Bulletinedition thirty 2021 two / editor: suzy cohen a year of olympian challenges As well as having a major disruptive effect on society and economy worldwide, COVID-19 impacted the Canon Foundation Fellows big time. Constantly changing rules and regulations and border closures meant that Fellows had to keep postponing their travel to Europe and Japan. Out of all the 2020 Canon Fellows, one Japanese Fellow actually succeeded in getting to Europe. You can read more about her further on in the bulletin. The Alumni Regional Fellow meeting for the UK and Ireland which was planned for April 2021 had to be postponed introduction again. We are now looking to November 2021 and inviting all Alumni Fellows in Europe and Japan to join and connect at an online event. We will email you more details later in the year if the meeting goes ahead. In the spirit in which the Canon Foundation in Europe was founded, we would just like to congratulate Japan on its successful hosting of the delayed 2020 Olympics. We can only hope that this signals an eventual return to the fruitful exchanges which some 500+ postgraduate researchers have benefitted from over the past 34 years. Dreamstime.com new chairman of the board David Bateson, Senior Vice-President Legal, Intellectual Property, Privacy & Sustainability at Canon Europe in the UK succeeded Paul Kers as Chairman from May 2021. During Paul’s time as Chairman, his support was key to launching the joint Japan-Africa Exchange Program with Kyoto University. Since the Program started, some 15 researchers have travelled between Africa and Japan to support ongoing development and expansion of African studies in Kyoto. The African Studies Centre at Kyoto University focusses on research and studies regarding Africa’s natural environment in relation to its peoples, cultures and endogenous development including the preservation of wild life in the area. These fields tie in perfectly with Canon’s corporate philosophy of kyosei – contributing to the harmony and well-being of mankind by nature. We thank Paul for his dedication to the Foundation and wish him a happy and healthy retirement. David Bateson new chairman of the board We welcome David who joined Canon in 2006 and is based at Canon’s headquarters in London. His in-depth knowledge and expertise in many business sectors and diverse corporate cultures throughout EMEA makes him ideally suited to head the Foundation and take it forward. the 2021-22 canon foundation in europe fellows Mr. Or Cohen-Sasson Dr. Giovanna Mioni new fellows from Tel Aviv University, Israel from University of Padova, Italy to Tsukuba University, Japan to University of Tokyo, Japan host Prof. Hisao Shiomi host Prof. Yuko Yotsumoto research field Law research field Psychology project title “Patent Law at the Age of Big Data” project title Probing explicit and implicit - At times, the changing technological environment timing considering modalities and temporal poses challenges to the law.
