Starr (Won Kwang University) Introduction Ælfric, Abbot of Eynsham, was a Benedictine monk, educated at Winchester in Wessex, which was refounded by Bishop Æthelwold for the Benedictine Reform movement in 973. The Benedictines under Æthelwold had received unprecedented support, material and devotional, from King Edgar and Queen Ælfthryth in the mid to late tenth century (Yorke 65-68).1) In 987 when Cerne Abbas was founded, Ælfric was commissioned by Æthelmær, the son of the powerful alderman Æthelweard, to serve as mass-priest there. He was soon asked to translate Latin homilies into English, and the result was the Catholic * This research was supported by a 2009 Won Kwang University research grant. 1) See Godden’s “Money, Power and Morality.” 318 Rebecca I. Starr Homilies (ca. 992-995; CH hereafter). Manuscript evidence suggests these homilies were read to congregations throughout Anglo-Saxon England.2) Ælfric was later appointed to the abbacy at Eynsham, also in Wessex, and while he lived he was sought out by the best educated and most influential men in the country to explain doctrine and write subsequent texts and translations.3) Elaine Treharne shows that more than one hundred years after the Norman Conquest (1066), after the official language of the English courts had been French for many generations and parlance was changing from Old English into Middle English, Ælfric’s homilies were still read and distributed in English. Moreover, Aaron Kleist points out that in the sixteenth century, in the service of Henry VIII, Matthew Parker used CH as a “historical precedent” for an English church that differed from the Catholic Church (312).

    Textual Community and Linguistic Distance in Early England by Emily Elisabeth Butler A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Emily Elisabeth Butler 2010 Textual Community and Linguistic Distance in Early England Emily Elisabeth Butler Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2010 Abstract This dissertation examines the function of textual communities in England from the early Middle Ages until the early modern period, exploring the ways in which cultures and communities are formed through textual activities other than writing itself. I open by discussing the characteristics of a textual community in order to establish a new understanding of the term. I argue that a textual community is fundamentally based on activity carried out in books and that perceptions of linguistic distance stimulate this activity. Chapter 1 investigates Bede (c. 673–735) and his interest in multilingualism, coupled with his exploration of the boundaries between the written and spoken forms of English. Picking up on an element of Bede‘s work, I argue in Chapter 2 that Alfred (r. 871–899) and his grandson Æthelstan (r. 924/5–939) found new ways to make textuality the defining quality of the emerging West Saxon kingdom. In Chapter 3, I focus on the intralingual distance in the textual community surrounding the works of Ælfric (c. 950–1010) and Wulfstan (d. 1023). I also discuss the role of contemporary or near- contemporary manuscript use in forming a textual community at the intersection of ecclesiastical and political power.

Library, though it possesses many interesting rarities amongst the printed books, is chiefly known for the magnificent collection of manuscripts, accumulated by Arch- http://library.oxfordjournals.org/ bishop Matthew Parker and bequeathed by him to the House, which he had ruled as Master for nine years. Of these probably the oldest is No. 304, Juvencus (Historic Evangelica), which may be assigned to the latter part of the sixth century; but by far the most notable is a copy of the Four Gospels (No. 286), which a not-unreasonable tradition asserts to have been one of the volumes that Pope Gregory the Great sent from Rome for the use of St. Augustine of Canterbury. With this, till lately, was grouped No. 197, but a careful examination enables us to decide at The University of British Colombia Library on June 18, 2015 that this latter book (a fragment of St. John's Gospel) must have been written nearly a century later either at Lindisfarne or perhaps at Dublin. In this class our Library is still growing. In chronicles also we are rich; of these two (Nos. 16 and 26) were composed, written, and illustrated at St. Albans Abbey, immediately under the direction of Matthew Paris, and were corrected by his own hand; his reputation, even in his life- time, was so high that by special command of the Sovereign an honourable place was assigned to him at the coronation of Henry III., May 17th, 1220, in order that he might write a full account of the ceremony.

  • A Scholar and His Saints. Examining the Art of Hagiographical Writing of Gerald of Wales
    UNIVERSITY The life of Giraldus Cambrensis / Gerald of Wales (c.1146 – c.1223) represents many PRESS facets of the Middle Ages: he was raised in a frontier society, he was educated in Paris, he worked for the kings of England and he unsuccessfully tried to climb the ecclesiastical ladder. He travelled widely, he met many high-ranking persons, and he wrote books in which he included more than one (amusing) anecdote about many persons. Up to this day, scholars have devoted a different degree of attention to Giraldus’ works: his ethnographical and historiographical works have been studied thoroughly, whereas his hagiographical writing has been left largely unexamined. This observation is quite surprising, because Giraldus’ talent as a hagiographer has been acknowledged long ago. Scholars have already examined Giraldus’ saints’ lives independently, but an interpretation of his whole hagiographical œuvre is still a desideratum. This thesis proposed to fill this gap by following two major research questions. First of all, this thesis examined the particular way in which Giraldus depicted each saint. Furthermore, it explained why Giraldus chose / preferred a certain depiction of a FAU Studien aus der Philosophischen Fakultät 17 particular saint. Overall, an examination of the hagiographical art of writing of Giraldus Cambrensis offered insight into the way hagiography was considered by authors and commissioners and how this art was practiced during the twelfth and thirteenth century. John Foxe believed When writing these words in 1570 against monastic chroniclers, had `other that he had now told the full, `vntold' story. Foxe's history revealed the halfe', by examining a diverse collection of manuscripts and printed books through a largely specific interpretative and methodological interrogation. He had achieved these aims through the support offered by Matthew Parker. As the previous two chapters have indicated many of the manuscripts Parker provided formed a new and, for Foxe, unchallengeable basis for his depiction of past events and his argument. Manuscript copies of chronicles compiled by John Brompton, Gervase of Canterbury, Matthew Paris, Walter of Guisborough and Thomas Walsingham were granted clear priority over other sources at particular points in Foxe's narrative; other manuscripts such as the Annals compiled by Nicholas Trivet and the Flores Historiarum attributed to Matthew of Westminster provided a supporting range of evidence vital to authenticating the overarching argument. Individual extracts such as King Edgar's oration, Augustine's questions to Pope Gregory the Great and the anti-fraternal tract Jack Upland, provided additional flavour and colour.
