My history as a performer really began to take shape after moving to London in 2008. Here I worked full-time as a performance artist with Pro-Dance (dance agent) http://www.prodance.co.uk/ After arriving back in Australia in 2010, I began training as a stage actor, completing a Performance Studies degree at Curtin University in 2012. It was here at Curtin that I developed a range of skills for the stage, including; Stage Combat (Andy Fraser), Shakespeare (Michael McCall), Voice (Polly Low), Devised Theatre (Leah Mercer), Laban Movement Analysis (Teresa Izzard). Since then I have begun working in contemporary dance projects. A few of my own and a couple with STRUT Dance. Once completing my Bachelor of Arts - double majoring in Anthropology and Performance Studies - I undertook an honours degree in Anthropology and was awarded First Class Honours. This secured me an APA scholarship for postgraduate study of which I am working on. My PhD research focuses on the world of hip hop and explores matters relating to hip hops representation in both academic and non-academic discourses. My writing is anthropological in nature covers a broad range of topics including embodiment, narrative, ethnicity, gender and performativity. ARTIST PROFILE MC Trey: The ‘Feline Force’ of Australian Hip Hop Tony Mitchell A Hip Hop Role Model Fijian-Australian MC Trey, aka Thelma Thomas, is arguably Australia’s leading female MC, who has begun to receive prominent mainstream media coverage for her Pacific Islander style, dynamic live performances, distinctively street-wise and musically diverse recordings, and her hip hop workshops. Described by Andrew Drever in the Sydney Morning Herald as ‘one of Australian hip hop’s true role models,’1 to date she has released two acclaimed mini-albums, the ten-track Daily Affirmations (2000)—described as a ‘landmark for the Australian hip hop scene’ and album of the week in Sydney street mag Revolver2—and the eight-track Tapastry Tunes (2003), described by George Palathingal in the Sydney Morning Herald’s ‘Metro’ as ‘[d]emonstrating potentially the biggest leap forward for Australian hip hop.’3 Trey (initially an anagram for ‘The Rhymin’ Edifying Young’un’) has also contributed tracks to numerous Australian hip hop compilations, most notably the all-woman First Words (2000), released on Sydney-based label Mother Tongues, described by label founder Heidi Pasqual as ‘the first label in the world dedicated to the development of Women in Hip Hop Music.’ On the US release Best of International Hip Hop (Hip-O Universal, 2000) she represents Australia with her ‘melodic, realistic, personal, political, positive’ MC style, alongside a host of non-Anglophone male MCs and crews from Argentina, Algeria, Switzerland, Israel, Romania, Greece, Austria, Greenland, Croatia, France, South Africa and Portugal. Trey’s track on the international hip hop compilation, ‘Feline Forces,’ is about the African- American and Australian women in hip hop who have influenced her, from Roxanne Shante to MC Lyte, Baby Love, MC Que and local graffiti artist and MC Charlene aka Spice, who ‘in ’88 dropped the first Aussie female tune’ (on the Virgin compilation of Australian hip hop 1 Andrew Drever, ‘Trey bien,’ Sydney Morning Herald 27 June 2003: ‘Metro’ 10.

No.2, 2011, ISSN 2013-6897 under the auspices of Coolabah Observatori: Centre d‘Estudis Australians, Australian Studies Centre, Universitat de Barcelona The Jackson Jive: Blackface Today and the Limits of Whiteness in Australia Jon Stratton Copyright © Jon Stratton 2011. This text may be archived and redistributed both in electronic form and in hard copy, provided that the author and journal are properly cited and no fee is charged Abstract: Blackface has had something of a renaissance in the United States. There it is invested with a postmodern, selfconsciously parodic quality. In Australia there has also been a renaissance of blackface. Here, however, it appears to continue to be invested more straightforwardly with racism. This article focuses on the notorious Jackson Jive sketch on Hey, Hey It's Saturday in 2009. In that sketch six men blacked up and wore cheap Afro wigs performing as if they were the Jackson Five. They claimed that the sketch was simply humorous. Australians were divided; many found the sketch offensive while many considered it enjoyable. A similar division in the population occurred when Sam Newman, an ex-Australian Rules footballer and knockabout comedian, blacked up in 1999 and pretended to be the Indigenous footballer, Nicky Winmar. In Australia blackface continues to reinforce the privileges of whiteness-even when, as was the case with the members of the Jackson Jive, most were in Australian terms either non-white or marginally white. In this case, blackface reinforced these men's honorary whiteness. Keywords: blackface; Jackson Jive; Nicky Winmar; larrikins; bogans; racism Introduction It‘s October 7th, 2009.

  • 13/Australian Hip Hop's Multi
AUSTRALIAN HIP HOP’S MULTI- 13/ CULTURAL LITERACIES / A SUBCULTURE EMERGES INTO THE LIGHT / TONY MITCHELL uch has been written in recent years about the relationship between hip hop Mculture, pedagogy and youth literacies in an African-American context (Ibrahim 2003; Dimitriades 2004; Ginwright 2004; Richardson 2006). However, hip hop is also being used increasingly in the broader educational contexts of language learning and popular culture studies both in the US and throughout the rest of the world. Hip Hop Studies is now a discipline taught in US universities (Forman & Neal 2004) and is gradually spreading to educational contexts in other parts of the world. In Hiphop literacies, Elaine Richardson (2006) argues for “the depth, the importance, and the immediate necessity of acknowledging one of the most contemporary, accessible, and contentious of African American literacies, Hiphop literacies” (p.xv). She sets out to locate hip hop discourses “within a trajectory of Black discourses” and to consider hip hop as an oral and semiotic form of discourse, analysing “rap music and song lyrics, electronic and digital media, including video games, music videos, telecommunication 231 SOUNDS OF THEN, SOUNDS OF NOW / POPULAR MUSIC IN AUSTRALIA devices, magazines, ‘Hip hop’ novels, oral performances, and cinema” (Richardson 2006, p.xvi). Richardson’s study is restricted by two major limitations. Apart from looking at the use of African-American language in online German hip hop sites, neither considers the indigenising global spread of hip hop beyond the boundaries of African-American vernacular cultures, nor the non-linguistic but fundamentally semiotic aspects of hip hop such as beatboxing, DJing, breakdancing and graffiti writing, which are arguably of equal importance to MCing as hip hop literacies.

  • Final Thesis (#5) 18
Niche Publications and Subcultural Authenticity: The case of Stealth magazine David Blight Submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Bachelor of Arts (MECO), Honours The Department of Media and Communications October 2008 1 ABSTRACT Authenticity is often constructed as an absolute subcultural value. Within the field of subcultural studies, a relatively small amount of literature exists regarding the relationship between different forms of media and subcultural notions of authenticity. Even less literature examines the relationship that individual media texts foster with subcultural niche markets or the internal techniques such publications utilise to discuss authenticity. This thesis aims to address these gaps by performing an in-depth analysis of a Sydney-based hip hop publication, Stealth magazine. The analysis explores how subcultural authenticity is constructed within this publication. In doing so, the nature of authenticity is called into question. 2 DECLARATION I certify that this thesis does not, to the best of my knowledge and belief: i) incorporate without acknowledgement any material previously submitted for a degree or diploma in any institutions of higher education; ii) contain any material previously submitted or written by another person except where due reference is made in the text; or iii) contain any defamatory material Signed: Date: 3 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Firstly, I have to give my undying gratitude to Megan Le Masurier, my supervisor. Without her support and constructive criticism, I would never have asked myself (nor would I have attempted to answer) some of the more difficult questions within this thesis. Her positive attitude gave me a great deal of strength in some of the more stressful times.
