Purity of Arms: Educating Ethical Warriors in the Israeli Army By Noam Zion Shalom Hartman Institute Jerusalem, Israel 2016 Abstract: Jewish religious, Israeli national and Western legal traditions combine in the Israeli army’s study unit designed to teach ethical treatment of civilians in war. Israeli tradition has invented the term “purity of arms” to describe the honor code calling upon IDF soldiers to “do all in their power to prevent harming the lives, bodies, dignity and property” of enemy civilians. That code has legal force in Israel’s Jewish democratic courts and in its military disciplinary law, but the focus of this analysis is not on law or its enforcement. Rather we will explore the educational methods and authoritative traditions enlisted to teach these rules as values and to develop moral judgement in individual commanders facing difficult moral dilemmas in ambiguous and dangerous field conditions.1 In this study no attempt is made to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching of this unit and its influence on the actual practice of the Israeli army in combat situations. However, it should be noted that the value of Purity of Arms and the Spirit of the Israeli Defense Code of Ethics is often cited as a norm relevant to judging cases in the Military Courts.i In such cases, soldiers and officers have been convicted for crimes such as beating, humiliating, robbing and killing innocent Palestinian civilians. Parade examples of such crimes and their punishment have then become cases studied in curriculum units on purity of arms studied here and officers discuss their responsibility to prevent the repetition of such violations by their soldiers. -

Yale University Press , 2008 , 544 $32.50 Summary: Israel should pull back settlements and give up its '67 gains in order to secure its '48 victory. Shlomo Ben-Ami was Israel's Foreign Minister in 2000-2001. He is Vice President of the Toledo International Center for Peace, in Spain, and the author of Scars of War, Wounds of Peace: The Israeli-Arab Tragedy. For 60 years, both the Israelis and the Palestinians have used the past to illuminate the present and confer legitimacy on their nations' respective founding myths. Of course, Zionists and Palestinian nationalists were not the first to embellish the stories of their nations' births or make excuses for their tragedies. Throughout history, nations have been born in blood and frequently in sin. This is why, as the French philosopher Ernest Renan wrote, they tend to lie about their pasts. The birth of the state of Israel in 1948 has long been the subject of self-congratulatory historiography by the victorious side and grievance-filled accounts by disinherited Palestinians. To the Israelis, the 1948 war was a desperate fight for survival that was settled by an almost miraculous victory. In the Arab world, accounts of the war tend to advance conspiracy theories and attempt to shift the blame for the Arabs' defeat. In both cases, the writing of history has been part of an uncritical nationalist quest for legitimacy. -

Elle se base sur la Guerre du Liban de 1982 en tant que guerre la plus controversée des guerres israéliennes en raison de sa contradiction avec la norme israélienne de seulement mener des guerres de légitime défense (à savoir lorsqu'il n'y a aucun autre recours que la guerre). ABSTRACT This thesis engages with the relationship between national identity, security-based narratives, and foreign policy. It focuses on the 1982 Lebanon War as the most controversial in Israel's history because it violated the Israeli societal norm of only fighting wars of self- defence (when there is no alternative to war). Through an examination of Israeli films about the 1982 war – Ricochets, Time for Cherries, Cup Final, Waltz with Bashir and Lebanon – this thesis studies the identity crisis experienced by Israelis after the invasion of Lebanon and the coping mechanisms that helped Israeli society reconcile the war with the security- based narratives that inform collective identity in Israel. -

This year Palestinians throughout the world will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Nakba and will reflect on its real essence——as the most traumatic catastrophe that ever befell the Palestinians. Today some 70 percent of the Palestinians are refugees; there are more than five million Palestinian refugees in the Middle East and many more worldwide. 1948 saw the establishment of a settler-colonial Zionist state on 78 percent of Mandatory Palestine. It also symbolised the Palestinian Nakba (the “disaster” or “catastrophe”)——the destruction of historic Palestine and “ethnic cleansing” of the Palestinians. One of the first to label it Nakba was Constantine Zurayk, a distinguished Arab historian, in his book The Meaning of the Disaster [Zurayk 1956], a self-critical analysis of the socio- economic causes of the Arab defeat in the 1948 war, written and published while the war was still going on. The term also became the title of the monumental work of Palestinian historian and mayor of East Jerusalem, ‘Arif Al-‘Arif, The Disaster: The Disaster of Jerusalem and the Lost Paradise 1947–52 (Al-Nakba: Nakbat Bayt al-Maqdis Wal-Firdaws al-Mafqud, 1947– 1952) [Al-‘Arif 1958–1960]. The year of the Nakba is a key date in the history of the Palestinian people——a year of dramatic rupture in the continuity of historical space and time in Palestinian history. -
