three years from purchase without mileage limitation. Paint surface is warranted for three years, visible cosmetic corrosion for five years, and perforation corrosion of the vehicle body for 10 years.

The 720S Spider is also eligible to be covered by the McLaren Extended Warranty. Available from time of first purchase in 12- or 24- month periods until the vehicle is 10 years old, the warranty makes it possible to cover a McLaren 720S Spider for up to 12 years.

Orders are now being accepted for the 720S Spider, with a starting MSRP of $315,000 (US).
