Why Journalism Matters A Media Standards Trust series Lionel Barber, editor of the Financial Times The British Academy, Wednesday 15 th July These are the best of times and the worst of times if you happen to be a journalist, especially if you are a business journalist. The best, because our profession has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to report, analyse and comment on the most serious financial crisis since the Great Crash of 1929. The worst of times, because the news business is suffering from the cyclical shock of a deep recession and the structural change driven by the internet revolution. This twin shock has led to a loss of nerve in some quarters, particularly in the newspaper industry. Last week, during a trip to Colorado and Silicon Valley, I was peppered with questions about the health of the Financial Times . The FT was in the pink, I replied, to some surprise. A distinguished New York Times reporter remained unconvinced. “We’re all in the same boat,” he said,”but at least we’re all going down together.” My task tonight is not to preside over a wake, but to make the case for journalism, to explain why a free press and media have a vital role to play in an open democratic society. I would also like to offer some pointers for the future, highlighting the challenges facing what we now call the mainstream media and making some modest suggestions on how good journalism can not only survive but thrive in the digital age. Let me begin on a personal note. -

BBC Trust 180 Great Portland Street, London W1W 5QZ 25 January 2010 Dear sir/madam We are writing in relation to an item that appeared on the BBC news website on 17 December ‘Jewish man jeered at SOAS university debate’ (appendix 1). Along with many other people we contacted the BBC and a revised version appeared late the following day (appendix 2) While we were pleased that a revised version appeared, the BBC has never stated publically that the original version contained many serious errors it continues to circulate on the Internet. Without a clear BBC disavowal it is far more difficult to challenge those who continue to misuse the original as evidence of BBC endorsement of patently false allegations. As joint organisers of the meeting we therefore ask the BBC to make a public statement that the original story contains multiple errors of fact and make unjustifiable claims and is a piece of journalism of which falls far short of their expected standards. This will enable us and the BBC to contest reproduction of the article or uncritical reference to it. In response to our initial complaint we received a reply from Hugh Berlyn, Editor, BBC News and Sports Interactive (see appendix 3). We contacted Mr Berlyn to express our continuing concerns (see appendix 4). However Mr Berlyn replied on 20 January only to say, “Thank you for your email. I have nothing further to add to me earlier response.” He gave us no further guidance on how to pursue our complaint. When we asked for details of the next step he directed us not to the trust not to the Editorial Complaints Unit at White City. -

Hosts Lionel Barber Editor Financial Times Lionel Barber is the editor of the Financial Times. Since his appointment in November 2005, the FT has been pioneering the concept of the integrated newsroom, where reporters and editors work seamlessly across print and digital formats. During Lionel’s tenure, the FT has won numerous global awards for its quality journalism, including three newspaper of the year awards (2008), which recognised the FT’s role ‘as a 21st century news organisation’. As editor, Lionel has interviewed many of the world’s leaders in business and politics including: President Barack Obama, Premier Wen Jiabao of China, President-elect Demetri Medvedev of Russia, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa. Lionel began his career in journalism in 1978 as a reporter for The Scotsman. He moved to The Sunday Times as a business correspondent in 1981. He joined the FT in 1985 as a business reporter. In 1986, he became Washington correspondent before being appointed Brussels bureau chief in 1992. He served as the news editor from 1998-2000 before taking charge of the continental European edition between 2000 and 2002, when he became US managing editor in charge of the FT’s American editorial operations. In 2001, Lionel was invited to brief George W. Bush on European affairs ahead of the president’s inaugural mission to Europe. In the same year, European Voice named him one of the 50 most influential personalities in Europe. Lionel has co-written several books and has lectured widely on US foreign policy, transatlantic relations, European security and monetary union in the US and Europe. -

