18 Specifications Overview

. When creating the interior and exterior variants of 720S, designers have invested a significant amount of time to make it easier for customers to find their perfect specification. The aim is to remove some of the complexity that made choosing a 650S difficult and reduce the number of steps the customer needs to take to find the 720S specification of their choice.

. In order to achieve this, three specifications of 720S have been created:

. 720S . 720S Performance . 720S Luxury

. These three specifications focus upon those options that work best together to create a vehicle with the feel that the customer wants, whether that be the perfect long distance cruiser or the ultimate track weapon.

. The vast majority of equipment options available on the 720S are available in all three specifications, and the performance of the 720S remains the same irrespective of which specification the customer chooses.

26 3. The Long Story

27 Exterior - Design

The foundations for the exterior design of the 720S are sophisticated, Our iconic dihedral doors which add drama to the car, also facilitate seamless and organic forms which appear to have been sculpted by the ingress, egress and access to the storage area in the back by cutting air flowing around it. Representing a huge progression the design away part of the roof like on the original McLaren F1. language, this car breaks away from tradition but keeps the inherent McLaren DNA. Moving rearwards, the car’s bodyside features heavily sculpted surfaces inspired by McLaren’s formula one cars, which improve air flow with their Central to the car’s philosophy was 360°visibility, enabling superior driver clean, fluid form. The means by which air flows over the car builds on the confidence. Never before has this level of visibility been seen in the innovative philosophy from P1, but does so in a more sophisticated Supercar segment and it was achieved through our advanced composite fashion. Fast flowing air is guided around the a-pillars into the Rear Air structure allowing glazed C-pillars and slimmer A-pillars. The teardrop Intakes. cabin serves not only as a proportional statement, but also an aerodynamic function, blending seamlessly with the fluid lines of the The rear of the car is accentuated by powerful and muscular rear surrounding bodywork. haunches which convey the vehicle’s strength while blending in with the fully integrated rear spoiler which continues the clean yet dynamic The customer benefits from the close relationship between our engineers surface language. and designers, who have produced a car with technical sophistication where form goes hand in hand with function. In creating 720S, both The 720S captures the essence of McLaren’s progressive and modern teams embodied the McLaren philosophy of ‘beautiful products that tell design language, while maintaining our passion for beautiful simplicity. the visual story of their function’. For instance, the headlights that adorn the front of the car, while aesthetically evocative, serve to bring new identity to the super series with integrated air intakes flowing around the lights and into the radiators.

28 Exterior - Carbon Fibre Monocage II

Description Options Unique in segment, the Carbon Fibre Monocage II features a lower Visible Carbon Fibre Monocage II leaves the A-pillar (interior/exterior), structure and an upper structure made of carbon fibre, creating a Door Opening Ring, Rear Upper Structure (B/C/D pillars) and Wheel lightweight and extremely strong cage around which the car is built. Arch Liner in Bare Carbon Fibre to show off the incredible structure of Monocage II. Revealing the materials from which the car is made reflects Customer Benefits McLaren’s authenticity of construction. The Monocage II is a hugely rigid yet ultra-lightweight chassis which weighs 18kg less than its predecessor due to the introduction of the carbon fibre upper structure. By saving weight in the upper structure, the centre of gravity has also been lowered.

Building the upper structure from carbon fibre means that the A, B and C- pillars can be much slimmer, giving the driver better all-round visibility on the road and the track, making the car more useable every day. In addition, the space created by the thinner carbon fibre pillars means more glass can be installed in the rear of the car, creating a unique look while allowing more light into the cabin.

The strength of the Carbon Fibre in the roof also allows features such as the stunning Dihedral Doors to be implemented.

29 Exterior - Dihedral doors

Description . The stunning Twin-hinged Dihedral Doors of the 720S are inspired by the legendary McLaren F1. They are unique in the Hypercar segment and integral to the car’s groundbreaking style.

Customer Benefits . Incorporating part of the roof into the door (known as the Exterior Door Upper) makes getting in and out of the car much easier. Creating a system in which doors open almost over the car rather than away from it aids everyday use by enabling the car to fit more easily into narrow parking spaces. The door opening width on both sides of the car is 15cm less than 650S and 20cm less than 570S, again demonstrating the practicality of the vehicle.

. Aluminium construction makes the doors light and stiff, allowing not only improved form but also function, enabling the creation of the extraordinary shape of the 720S doors.

