Five REVEREND HAROLD 0. SMALL, S.J.

You are a priest, a man of prayer and thoughtfulness, a man who has sacrificed gladly for others, a bridge be- tween your fellow men and God. Your life has exemplified brotherly care and commitment to spiritual leader- ship. As you now lead through retreats, you share those Christian values and vision without which there can be no justice, and no peace. Your life manifests the value of the individual in the eyes of God.

In your more than 40 year association with Seattle University, you have helped to shape the University's direc- tion and mission as it has changed to meet the needs of the community. You have served as a teacher, as Dean of Seattle College, as the last President of Seattle College, and as the Spiritual Director of the Jesuit faculty.

Your career has involved positions of national and world-wide responsibility. As Provincial, and later as Tertian Director of the Oregon Province, you have led the Jesuit community both spiritually, and through the direction of the Order's educational and parish work. During your fifteen years as Assistant to the General of the Society in Rome, you have assisted in the governance of all Jesuit institutions and Jesuits in the United States and throughout the world.

As Assistant to the General during the period when the Documents of Vatican II were forged, you helped to es- tablish a new period of growth and transformation in the Church and the . In your travels to every Jesuit institution in the United States and practically every American Jesuit institution throughout the world, you have helped the Order successfully integrate the new directions of Vatican II.

In your present apostolate directing retreats, you continue to minister to the needs of both lay and religious com- munities, helping to create the strong foundation of Christian values essential to justice and peace throughout the world. In your ministry to your fellow Jesuits, you are a continuing source of strength and comfort.

We at Seattle University are sincerely grateful for your presence here with us once again, and for your many years of service and guidance in the Society of Jesus.

Upon Father Harold Small, Seattle University is proud to confer the degree, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.

MRS. THEILINE McGEE PIGOTT McCONE

You have given of yourself unstintingly for more than fifty years, sharing your time and talents to ensure the preservation of our nation's historical landmarks, cultural values, and educational opportunities.

You have served on the Board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation since 1968. A strong supporter of cultural activities, you have given of your time and energy as a Board Member of the National Symphony, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Los Angeles Symphony, the Seattle Symphony and the Seattle Opera.

Through your more than 20 year association with Seattle University, you have helped to provide the youth of the Pacific Northwest with top quality educational opportunities.

Mother of six children, thirty-four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, you still have found time to serve the Seattle Children's Home, the Lighthouse for the Blind, the Arboretum Foundation, and the Children's Orthopedic Hospital.

Seattle University is honored to salute you, Theiline McCone, for your dedication and many contributions to our community and to the nation.

Upon Theiline McCone, humanitarian and civic leader, Seattle University proudly confers the degree, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Six FRANK HERBERT

You are a creator and a visionary, sharing, through the written word, new possibilities for the future of humankind.

Where others have looked and seen only the myriad of problems in our increasingly complex world, you have seen what the future can and should hold—alternative energy sources, the colonization of space, a limitless frontier.

In addition to schooling in Tacoma and at the University of Washington, you have done special research in psychology, and lands, ecology, alternative energies, education and photography.

Your career has included more than thirty years as a newspaper editor and reporter in California, Oregon and Washington. You started the Higher Education Department at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and have been ac- tive as a teacher for gifted students through your work at the Centrum Foundation, and as a lecturer for English and writing classes throughout the state.

Concern for our planet and for our future has been a hallmark of your life, and you have given unstintingly of your time and your talents to conquer the problems which challenge mankind.

We at Seattle University are sincerely grateful for your example of commitment and dedication to a better future, and especially for your faith in our ability to make it happen.

Seattle University is proud to confer upon you the degree, Doctor of Humanities, honoris causa.

THE SEATTLE UNIVERSITY MACE Originally the mace was a "heavy staff, often spiked, used especially in the Middle Ages for breaking armor. Hence, a club used as a weapon." Later it became a "staff borne by or carried before a dignitary as an ensign of his authority." Usually ceremonial maces retained some trace of their war-like ancestry with the spikes giving way to precious metal and jewels. The Seattle University mace, designed by Robert Matthiesen, departs from this particular tradition. From a round base bearing the Great Seal of the State of Washington the sculptured rosewood flares gracefully into an in- verted trihedron, symbolic of the ultimate source of all authority. The sweep of wood gives the impression of flight, a reference at once to the community the University serves and the age in which we live. The University seal with ar- morial bearing removed is mounted on the triangular end surface. On the vertical face are the words: Seattlenis . . . Universitas ... Anno Domini 1891 . . . incised in gold. The silver emblems further down symbolize the triality of creature man: body, mind and spirit. Robert Stanton sculpted the rosewood from a laminated block, and Reinhold Eichhorn crafted the metal and enamel.

THE PRESIDENTIAL MEDALLION The presidential medallion is the badge of office worn by the University president on formal academic occasions. The medallion is triangular, carrying forward the motif of the University mace, and symbolizing both the Triune God and the triality of man, creature of body, mind and spirit. The front surface of the medallion is of etched bronze and carries elements of the University seal. At the top are the letters IHS, drawn from the Greek spelling of Jesus and especially appropriate to the University which is conducted by the Society of Jesus. The American eagle and shield signify the relationship of the University to the nation it serves. Two wolves hovering over a large pot symbolize the generosity of the house of Loyola, family of the founder of the Society of Jesus, and seven diagonal stripes indicate awards for valor made to the family. In the lower portion, the crescent is the sign of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the University; the evergreen tree represents the state in which it is located; and the tepee commemorates Chief Seattle, whose name the University and the city in which it is located both bear. The reverse side of the medallion is of sterling silver and is engraved with the name of the University in Latin and the date of its founding.

Twenty- Three Academic Costume The caps, gowns and hoods universally worn by faculties and candidates for degrees at graduating exercises are a costume dating back to the Twelfth Century. In medieval days the scholars were clerics; the buildings were cold; capes and hoods were required for warmth, the robes of scholars were similar to the cassocks of the clerics. In the course of years of development, caps with tassels have replaced capes for the head covering, the hooded cape has been modified into the present hood, and the gowns with long flowing sleeves have been redesigned to indicate the character of the degree of the wearer. In 1893, a student movement in the United States endorsed academic apparel as overcoming awkwardness and difference in dress at graduation exercises and resulted in a standardization of academic costume in this country.

The Intercollegiate Code, adopted in 1895, recognizes three styles of gowns: a bachelor's gown, a master's gown, and a doctor's gown. The differences in these gowns are mainly in the cut and shape of the sleeves and in the trimming. Hoods are also recognized for each of the above degrees and vary in shape, size and length. The shell of the hood matches the black material of the gown, and is lined with the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The velvet bordering of the hood is of a color indicative of the field of learning to which the degree pertains. The Ox- ford cap, proper for all degrees, is worn both indoors and outdoors with academic costume. The tassel, worn over the left eye once the degree is conferred, is also symbolic of the degree and conforms to the code of colors for hood trim- ming. Prior to the actual conferring of the degree the tassel is worn over the right eye. Holders of doctor's degrees are entitled to wear a gold tassel. The tassel of a bachelor's degree indicates the field in which the degree is granted. The color for each field of learning follows:

Arts, Letters and Humanities White Library Science Lemon Business Olive Drab Medicine Green Dentistry Lilac Music Pink Economics Copper Nursing Apricot Education Ice Blue Philosophy Dark Blue Engineering Orange Physical Education Sage Green Fine Arts Brown Public Affairs Peacock Blue Journalism Crimson Science Golden Yellow Laws Purple Theology and Divinity Scarlet
