(published1958) PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY BY W. E. HARRISON & SONS, LTD., THE ANCIENT HOUSE, IPSWICH. TE X\ \ Pari of (In. Dandy iwdigrec, showing \ chiovcmcnt C. THE DANDY PEDIGREE By FRANCISW. STEER, F.S.A. t • A pedigree of the family of Dandy, or Daundy, based on the Visitations of Suffolk, 1612 and 1664', was printed, with additional notes from Reyce's MS., by G. A. Carthew, in The East Anglian, vol. n (1866), pp. 164-5, with further observations on pp. 163 and 166. Other pedigrees of the family are in the British Museuni (Add. MS. 19126, if. 111-120, and Harl. MS. 1560, if. 310-313) and in the Bodleian Library (Tanner MSS. 180, f. 159, and 257, 398-403). I am indebted to our Honorary Editor, Mr. Leslie Dow, F.S.A., for directing me to all these sources which I have examined and compared with a pedigree of the Dandy family now in the possession of Mr. C. H. Bullivant of Minehead, Somerset, to whom I must also record my thanks for his courtesy in allowing it to be published. The document owned by Mr. Bullivant is 9 ft. 6 in. long by 2 ft. 4- in. wide. It consists of sheets of parchment pasted together on which are written sixteen generations reciting the descent of the Dandy family and some of its alliances. There are 141 entries each accompanied by a shield of arms of which most were originally finely painted; in addition, there are six achievements and ,sqven panels of notes. Unhappily, the•document has been harshly treated in the past and a good deal of abrasion and flaking has resulted in the loss of some information. The damage is mainly to the right-hand side and lower third of the pedigree, but a lot of additional or confirmatory notes have been obtained from the manuscript sources quoted above and ,are incorporated as foot- notes. An attempt to read or photograph the flaked portions of the pedigree with the aid of ultra-violet light was unsuccessful. Plate XXXV gives some idea of the appearance of the pedigree. The pedigree was probably drawn up about the end of the sixteenth century, authenticated by Ralph Brooke (1553-1625) York Herald, and entered in the Visitation of Suffolk by John Raven in 1612. Many additions made soon after the completion of the pedigree, and continued in later hands, gave rise to a number of doubts of which most, I hope, have now been disposed of. Although the pedigree was commissioned by the Dandy family, they do not figure in it until Edmund Dandy (No. 84) in the eleventh generation.- Spaces are provided (Nos. 47, 54, 62, 68-69 and 77) in the five preceding generations of which four could have been filled by this descent :— 134 SUFFOLK INSTITUTE OF ARCHZEOLOGY Arthur Dandy T Ellen, dau. of . Mondeford Edmund Dandy -7 . dau. of Bedingfeld William (or Thomas) Dandy Ellen, dau. of . Warner Thomas Dandy Mary, dau. of John Wingfield of 1 Wingfield Edmund Dandy (No. 84) which is given in B. M. Harl, MS. 1560 and Add. MS. 19126. Some notes about Edmund (No. 84) and his gift of a Market Cross to Ipswich in 1510 are given in The Suffolk Garland (1818), pp. 158-9, where there is also a poem (p. 160) by Bernard Barton on its destruction; some of these notes are copied in B. M. Add. MS. 19126, f. 117v. Arms in a window of Sir John Fenn's house at East Dereham were described in The East Anglian vol. pp. 141-2; those relating to the Dandy family are mentionedin the footnotes to the pedigree transcribed below. These shields enable us to verify some of those on Mr. Bullivant's pedigree. The quarterings of Achieve- ment D have been principally identified from The Visitation of Essex, 1612 (Harl. Soc., vol. 13, 1878), pp. 312-3; attention is also drawn to the illustration of the dexter shield on the gateway of Nettlestead Hall following p. 54 of W. L. Rutton, ThreeBranchesof the Family of Wentworth (1891) and to the text and arms on the Wentworth Roll published by te present writer in Notes & Queries, vol. 196 (0.U.P., 1951), pp. 552-8. This manuscript pedigree is of value both as a genealogical and heraldic record. For the genealogist it provides a number of descents which give a lead to family alliances perhaps not other- wise easily ascertainable, and at the same time emphasizes that close connexion between many families in a relatively small area. Like all early pedigrees (and especially those drawn up by Tudor and early Stuart heralds), it must be used with caution and its claims checked against other sources; no attempt has been made to verify the entire Dandy pedigree, but it is hoped that the text given below and the various other sources quoted will furnish much information and clues for anyone wishing to compile a record of that family's descent. The attraction of the document from an heraldic aspect is shown by the Appendix giving the bearers of eighty-eight coats of arms. The transcript should be read in conjunction with the key chart. The original spelling has been retained, words omitted in the original or lost through flaking are indicated by the use of square brackets, while longer passages lost to us (e.g. the note THE DANDY PEDIGREE 135 following Achievement B) are denoted by dots. The following abbreviations have been used in the footnotes:— A- British Museum, Additional MS. 19126, ff. 111-116, which is a collection of Suffolk pedigrees by David Elisha Davy of Yoxford. H—British Museum, Harleian MS. 1560; this is a copy by Richard Mundy of the Visitations of Suffolk in 1561, 1577 and 1612-13, with some added pedigrees.