. Perfectly hidden thanks to exceptional exterior design, two ducts are integrated into the door. The front duct is responsible for drawing air out of the wheel arch to create increased downforce, while the rear duct guides air into the High Temperature Radiators.

. Within this air passage is a bar which houses the door release buttons as well as further directing air down to the radiator.

Options . The Exterior Door Uppers can be selected in Gorilla Glass – allowing even more light into the car – or Gloss Finish Visual Carbon Fibre.

. As standard, the Exterior Door Uppers are gloss black.

30 Exterior - Aerodynamics

Teardrop Cabin Creating a perfect aerodynamic flow over and around the car makes Moving the High Temperature Radiator intakes between the teardrop helps to maximise downforce whilst keeping drag to a minimum, cabin and the outer skin of the car has resulted in the cabin sides being optimising the aerodynamic performance of the 720S. moved inward, delivering a dramatic teardrop-shaped canopy which has been emphasised with a piano black finish. Front Bumper The design of the front bumper is crucial as this is the first of the car’s components to interact with the airflow and dictate how the air is controlled before passing over the rest of the vehicle. At the bottom of the bumper the corners of the aero blades were moved further forward to generate more front downforce.

Wheel Arches A small diffuser is integrating into the front wheel arches which draws air out of the wheel arches – an idea that has its roots in the legendary McLaren P1™. The engineers were able to solve the challenge of integrating this duct into the extremely complex Dihedral Doors whilst maintaining a clean overall exterior design.

31 Exterior - Aerodynamics

Rear Aero Bridge Active Rear Spoiler with Air Brake and Automatic Drag Reduction The Rear Aero Bridge has been developed as a result of the design and System engineering challenge to provide all the cooling and aerodynamic The Active Rear Spoiler increases downforce during braking and performance the 720S requires without any large visible side air intakes cornering, while the Automatic Drag Reduction System reduces drag and ducts. when travelling at speed. The spoiler extends the whole width of the car and includes a mechanism that deploys up and increases its angle at the The Rear Aero Bridge sits between the teardrop shaped cabin and the same time. outer skin of the car, providing the engine with enough cool air even though a greater volume is required due to the increased engine power. To give the driver maximum support, the angle of the airbrake will It also directs air beneath the rear spoiler where it is then used to cool automatically change under braking. The rear spoiler creates 30% more the exhaust. downforce than the rear spoiler on the 650S.

The clever design of the Rear Aero Bridge keeps drag to a minimum while hiding the ducting behind the outer skin of the car. It results in all of the car’s cooling requirements being achieved without creating large protrusions in the exterior bodywork.

Rear Diffuser The 720S features a completely flat floor, feeding clean air to the rear of the vehicle and the aggressive diffuser. Integrating much sharper and thinner diffuser ‘fences’ further improves the diffuser’s efficiency.

32 Exterior - Cooling

Description The cooling system is based around four radiators. Two HTRs (High Temperature Radiators) are mounted just behind each door while two smaller LTRs (Low Temperature Radiators) are positioned in front of the front wheels.

Customer Benefits As a consequence of increased engine power, more cooling of the engine is needed. The HTR intakes guide the air flow towards the HTRs with air guided to them along channels in the hood, front fenders and doors.

The LTRs cooling the transmission and the charge air for the turbochargers. Again, the increased power of 720S meant the LTRs are also having to cool more air. As a solution, inlets were built around the headlights to gather more air whilst minimising the impact on aerodynamics and drag – a highly innovative feature unique to McLaren.

The ‘gills’ covering the engine vent hot air out of the engine bay and cool it faster when the car is stopped.

33 Exterior - Lights

Full LED Headlights with Static Adaptive Functionality Automatic Headlight Levelling Static adaptive headlights are an innovative feature designed to improve These self-levelling lights greatly improve long-range visibility by lifting both driver and pedestrian safety. The system moves the dipped the beam half a degree when the car reaches a certain speed. 35 Chassis - Brakes

Description These improvements mean that the 720S uses its brakes more efficiently by more evenly distributing the braking requirements over all 4 wheels. The 720S is equipped with Carbon Ceramic Brakes with 6-Piston Aluminium Calipers Front and 4-Piston Aluminium Calipers Rear and an electronic parking brake. The brake calipers are finished in gloss black As a result of ensuring the rear brakes work more effectively on 720S, with a white printed McLaren logo as standard. the braking contact surface between pad and disc on the rear brakes has been slightly increased, whilst the dimension of the front disc and contact surface between front brake pads and discs has been slightly Customer Benefits reduced. This increases the durability of the front brakes without A number of factors have contributed to the 720S having better braking increasing the wear rate of the rear brakes. The front and rear brake performance than 650S: caliper design has also been optimised to work with the redesigned brake discs and to save weight.

