Lemon Bottlebrush
www.milazzoflora.it Lemon bottlebrush Melaleuca citrina, commonly known as common red, crimson or lemon bottlebrush, is a plant in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae and is endemic to New South Wales and Victoria in Australia. (Callistemon citrinus and Callistemon lanceolatus is an older name.) It is a hardy and adaptable species, common in its natural habitat. Its showy red flower spikes, present over most of the year in an ideal situation, account for its popularity. Melaleuca citrina is a shrub growing to 5 m (20 ft) tall but more usually in the range 1–3 m (3–10 ft) high and wide. The flowers are red and arranged in spikes on the ends of branches that continue to grow after flowering and sometimes also in the upper leaf axils. Melaleuca citrina occurs in near coastal areas of New South Wales, including the Blue Mountains and extends as far west as the Central Western Slopes. It also occurs in the east coast areas of Victoria and grows in swamps and along creeks and rivers. The cultivar Splendens, is a form with a compact and rounded habit, growing to about 4 metres high and wide. Their valuable therapeutic properties have stimulated a fruitful research activity addressed to the identification of the bioactive components of their extracts yielding a great diversity of terpenes; polyphenols; and other exclusive products. Among the latter, starting with the discovery of myrtucommulone A from myrtle (Myrtus communis), a series of structurally-related acylphloroglucinol compounds have been characterized from several species that represent the basic active principles to be considered in view of possible drug development. Aspects concerning chemical and biological properties of these products are reviewed in the present paper. Introduction Myrtle (Myrtus communis) is a typical shrub of maquis and coastal bushes native of the Mediterranean area and Western Asia. Fruits have a great diversity of Anti-inflammatory metabolites, among which phenolic compounds stand out for their potential antioxidant, anti- Antimutagenic inflammatory and other effects, and which have a preventive action on diseases of modernity. This Antioxidants review aimed to associate studies on the metabolic activities of Garcinia fruits and their numerous Cardiovascular disease effects on health risk factors, such as obesity, hyperglycemia, inflammatory processes and Garcinia dyslipidemias. Scientific articles published in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected, which carried out studies involving the administration of Garcinia fruits in vitro and in vivo, mainly in the last five years. Sixty relevant articles were included in the study. -

LandCorp Denmark East Development Precinct Flora and Fauna Survey October 2016 Executive summary Introduction Through the Royalties for Regions “Growing our South” initiative, the Shire of Denmark has received funding to provide a second crossing of the Denmark River, to upgrade approximately 6.5 km of local roads and to support the delivery of an industrial estate adjacent to McIntosh Road. GHD Pty Ltd (GHD) was commissioned by LandCorp to undertake a biological assessment of the project survey area. The purpose of the assessment was to identify and describe flora, vegetation and fauna within the survey area. The outcomes of the assessment will be used in the environmental assessment and approvals process and will identify the possible need for, and scope of, further field investigations will inform environmental impact assessment of the road upgrades. The survey area is approximately 68.5 ha in area and includes a broad area of land between Scotsdale Road and the Denmark River and the road reserve and adjacent land along East River Road and McIntosh Road between the Denmark Mt Barker Road and South Western Highway. A 200 m section north and south along the Denmark Mt Barker Road from East River Road was also surveyed. The biological assessment involved a desktop review and three separate field surveys, including a winter flora and fauna survey, spring flora and fauna survey and spring nocturnal fauna survey. Fauna surveys also included the use of movement sensitive cameras in key locations. Key biological aspects The key biological aspects and constraints identified for the survey area are summarised in the following table. -

A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation i Abstract Australian rainforests are of mixed biogeographical histories, resulting from the collision between Sahul (Australia) and Sunda shelves that led to extensive immigration of rainforest lineages with Sunda ancestry to Australia. Although comprehensive fossil records and molecular phylogenies distinguish between the Sunda and Sahul floristic elements, species distributions, functional traits or landscape dynamics have not been used to distinguish between the two elements in the Australian rainforest flora. The overall aim of this study was to investigate both Sunda and Sahul components in the Australian rainforest flora by (1) exploring their continental-wide distributional patterns and observing how functional characteristics and environmental preferences determine these patterns, (2) investigating continental-wide genomic diversities and distances of multiple species and measuring local species accumulation rates across multiple sites to observe whether past biotic exchange left detectable and consistent patterns in the rainforest flora, (3) coupling genomic data and species distribution models of lineages of known Sunda and Sahul ancestry to examine landscape-level dynamics and habitat preferences to relate to the impact of historical processes. First, the continental distributions of rainforest woody representatives that could be ascribed to Sahul (795 species) and Sunda origins (604 species) and their dispersal and persistence characteristics and key functional characteristics (leaf size, fruit size, wood density and maximum height at maturity) of were compared. -

Recent work has resulted in the recognition of five new species of Melaleuca from the south-west of Western Australia: M. genialis Lepschi, M. ochroma Lepschi, M. protrusa Craven & Lepschi, M. sophisma Lepschi, and M. ulicoides Craven & Lepschi. Reassessment of the taxonomic status of three previously described taxa shows that specific rank is warranted and the following three new combinations are made: M. acutifolia (Benth.) Craven & Lepschi, M. calcicola (Barlow ex Craven) Craven & Lepschi, and M. spectabilis (Barlow ex Craven) Craven & Lepschi. Melaleuca citrina Turcz. is a later homonym of M. citrina (Curtis) Dum.Cours. and the replacement name M. lutea Craven is provided. Melaleuca viminalis (Sol. ex Gaertn.) Byrnes, hitherto known only from eastern Australia has recently been collected from the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia. Introduction Melaleuca L. is one of the larger genera of Myrtaceae and, as it is currently circumscribed, contains about 280 species. The genus is predominantly Australian with indigenous taxa also occurring in Malesia, New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island and Tasmania. -

Abstract Currently, synthetic chemical pediculicides have lost their efficacy due to worldwide increased resistance of head lice to them. Therefore, safe, natural product alternatives are in dire need. This study investigated the efficacy of an herbal shampoo made from Garcinia dulcis (Roxb.) added with either Citrus aurantium EO or Eucalyptus globulus EO against head lice in both in vitro and in vivo tests. In vitro experiment used a filter paper contact method to evaluate the pediculicidal activity of the shampoo at 0.002, 0.003 and 0.006 ml/cm2 doses (per unit area of petri dish plate) on nymphs and adults of head lice. In vivo trial, the infested children were treated with the shampoo. The results showed either cured or not cured of pediculosis. The main results showed LC50 values against nymphs for G. dulcis + C. aurantium EO shampoo and G.
