This report covers financial year of both entities from January to December 2019. During this period, the finances improved considerably, mainly due to several successful fundraising events and some modest growth in membership for a third year running. The combined surplus/profit for the year 2019 amounted to €15,268, compared to €2952 the previous year. Introduction The Limerick Athenaeum is comprised of two separate buildings at Upper Cecil Street Limerick. The original building, which now houses the Limerick Vocational Educational Committee [LVEC], was built as the offices of the Commissioners of St. Michael’s Parish in 1833. It was, in effect, the Town Hall of Georgian Limerick. The second building, the Athenaeum Hall was built by the Limerick Athenaeum as a Lecture Theatre in 1855. 1833 MINUTES OF St MICHAEL'S PARISH COMMISSIONERS [Source: From original manuscripts at the Limerick Archives] April 19th 1833: At a meeting of the above, with William White in the Chair, it was resolved that the proposal of John Stokes end Michael Guerin to build the new Parish Offices be accepted, for the sum of'£ 1,070 sterling. The contractors have to expend £300 before they get any money from the Board. Nicholas Hannon is appointed superintendent. Report in the Limerick Chronicle of the 20th April 1833: "The Commissioners of St Michael's Parish, yesterday, agreed with Mr Stokes, architect, for the sum of £1,070 to erect premises for a Watch-House, Board-Room etc in Cecil Street, to be accomplished on the 1st January next". Extracts from the Minute Books of the Commissioners of St. Michael's Parish: Page 2: Creagh & Charles McMahon act as guarantors for contractors. Introduction Built Heritage The Limerick Boat Club sits like a Victorian jewel on Wellesley Pier in the middle of the majestic Shannon River. Like a cultural emblem, the history of the club intertwines with the rich heritage of Limerick City and her people. c 1902 tinted postcard of Limerick Boat Club with views of Harvey's Quay, Howley's Quay, The Bishop's Quay, Russell's Quay and Steamboat Quay. Just visible is the spire of the red brick Presbyterian Church on the corner of Henry Street and Lower Mallow Street The boat house and the club house are built on Harbour Pier, or Wellesley Pier, and are accessed via Sarsfield Bridge. The corresponding jetty known as Poor Man's Kilkee is attached to Harvey's Quay and forms a lock. Wellesley Pier: Built c 1820. A substantial stone pier demonstrating the solid masonry skills of its time. While serving many functions, this pier is a landmark on the riverscape of Limerick and provides a recreational use along the River Shannon. In the background of the club house, you see Bannatyne's Granary, Spaight's Timber Mill & Stores, The Bishop's Palace, Newtown Pery Corn Mills, Mount Kennett Corn Mills and a sailing ship unloading by Harvey's Quay Cultural Heritage Cultural heritage is the legacy of both the physical and the intangible attributes of a group that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations.
