Upon the retirement of Bishop Pierre DuMaine on November 27, 1999, Bishop Patrick Joseph McGrath became the second Bishop of San Jose. Bishop retired on May 1, 2019, and was succeeded by his Coadjutor, Bishop Oscar Cantú. 8 HISTORY OF THE DIOCESE OF SAN JOSE The Diocese of San Jose is coterminous with the boundaries of Santa Clara County, which includes 15 cities/townships and some unincorporated areas under county jurisdiction. The Diocese of San Jose belongs to the Ecclesiastical Province of San Francisco, consisting of the Metropolitan See of the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Dioceses of Honolulu, Las Vegas, Oakland, Reno, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and Stockton. Beginning with the famous California missions, more than two centuries of Catholic life prepared Santa Clara County for its own diocese. Blessed Junipero Serra founded the first of California's historic Franciscan missions, San Diego de Alcala, in 1769. In 1777, the Franciscan Fathers founded Mission Santa Clara de Asis, which later became Saint Clare Parish. Before his death at San Carlos Borromeo Mission, Carmel, in 1784, Father Serra established eight more missions and laid the groundwork for the whole chain of 21 missions. Upper California was part of the Diocese of Sonora, Mexico, during the early days and, after 1840, it was under Bishop Francisco Garcia Diego, the first bishop of Alta and Baja (Upper and Lower) California. Spanish Dominican Joseph Sadoc Alemany, OP, was bishop of Monterey when it was established in 1850, then became Archbishop of San Francisco when it was created in 1853. At that time dioceses were not divided along county lines; Gilroy and Morgan Hill remained part of the Diocese of Monterey-Los Angeles. In 1922, Rome accepted county lines as diocesan boundaries, and Gilroy and Morgan Hill became part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. When the dioceses of Oakland, Santa Rosa and Stockton were divided from the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1962, Santa Clara County remained part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Archbishop John R. Quinn implemented the final plans for the erection of the new Diocese of San Jose, and Santa Clara County was established as the Diocese of San Jose by Pope John Paul II on January 27, 1981. Most Rev. Pierre DuMaine was named as the first bishop of the Diocese of San Jose, and Saint Patrick Church in San Jose was named the Cathedral. On the evening of March 18, 1981, during the solemn celebration of the First Vespers of the Feast of Saint Joseph, Archbishop Pio Laghi, Apostolic Delegate to the Church in the United States, and Archbishop Quinn, the Metropolitan, formally installed the first bishop of the new church and canonically erected the Diocese. In 1987, historic Saint Joseph Church was designated the Cathedral to replace the proto-cathedral, Saint Patrick Church. After extensive renovation, Saint Joseph Church was dedicated as a Cathedral in 1990. In 1995, Pope John Paul II designated the cathedral as a Minor Basilica and it became the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Joseph.

  • Confirmation
CONFIRMATION December 1, 2020 Dear Parents and Students, You have elected to register your son/daughter for the St. Agnes Christian Formation program this year. When registering your son/daughter it is stated that our Confirmation program is a two-year program. This program challenges him or her to grow in his or her understanding of the Catholic faith and his or her personal relationship with God. There are several points to make you aware of in preparation for Confirmation (which starts in 8th grade with the student receiving the Sacrament with the completion of 9th grade studies) (due to pandemic this school year completion of 10th grade)). Successful completion of the curriculum includes once a month catechesis, service to others, and spending time with God in prayer. The greatest form of prayer is the celebration of the Mass. As Catholics, we are encouraged to attend weekly Mass in order to recognize God’s love more fully in the Word and Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. While the pandemic poses a particular challenge at this time, students and their families are highly encouraged to either attend weekly Mass in person (Precautions are in place to ensure everyone’s safety) or to seek out an online Mass to encourage growth in love for Christ in preparation for Confirmation. Below is a list of other expectations. Remember, these “assignments” are designed to support our students in their desire to know, love, and serve our wonderful God while helping to prepare them for the reception of the Sacrament. This process for being Confirmed in the Spirit is a commitment from the parish, support from parents, and a commitment from the student that wishes to be Confirmed.

Volume 9 Issue 2 December 2020 Padre Pio Fraternity Brothers and Sisters of St. Francis Region Fraternity On Christmas Day we are reminded that God, through the Incarnation, chose to live in fraternity with all of us, as unworthy as we may be. As Secular Franciscans we are called to imitate Our Lord, in what ways we can, through our fraternity with one another. The COVID-19 epidemic has, through most of 2020, been a disruption to our meeting one another face-to-face, and shall continue to be so on December 25. But Christ’s fraternity with us had also been met by many challenges, without His desire for such bonds having ever been dulled, and we remain called, as always, to imitate Him. Although we will continue resorting to phone calls and Zoom meetings, rather than hugging and sitting at tables with one another, for some months more, the bonds of that fraternity which began on Christmas Day, an event which can never be undone, very much remain. We will always have one another to call our brothers and sisters, no matter what challenges shape our world. We still have one another to wish a very Merry Christmas! • “A Jesuit Influence in the Fine and Performing Arts: Creighton Universityʼs Contribution to American Jesuit University Education Since 1964.”
“A Jesuit Influence in the Fine and Performing Arts: Creighton Universityʼs Contribution to American Jesuit University Education since 1964.” A. Introductory Background Particularly in the era of post-Vatican II Catholic Church renewal and aggiornamento since the mid-1960ʼs, Jesuit initiatives in university education reflected the Churchʼs rediscovery of its sacramental imagination and its connection with the fine and performing and literary arts. These movements included, to name a few: a. the revision of the sacred liturgy to be more accessible and transparent to the worshipping community, b. prayer and music in the vernacular language, c. a revised theology of grace, creation, and Incarnation and the Holy Spirit at work in the body of the faithtul, d. metaphorical and analogical expression (music, drama, architecture, the visual and poetic language arts), e. inculturation of the gospel preaching and teaching, f. fresh approaches to Holy Scripture, g. the charismatic renewal h. expression of the sacred and mystical in creative literature and story i. and study of Ignatian sources, spirituality, and in particular The Spiritual Exercises. To a certain extent, the rediscovery of the arts in Jesuit education was a return to the pre-eminence of Jesuit education in the arts before the Suppression of the Society of Jesus (1777-1814) when Jesuit colleges and universities were distinguished by their attention to the arts and architecture, painting, sculpture, music, theater, dance and poetry1 as methods for inculturation of the gospel in word and performance2. The renewed awareness of the arts and education in the arts accompanied the dramatic changes in culture that occurred in the United States and worldwide during the 1960ʼs.
