Frühere Begegnungen • Die beiden Teams haben bislang zehn Pflichtspiele auf U21-Ebene bestritten, dabei feierte Deutschland zwei Siege und England vier Erfolge. • Von den sechs Begegnungen in Qualifikationen zur U21-EURO hat England keine einzige verloren, es gab drei Siege und drei Unentschieden. • Im Vorfeld der Endrunde 2007 feierte England in den Play-offs einen 3:0-Sieg nach Hin- und Rückspiel. Leighton Baines traf zum 1:0-Hinspielsieg für England, im Rückspiel in Deutschland machte Theo Walcott mit einem Doppelpack alles klar. • Bei Endrunden hat allerdings Deutschland die bessere Bilanz vorzuweisen. Von vier Duellen konnten die DFB- Junioren zwei gewinnen, England nur eines. • Die letzte Begegnung bei einem Turnier gab es 2009 im Finale im schwedischen Malmö. Gonzalo Castro (23.), Mesut Özil (48.) und Sandro Wagner (79., 84.) schossen die Truppe von Horst Hrubesch zu einem 4:0-Sieg. • Die Aufstellungen bei dieser Partie am 29. Juni 2009 lauteten: England: Loach; Cranie (79. Gardner), Richards, Onuoha (46. Mancienne), Gibbs; Cattermole, Muamba (78. Rodwell), Noble; Milner, Johnson; Walcott Deutschland: Neuer; Beck, Höwedes, Boateng, Boenisch; Hummels (83. Aogo); Johnson (69. Schwaab), Castro, Khedira, Özil (89. Schmelzer); Wagner • Zuvor waren sich die beiden Teams in Schweden bereits in der Gruppenphase begegnet, die Partie endete 1:1. • England setzte sich 1982 im Finale nach Hin- und Rückspiel mit 5:4 durch. Nach einem 3:1-Sieg an der Bramall Lane Ende September durfte England nach dem Rückspiel in Bremen Mitte Oktober jubeln, obwohl Pierre Littbarski mit einem Dreierpack für den 3:2-Sieg von Deutschland gesorgt hatte. • Das bislang letzte Aufeinandertreffen gab es am 24. März dieses Jahres in einem Freundschaftsspiel in Wiesbaden, als Nadiem Amiri in der 23. Minute das goldene Tor zu Deutschlands 1:0-Sieg markierte. • Die Aufstellungen bei dieser Partie: Deutschland: Pollersbeck (46. Schwäbe); Jung, Stark, Kempf; Weiser (39. Toljan), Amiri (46. Öztunali), Ginter, Arnold (68. Philipp), Gerhardt; Meyer (68. Haberer), Selke (86. Kehrer) England: Pickford; Holgate, Stephens, Mawson, Chilwell; Chalobah, Baker; Gray (58. Loftus-Cheek), Murphy, Winks (72. Swift); Abraham • Acht Spieler dieser deutschen Startelf standen auch bei der Endrunde in Polen in allen Partien von Beginn an auf dem Platz. Gideon Jung wurde in allen drei Spielen eingewechselt, Amiri zweimal. Von dieser Mannschaft ist lediglich Matthias Ginter nicht bei der Endrunde dabei. Bei England sind zehn von 13 Akteuren, die an diesem Abend gespielt haben, in Polen dabei. Hintergrund England • England will nach den Erfolgen von 1982 und 1984 zum dritten Mal U21-Europameister werden. • England steht auf U21-Ebene zum neunten Mal im Halbfinale, ihre Bilanz: 3 Siege, 5 Niederlagen. • Bei den letzten drei U21-Europameisterschaften ist England immer in der Gruppenphase ausgeschieden, diesmal zog man als Sieger der Gruppe A ins Halbfinale ein. Gegen Schweden gab es ein 0:0, ehe Siege gegen die Slowakei (2:1) und Polen (3:0) folgten. Deutschland • Die DFB-Junioren konnten den U21-Titel erst einmal holen, als sie im Finale 2009 gegen England triumphierten. • Deutschland verlor 2015 im Halbfinale mit 0:5 gegen Portugal. Bislang standen die DFB-Junioren dreimal in der Vorschlussrunde, zweimal konnten sie gewinnen - unter anderem 1982 als Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die DDR stand zweimal im Halbfinale, 1978 und 1980, und konnte beide gewinnen. • Deutschland hat an fünf der letzten sieben Turniere teilgenommen, überstand jedoch nur 2009 und 2015 die Gruppenphase. 4 England - Germany Dienstag 27 Juni 2017 - 18.00CET (18.00 Ortszeit) Pressemappe Tychy Stadium, Tychy • Die DFB-Auswahl erreichte das Halbfinale als bester Gruppenzweiter, nachdem sie in der Gruppe C Italien den Vortritt lassen musste. Nach Siegen gegen die Tschechische Republik (2:0) und Dänemark (3:0) verlor man mit 0:1 gegen die Azzurrini. Sonstiges • Stefan Kuntz bestritt nur ein einziges Länderspiel gegen England, aber das war wahrscheinlich das größte Spiel seiner Karriere. Im Halbfinale der EURO '96 geriet Deutschland durch Alan Shearer schon in der dritten Minute in Rückstand, Kuntz markierte den Ausgleich (16.). Im Elfmeterschießen konnte er verwandeln und hatte so einen großen Anteil am Finaleinzug der DFB-Elf. • Mahmoud Dahoud und der eingewechselte Amiri spielten für die deutsche U19, als es im September 2014 in einem Testspiel ein 1:1-Unentschieden gegen England mit Ben Chilwell, Angus Gunn und dem eingewechselten Demarai Gray gab. • Yannick Gerhardt, Odisseas Vlachodimos und Dominik Kohr standen von Beginn an auf dem Platz, als Deutschlands U19 im September 2012 in Lübeck einen 3:1-Sieg gegen England feierte. Jordan Pickford, Nathaniel Chalobah und James Ward-Prowse spielten für die Engländer, Nathan Redmond wurde eingewechselt. • Vlachodimos und Mitchell Weiser feierten mit Deutschland im Viertelfinale der FIFA-U17-Weltmeisterschaft im Juli 2011 einen 3:2-Sieg gegen England mit