Bernard Aimé Poulin

For 40 years, Bernard Poulin has been an artist-painter and portraitist. Many famous people have been the subject of his brush strokes. Among them are the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, Prime Minister of Canada; the Honourable Roméo Leblanc, Governor General of Canada and Speaker of the Senate; the late Yousuf Karsh, Canadian photographer; Paul Desmarais, President of the Power Corporation and Chancellor of Memorial University; the Honourable Jennifer Smith, Prime Minister of Bermuda; the Honorable Stanley Lowe, Speaker of the House of Assembly of Bermuda; William Boyle, Mayor of Hamilton, capital of Bermuda; Marcel Hamelin, President of the University of Ottawa; and a young Prince William, son of the Prince of Wales and the late Diana Spencer. For more than 20 years, he was lecturer and chef d’atelier in Canada, the United States and Bermuda. Since 1995, philanthropic investors have been coming together to commission entire exhibitions focusing, among other things, on Tuscany and Venice (1996), Provence (1998), Jerusalem (2000) and Paris (2005). Poulin also sculpts bronze. As a muralist, he has created several three dimensional projects, such as the ones in the main lobby of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Solange Karsh Centre for Medical Research, as well as the bronze and marble sculpture in the lobby of the Ottawa Children’s Aid Society. Further, the artist has contributed to more than a dozen books on drawing techniques in Canada and the United States. Some of his articles have been translated into Italian, and six of his appearances on Franco- Ontarian television have been translated into Portuguese. The author of seven books, of which five on the topic of drawing, he is currently preparing his eighth and ninth manuscripts. His most recent work, The Complete Colored Pencil Book, 1992 (75,000 copies sold) was translated in 1995, in Paris, under the title Le crayon de couleur (éditions Ulysse). The book was reprinted in soft cover in 2002. The Bernard Aimé Poulin Scholarships were created in 1990 by the Canadian Hadassah-WISO organization, and are awarded to visual arts students. Bernard Aimé Poulin was born in Windsor, Ontario (1945), and currently lives in Ottawa. He is married to the Honorable Marie-Paule (Charette) Poulin, and they have two adult children, Elaine and Valérie.

Muraliste, il a réalisé plusieurs projets tridimensionnels, tel celui à l’entrée principale de l’Hôpital des enfants de l’est de l’Ontario, celui du Centre de recherche médicale Solange Karsh et celui (sculpture en bronze et marbre) dans le hall principal de la Société de l’aide à l’enfance à Ottawa. L’artiste a participé à la réalisation de plus de 12 livres de techniques du dessin au Canada et aux États- Unis. On a déjà traduit de ses articles (en italien) et aussi six émissions télévisées auxquelles il a participé à la télévision française de l’Ontario (en portugais). Auteur de sept livres, donc cinq sur le dessin, M. Poulin prépare ses huitième et neuvième manuscrits. Few modern-era exploration geologists have made the transition to company builder and mine developer as successfully as Terry MacGibbon. He applied the expertise and experience gained over a 30-year career with nickel giant Inco to build four substantial mining companies: FNX Mining, Torex Gold Resources, TMAC Resources and INV Metals. Along the way, he earned a reputation as a financially astute entrepreneur, innovator, and all-round positive role model for the Canadian mining industry. Born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, MacGibbon earned a BSc (Geology) from St. Francis Xavier University in 1968, before joining Inco’s exploration department. He was an early advocate of the Voisey’s Bay discovery in Labrador, later acquired by Inco, and supported other discoveries as he climbed the ranks culminating in him directing global exploration. These projects all faced challenges such as escalating costs, lack of community support, and political and taxation issues. MacGibbon applied his “three Ps of Success” — perseverance, patience and passion — and built teams of like-minded professionals to help overcome these challenges. Torex Gold grew to become a mid-size gold producer at Morelos, with estimated gold production of 345,000 ounces for 2017. TMAC achieved commercial production at Hope Bay in May 2017, with a market value of over $1.5 billion, while INV has advanced Loma Larga to the development stage and expects to be in production in 2020. MacGibbon’s strategic approach to project acquisition, disciplined capital spending, and integrity helped him raise billions of dollars of capital, often in difficult market conditions. He assembled strong management and operating teams, notable for their high percentage of women. MacGibbon is also an exemplary role model for corporate social responsibility. MacGibbon chaired Laurentian University’s Next 50 Campaign that raised over $65 million on a $50 million goal.