1. The 720S has a lower centre of gravity than 650S. This means that during braking there is less weight transfer onto the front axle In total, the 720S brakes are 2kgs lighter than the 650S brakes. and the rear axle maintains better grip because of higher vertical load, meaning the rear brakes are more effective. 2. Improved aero balance front to rear with the new rear spoiler active airbrake. This again means that the rear axle maintains Options better grip because of higher vertical load, meaning the rear Alternative brake caliper colours can brakes are more effective be selected as a cost option. 3. Optimised brake distribution which again makes the rear axle work harder during braking. 4. The 720S is lighter, meaning less mass has to be stopped. 5. Working closely with tyre partner Pirelli, the new P ZERO Tyres have more grip than their predecessors, making the braking 36 more effective. Chassis - Steering

Description An Electro-hydraulic steering rack maximises feel compared to a fully electric system.

Customer Benefits The 720S steering rack has been designed with refinement and feel as the key parameters. Electro-Hydraulic power steering is utilised throughout the McLaren range, insuring a natural feel that can not be replicated with a fully electric setup.

The quick steering rack ratio has been chosen to allow quick changes of direction and to improve ease of control when driving quickly, all pivotal to a great Supercar.

Changing handling modes between Comfort, Sport and Track varies the amount of steering assistance. Assistance decreases in Sport and then again further in Track mode. Combined with the changes to damping, steering feel increases in both Sport and Track modes.

37 Chassis - Tyres

Pirelli P ZERO Tyres A new design of Pirelli PZERO tyre is fitted as standard to the McLaren 720S. The PZERO tyre provides the optimum balance of performance, grip, handling and comfort for use in a wide range of road conditions. Its focus is on road usage, with the best balance of grip, stability and comfort where there is a high probability of mixed dry and wet driving conditions and the temperature is on average above 7 Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit).

Pirelli P ZERO Corsa Tyres For cars destined for track use, this tyre delivers even greater grip and braking performance. Though perfectly suitable for on road usage in a variety of summer driving conditions where the temperature is on average above 7 Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit) this is a super-performance tyre, most suited to ambient temperatures above 12 Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit).

39 Chassis - Proactive Chassis Control II

Proactive Chassis Control (PCC II) – making its debut on the 720S – From the customer’s standpoint, PCC II provides performance provides the driver with a staggering breadth of ability on all road like no other Supercar in the segment and the magic carpet ride surfaces. Combined with a true and consistently engaging level of expected from the McLaren Super Series. feedback, the system is primed to deliver the ultimate balance of body control and ride comfort.

PCC II makes a leap forward over the previous system through the use of constant vehicle dynamics monitoring, rather than monitoring driver inputs. This is underpinned by an incredibly advanced algorithm developed as part of a PHD at the University of Cambridge that helps PCC II decide how to react to dynamic changes.

Additional sensors on the uprights and dampers measure the wheel acceleration as well as the pressure in the dampers themselves. This extra data from the wheels enables the car to better read the road so that a suitable reaction can be defined and implemented before the body reacts to the road surface, rather than afterwards.

The aim of this is to maintain contact with the ground, significantly increasing grip and this in turn delivers stunning lap times not achievable without the system.

40 Powertrain - Engine

Description A key feature of the M840T are the new twin scroll turbochargers. The turbine wheel in the turbocharger is lighter, allowing the turbocharger to M840T 4.0-litre (3,994cc) twin-turbocharged V8 with 720PS (530 kW) spool up quicker. The exterior design of the Ferrari 488 GTB is very similar to the exterior design of the previous generation Ferrari 458 Ital ia. In contrast, the 720S features a brand new ground up exterior design, a big departure from the previous generation 650S. . The interior of the 488 GTB is also extremely similar to the 458 Italia. Some of the materials are not of the quality expecte d from a car in this segment, the dash and steering wheel are a slightly messy design, and the infotainment is difficult to use. . In contrast, the interior design of the 720S is much cleaner and uses high quality materials. Features such as the ambient li ghting, McLaren Driver Interface and glasshouse cabin mean that the 720S feels more special and modern than the 488 GTB. . In short, the interior of the 720S elevates the car above the 488GTB in terms of quality, modernity and driver engagement, se tting a new benchmark in the Supercar sector. . The 720S has a faster 0-100km/h time (2.9s vs. 3.0s), a faster 0-200km/h time (7.8 vs. 8.3s) and a higher top speed (341km/h vs. 330km/h). . McLaren 720S vs. Lamborghini Huracán