Pickford, Chalobah und dem eingewechselten Redmond. • Aidy Boothroyd war Englands U19-Trainer bei einem 3:2-Testspielsieg gegen Deutschland im September 2015. Tammy Abraham wurde bei England eingewechselt. • Serge Gnabry stand in Arsenals Startelf, als es im Januar 2014 in der Premier League ein 2:2-Unentschieden gegen Southampton gab; Ward-Prowse wurde bei den Saints eingewechselt. Die Trainer Aidy Bothroyd, England Boothroyd spielte als Verteidiger in unterklassigen Ligen, die längste Zeit verbrachte er bei Mansfield Town. 1998 wechselte er auf die Trainerbank bei den Junioren von Peterborough. Anschließend trainierte er in der Jugend von Norwich City und West Bromwich Albion, ehe er 2004 die erste Mannschaft von Leeds United übernahm. Ein Jahr später wurde Boothroyd mit 34 Jahren Trainer von Watford. Er führte die Hornets gleich in seiner ersten Saison (2005/06) in die Premier League, doch 2008 verließ er den Klub, als dieser wieder in der Championship spielte. Anschließend folgten kurze Abschnitte bei Colchester United, Coventry City und von 2011 bis 2013 bei Northampton Town. Im Februar 2014 wechselte er in den Juniorenbereich von England, nach dem Wechsel von Gareth Southgate zur A-Nationalmannschaft wurde er im Oktober 2016 zum Trainer der U21. Stefan Kuntz, Deutschland Als Spieler war Kuntz Leistungsträger bei all seinen Stationen. Die erfolgreichste Zeit erlebte er in seinen sechs Jahren bei Kaiserslautern, wo er 1990 den DFB-Pokal und ein Jahr später die deutsche Meisterschaft gewann. Außerdem wurde er 1991 zu Deutschlands Fußballer des Jahres gewählt. Der zweimalige Bundesliga- Torschützenkönig trug vier Jahre lang das Trikot der A-Nationalmannschaft und holte bei der EURO '96 den Titel. Seine Trainerkarriere begann Kuntz im Amateurbereich, später trainierte er drei Vereine in der 2. Bundesliga, ehe er ins Management wechselte. Nach Stationen bei Koblenz und Bochum kehrte er nach Kaiserslautern zurück und war dort acht Jahre lang Vorstandsvorsitzender, ehe er im August 2016 als Nachfolger von Horst Hrubesch die U21 übernahm.

Passing is an important and crucial aspect of winning a soccer match. It plays a big role in important decisions made by managers and owners when buying/selling players, picking offensive/defensive strategies and defining a style of play. In this article we show how to support these decisions by analyzing the unique passing behaviors (motifs) of players and teams from the patterns in their passing-possession data. We analyze individual players as well as teams based on the diversity and frequency of their involvement in different motifs. We gather passing and possession data from 4 seasons (2012–15) of 6 big European leagues with 8219 matches, 3532 unique players and 155 unique teams and apply the network motif concept to study the patterns. By introducing an expected goals model we build on the motif concept to measure the effectiveness of styles of play. We also make use of a novel way to represent the motif data (the radar graph) to make comparisons between players and teams across multiple seasons. We show how this analysis can support scouting for players and managers, identifying unique players/teams, finding relationships between position and style and in finding a suitable replacement for La Computadora. 1.     PROLOOG “Arnhem is geen voetbalstad.” “Vitesse is haar ziel kwijt.” Ach, we zijn wel wat gewend als supporter van geel-zwart. Er zijn al- lerlei voor- en tegenargumenten in te brengen. Ik hou het liever bij de feiten: 125 jaar Vitesse. Een traditieclub dus, de op een na oudste in het Nederlandse profvoetballandschap, heel vroe- ger lange tijd de beste van het oosten. Op het laatste moment het betaald voetbal ingestapt en daar sinds jaar en dag vaak de nummer één van Gelderland. De eerste Nederlandse profclub in buitenlandse handen. Duizenden supporters, honderden spelers en andere betrokkenen door de geschiedenis heen, ruim 4.500 wedstrijden, van 1892 tot nu. In dit boek wordt op elke kalenderdag een wedstrijd uit die club- historie gekoppeld aan interessante wapenfeiten, memorabele spelers of andere opmerkelijke gebeurtenissen. De wedstrijden dienen vooral als kapstok om de geschiedenis van Vitesse te belichten. Geen boek vol wedstrijdverslagen dus, al ontbreken prachtige, verrassende of ontroerende overwinningen natuur- lijk niet. Bij elk bijzonder – maar soms ook nietszeggend – duel lees je meer over een seizoen, de levensloop van een opvallen- de Vitessenaar of een mijlpaal van de club, aangevuld met veel uniek beeldmateriaal: 366 verhalen, elke dag Vitesse.* VITESSE Toch zal je ook tevergeefs zoeken naar sommige historische voetbalfeiten. Zoals op 19 mei, de dag van die wel heel grote nederlaag in Amsterdam in 1972, omdat wij veertien jaar- la ter voorzichtig een aanstaande periodetitel vierden. En ooke d “officiële feestdag voor alle Vitessenaren” – vrij naar Maasbert Schouten – is niet gemarkeerd in dit calendarium op de bewuste 16e augustus, want die dag komt John van den Brom aan bod.