Il a mis en pratique son expertise et son expérience acquises au cours de plus de 30 ans de carrière chez le géant du nickel Inco pour établir quatre compagnies minières d’envergure : FNX Mining, Torex Gold Resources, TMAC Resources et INV Metals. Denise Truax

Since 1988, Denise Truax has been at the helm of Éditions Prise de parole, the oldest French- Canadian publishing house, which releases about twenty new works of poetry, drama, fiction and non-fiction every year. The publisher’s holdings now include 500 titles written by approximately 175 authors. Under her leadership, many of those books have been recognized with prestigious awards, including five Governor General Awards (Jean Marc Dalpé [3], Robert Dickson and Herménégilde Chiasson), as well as several Trillium Book Awards. Actively involved in cultural and book associations and organizations throughout her career, Truax is a founding member of Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury and the Regroupement des éditeurs franco- canadiens. She sat on the boards of the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française, which she chaired from 1993 to 1997, and the Ontario Arts Council. In recognition of her work in arts and culture in French-Ontario, she received the Prix du Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury and Prix du Nouvel- Ontario, and was awarded the Prix Hommage of the Fédération culturelle canadienne-française for her contributions to arts in French-Canada. Prise de parole won a Community Builders Awards of Excellence in the Arts category (2012) during her tenure, and was twice (2013, 2015) a finalist for the Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in the Arts. Prise de parole is a founding partner of the Place des Arts project, in Sudbury. Throughout her career, Truax has benefited authors with her wealth of expertise, devoting herself to emerging new authors all the while accompanying several other exceptional authors over the long term. Seven authors published by Prise de parole have received honorary doctorates from Laurentian University in recognition of the literary contributions: Marguerite Andersen, Herménégilde Chiasson, Jean Marc Dalpé, Patrice Desbiens, Robert Dickson, Tomson Highway and Gaétan Gervais.

Ned Goodman, founder of Dundee Corporation and patriarch of the Goodman Family, is regarded as one of Canada’s most successful investment leaders. He has become an iconic figure in this country’s investment history with a career spanning more than five decades. Mr. Goodman instilled the values of – integrity, community, entrepreneurial drive and critical thinking – in the organization and are hallmarks of the ‘Dundee business family.’ He has made transformative and enduring contributions to Canada’s minerals industry and capital markets as a company-builder, merchant banker and investment advisor during a dynamic career spanning almost half a century. In addition to being an outstanding member of the philanthropic community, Montreal-born Goodman founded the first exploration flow-through partnership, CMP Group, which has raised almost $5 billion since the 1980s to help companies explore and develop mining and petroleum companies, leading to the generation of jobs and benefits for rural and northern economies in Canada. He was also the driving force of the Dundee group of financial companies, which grew under his leadership from a $300-million base to a $50-billion mutual fund entity. Mr. Goodman is the benefactor that created the Goodman School of Mines at Laurentian University. He was the Chancellor of Brock University and founder of the Goodman Institute of Investment Management at Concordia University where he is an adjunct professor. He is a meaningful benefactor of many worthy causes. Among his many awards and honours are PDAC’s Developer of the Year Award, presented in 1989; the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2004 and the Morningstar Investment Career Achievement Award in 2005.

The Mace is a symbol of authority and guidance. It is shouldered by the Macebearer who, clothed in a specially designed gown, leads the procession of graduands, faculty, members of the Board of Governors, special guests, the Chancellor, and the President and Vice- Chancellor, into the auditorium to participate in the Convocation ceremony. When the entire procession has entered, the Mace is placed on a designated pedestal before the Chancellor, at the front of the stage. It remains there until the closure of the Convocation ceremony, at which time it is borne again by the Macebearer who leads the Convocation procession out of the auditorium. Laurentian’s Mace was designed by Dora de Pedery-Hunt. It was crafted from Sudbury metals – copper and nickel – and adorned with golden studs, representing strength and power. The University’s crest is engraved at the tip of the shaft. This gift from The Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (IODE), Elizabeth Fry Chapter, was presented to the University at their annual dinner on May 17, 1966.