Assessing religion, political engagement and party affiliation as moderating influences on framing effects. Sean Clarke Word Count: 14,804 Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of MA Political Communication 3rd September 2018 I confirm that this dissertation is entirely my own work. 1 Abstract One of the key processes through which media effects can occur is media framing. Many studies in the past have explored the effects of media framing on audiences, showing that frames can be very effective at influencing the attitudes of those exposed to the frame. Furthermore, there have been numerous studies that examine the factors which may influence the effectiveness of news frames. These can come from the frames themselves – such as the credibility of the news source or the framing techniques used – or at audience level. This study is primarily interested in three audience- level factors that might influence framing effects, that of political engagement, political affiliation and religious identity. With these three variables being tested, this study aims to answer the question as to the effect of personal identity and personal politics on media framing. Using the issue of antisemitism in the Labour Party, an issue that combines religion and party politics, this study aims to test the attitudes of participants when exposed to two different news frames, with political engagement, political affiliation and religion acting as layered independent variables. To do this, an experimental research design using an A/B random assignment test will be used to survey respondents and collect statistical data fit for analysis. -

The article draws on thematic analysis of content from counter-jihad websites and interviews with movement activists, sympathizers and opponents, in order to characterize the counter-jihad’s organizational infrastructure and political discourse and to theorize its relationship to fascism and other far-right tendencies. Although the political discourses of the counter-jihad, Trumpian Republicanism and the avowedly racist “Alt-Right” are not identical, I argue that all three tendencies share a common, counterrevolutionary temporal structure. -

REGISTER OF INTERESTS OF MEMBERS’ SECRETARIES AND RESEARCH ASSISTANTS (As at 30 May 2013) INTRODUCTION Purpose and Form of the Register In accordance with Resolutions made by the House of Commons on 17 December 1985 and 28 June 1993, holders of photo-identity passes as Members’ secretaries or research assistants are in essence required to register: • Any occupation or employment for which they receive over £330 from the same source in the course of a calendar year, if that occupation or employment is in any way advantaged by the privileged access to Parliament afforded by their pass. • Any gift (eg: jewellery) or benefit (eg: hospitality, services or facilities) they receive in the course of a calendar year, if the value of the gift or benefit exceeds £330 and if it in any way relates to or arises from their work in Parliament. In Section 1 of the Register entries are listed alphabetically according to the staff member’s surname. Section 2 contains exactly the same information but entries are instead listed according to the sponsoring Member’s name. Administration of the Register The Register is compiled and maintained by the Office of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards. Anyone whose details are entered on the Register is required to notify that office of any change in their registrable interests within 28 days of such a change arising. An updated edition of the Register is usually published every 4-6 weeks when the House is sitting. Changes to the rules governing the Register are determined by the Committee on Standards, although where such changes are substantial they are put by the Committee to the House for approval before being implemented. -

Response to The BBC’s Editorial Guidelines Consultation 1. Introduction 1.1. The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB), seeks to represents the common interest of the UK’s diverse Muslim communities. Founded in 1997, it is the largest umbrella body of its kind in the UK with over 500 affiliates. It is pledged to work for the common good of society as a whole. A democratic body underpinned by a constitution, the Muslim Council of Britain’s affiliate base reflects the diversity of Muslims in the UK, being made up of hundreds of mosques, educational and charitable bodies, cultural and relief agencies and women and youth groups and associations across the UK from a range of ethnic, geographical and theological backgrounds and traditions. 1.2. The MCB has launched a Centre for Media Monitoring (CfMM), whose goal is to promote fair and responsible reporting of Muslims and Islam through constructive engagement. This submission is on behalf of the CfMM. 1.3. The BBC is a public service broadcaster with the important core mission of informing, educating and entertaining, and aims to be a trusted guide for everyone. Two of its five public purposes are to “provide impartial news and information to help people understand and engage with the world around them” and to “reflect, represent and serve the diverse communities of all of the United Kingdom’s nations and regions…” (Section 1, Purposes 1 and 4) – purposes that are relevant to this submission and cited in the Draft Guidelines. 1.4. There is an expectation that it continues to aspire to highest standards with respect to independence, impartiality and integrity. -
