The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Florida Chapter founded the AMA program in 2012 to celebrate contemporary work in classical and traditional design. The awards program celebrates the achievement of the finest practitioners in the fields of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urbanism, as well as craftsmanship and the fine arts. The awards are named for Addison Mizner, the architect whose civic and domestic works defined the standards of excellence in composition and craftsmanship for classical and traditional design in the early years of urban development in Florida. The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Florida Chapter conducts educational workshops on the elements of classical architecture, on-site drawing sessions, a lecture series on the architecture and urbanism of Florida and the Caribbean, the Palladio program in collaboration with the University of Miami School of Architecture, and hosts the annual Addison Mizner Awards. We offer our appreciation to all the individuals and firms who submitted projects for consideration and express our gratitude to the distinguished AMA Jury for their deliberation and selection of the 2019 Awards. The practice is based in London and has projects throughout the United Kingdom. Smith & Taylor were recently included in the Architecture Foundation’s publication New Architects 3, described as “the definitive survey of Britain’s best emerging practices”. Jonathan studied at Edinburgh College of Art, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and at the University of Wales. Prior to establishing his own practice he worked on masterplanning schemes in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Edinburgh’s Old Town, with a renowned conservation practice in Edinburgh, and for practices in London and Malawi. Together with Timothy Smith, he teaches Europe’s only M.Arch design studio directly engaged with the classical language of architecture at Kingston School of Art, London, and on the INTBAU / Ax:on Johnson European Summer School in Classical Architecture, a month-long intensive course based in Sweden. Work by Smith & Taylor and their KSA students was exhibited at the 2019 Lisbon Architecture Triennial. Rafael Portuondo Rafael Portuondo is known as one of today’s top designers of classical architecture in America and is the President of Portuondo Perotti Architects. Ralph earned a Master’s Degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation and an undergraduate degree at the University of Miami. His timeless designs capture the Old World European classical elegance and brings them to life in today’s luxury home creations. A sought-after speaker at the Nation’s top architectural institutions, Rafael is the soft-spoken artist setting the standard for excellence in timeless American Architecture. Sarah Magness Sarah Magness Design is a leading global residential design firm based in New York City. Led by architectural designer Sarah Magness, the firm is known for its strong understanding of classical principles and techniques that apply a vast array of international resources to every one of its projects. She holds an MA in Interior Architecture from Pratt Institute and a Architecture BA from University of Texas, Austin. Sarah has been featured in top outlets such as Architectural Digest, Town & Country, Vogue and was recognized by House Beautiful as one of the top Next Wave of young American designers. Sarah is also passionately involved with the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s New Heights program which introduces fundamental concepts of building, design and architectural language to middle school students. Her work has also been featured for the Holiday House 2017. Sarah serves on the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s President Council, and as a Board Member on the Landmarks Conservancy of New York, and the Pella Design Council. She is also an American Institute of Architects Associate, and member of the American Society of Interior Designers, Soane Foundation, Royal Oaks Foundation, and the Design Leadership Network.