La Masse est un symbole d’autorité et de gouverne. Elle est portée par le massier qui, revêtu d’une toge spécialement conçue, mène à l’intérieur de l’auditorium le cortège formé des diplômés, du corps professoral, des membres du Conseil des gouverneurs, des invités spéciaux, du chancelier et du recteur et vice-chancelier pour participer à la cérémonie de la collation des grades. Lorsque le cortège entier a fait son entrée, la Masse est déposée à l’avant de la scène, devant le chancelier, sur un socle destiné à cet effet. Elle y demeure jusqu’à la fin de la cérémonie, moment auquel le massier la reprend pour conduire le cortège à l’extérieur de l’auditorium. La Masse de l’Université Laurentienne est l’oeuvre de Dora de Pedery-Hunt. Elle a été confectionnée à partir de métaux trouvés dans la région de Sudbury – le cuivre et le nickel – et ornée de cloutages dorés qui représentent la force et le pouvoir. L’écusson de l’Université est gravé au bout du manche de la Masse. Ce cadeau de l’Ordre impérial des filles de l’Empire, section Elizabeth Fry, a été présenté à l’Université lors du banquet annuel de l’Ordre tenu le 17 mai 1966. Chancellor of Laurentian University

Steve Paikin is the host of TVO’s flagship current affairs program, The Agenda with Steve Paikin, the gold standard for in depth of analysis and thoughtful debate in Canadian media. In more than 35 years in the business, Steve has built a sterling reputation as an eminently fair journalist, who has moderated federal and Ontario election debates. Earlier in his career, Steve worked at CBC News as an anchor and correspondent, a reporter for the Hamilton Spectator and CHFI radio, as well as radio and television stations in Boston. Steve has authored seven books including his latest, Bill Davis: Nation Builder, and Not So Bland After All, has produced several feature-length documentaries, and reported from two different war zones. In October 2013, Steve became an educational ambassador and was appointed Chancellor of Laurentian University in Sudbury. He was re-appointed in 2018. He is also a distinguished visiting professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. Steve has honorary degrees from Laurentian, Victoria University at the University of Toronto, McMaster University in Hamilton, and York University. He also has honorary diplomas from Humber, Centennial, and Mohawk Colleges. In December of 2013, Steve was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions as a journalist who engages, informs and educates viewers on a broad range of public policy issues, and was invested into the Order of Ontario in 2014. Steve was born in Hamilton, Ontario and lives in Toronto.

Chancellor of Laurentian University The Chancellor of the University is a volunteer appointed by the Board of Governors. The Chancellor is the titular and ceremonial head of the University and assists the University in its advocacy, advancement activities, and national recognition efforts. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing, the Chancellor of Laurentian University will:

• Act as an ambassador for the University; • Preside over Convocation and confer degrees; • Serve as a member of the Board of Governors; • Participate in, or preside over, ceremonial or other important events on campus; • Represent the University in an official capacity at external functions from time to time; • Perform a strong leadership role on behalf of the University; • Engage in profile-raising activities; • Assist in advancement activities (friend-raising and fund-raising); • Advocate directly, or through a network of connections, for the post-secondary system, and for Laurentian University in particular; • Provide advice to the President and Vice-Chancellor. Convocation is an impressive ceremony, steeped in dignity and decorum, which is conducted according to long-standing traditions. The colourful academic regalia – caps, gowns, and hoods – worn by teaching and administrative staff are a legacy from medieval universities such as Paris, Bologna, Oxford, and Cambridge. They indicate the university from which its bearer graduated and the highest degree awarded to that person. Most of the distinctive characteristics appear in the hood. Originally a practical element of dress, the hood has evolved into a separate and purely ornamental article, draped over the shoulder and down the back. The hoods worn by graduands are either bordered or lined with colours that indicate the degree to be conferred.

Celle-ci est une cérémonie impressionnante, empreinte de dignité et de décorum, qui se déroule selon des traditions anciennes.