. The 4.0L Twin-Turbocharged V8 engine in the 720S is vastly superior to the engine in the Huracán. It has more power (720PS vs. 610PS), more torque (770Nm vs. 460Nm) and more power per litre (180PS vs. 117PS). . The new Carbon Fibre MonoCage II architecture used on the 720S is lighter, stiffer and stronger than the chassis of the Huracán. As a result, the 720S is 100kgs lighter (1,422kgs vs. 1,322kgs) and has a far superior power-to-weight ratio (545PS per tonne vs. 429PS per tonne). . The Huracán shares the vast majority of its components with the Audi R8 (chassis, engine, gearbox, brakes, suspension, satellite navigation and audio system) but is substantially more expensive. It is criticized for feeling like an expensive Audi R8, and the extra cost on top of an R8 is hard to justify. . The interior of the Huracán is quite cramped, especially for taller driver, and has far too many buttons in it. In contrast, the interior of the 720S is much more spacious, and has a much cleaner, less cluttered design with a whole host of features new to the segment, s uch as the ambient lighting, McLaren Driver Interface and glasshouse cabin. . In short, the 720S interior elevates the car above the Huracan in terms of quality, excitement and driver experience, setting a new benchmark in the Supercar sector. . The Huracán has also lost some of the driving thrill of the previous generation Gallardo. The aim from the outset with the 720S has bee n that driver thrills and enjoyment will be unrivalled by competitors. . The 0-100km/h time of the 720S is 0.3 seconds quicker (2.9s vs. 3.2s) and the 0-200km/h time is over 2 seconds quicker (7.8s vs. 9.9s). The top speed of the 720S is also higher (341km/h vs. 325km/h). . The 720S also has better fuel economy than the Huracan (26.4mpg vs. 23.6mpg) and produces less CO2 (249g/km vs. 280g/km).

82 Performance Vs. Competitors

McLaren 720S vs. Lamborghini Aventador S

. The 4.0L Twin-Turbocharged V8 in the 720S is more advanced than the Aventador S engine. Whilst the Aventador S has slightly more power (740PS vs. 720PS), the 720S has more torque (770Nm vs. 690Nm), more power per litre (180PS per litre vs. 114PS per litr e), and better fuel efficiency: 9.7mpg more and 145g/km less CO2. . The new Carbon Fibre MonoCage II architecture means that the 720S is much lighter than the Aventador S (1,322kgs vs. 1,575kgs) and has a better power-to-weight ratio (545PS per tonne vs. 463PS per tonne). Not only is the Aventador S heavy, but it is also very large. This makes the car extremely difficult to manoeuvre and live with on a daily basis. The 720S – with its smaller footprint and technology such as 360-degree Park Assist – is a much more usable and practical car. . The styling of the Aventador S is very aggressive and angular, not at all subtle, and this is not to everyone’s taste. In contrast, the sleek, smooth shape of the 720S is more traditional, and will appeal to those who are turned off by the brash exterior of the Aventador S. . The Aventador has also been criticised for having too much of an Audi-influenced interior, meaning it does not feel as special as a Supercar of that price should. The 720S interior elevates the car above the Aventador S in terms of quality, modernity and equipment level, setting a new benchmark in the Supercar sector. . The Aventador S is extremely similar to the Aventador, which was released in 2011, meaning the interior, engine and technology are becoming dated. In contrast, the 720S is a brand new, ground up design, featuring the latest interior technology and gamechanging new Carbon Fibre MonoCage II architecture. . The ride quality of the Aventador is extremely uncomfortable, especially on the road. The 720S however has been refined to be useable in all conditions on the road and on track. . The 720S and Aventador have the same 0-100km/h time (2.9s), but the 720S takes 1 second less to get to 200km/h (7.8s vs. 8.8s).
