  • Flow Motifs in Soccer: What Can Passing Behavior Tell Us?
Journal of Sports Analytics 5 (2019) 299–311 299 DOI 10.3233/JSA-190290 IOS Press Flow motifs in soccer: What can passing behavior tell us? Joris Bekkers and Shaunak Dabadghao∗ Department of Industrial Engineering, Eindhoven University of Technology, Eindhoven, The Netherlands Abstract. Passing is an important and crucial aspect of winning a soccer match. It plays a big role in important decisions made by managers and owners when buying/selling players, picking offensive/defensive strategies and defining a style of play. In this article we show how to support these decisions by analyzing the unique passing behaviors (motifs) of players and teams from the patterns in their passing-possession data. We analyze individual players as well as teams based on the diversity and frequency of their involvement in different motifs. We gather passing and possession data from 4 seasons (2012–15) of 6 big European leagues with 8219 matches, 3532 unique players and 155 unique teams and apply the network motif concept to study the patterns. By introducing an expected goals model we build on the motif concept to measure the effectiveness of styles of play. We also make use of a novel way to represent the motif data (the radar graph) to make comparisons between players and teams across multiple seasons. We show how this analysis can support scouting for players and managers, identifying unique players/teams, finding relationships between position and style and in finding a suitable replacement for La Computadora. 1. Introduction these websites. This opens doors to extract a lot of hidden information on player and team behaviour by In today’s world we see an increasing trend in the devising new metrics and studying the data using availability of data.

Editor Notes Alex Everson Welcome to the the first ever online only issue of a new Reading fanzine, The Digestive. This fanzine is here to offer you some light hearted, some deeper, and some maybe downright silly pieces of content for you to get stuck into about our club. In conjunction with @ElmParkRoyals, we are looking to breed a new fan voice, and give the everyday fan the oppurtunity to write about that long forgotten match, their favourite player who everyone else disliked, or perhaps delve into expected goals models at long last. We are looking to try and grow this fanzine from a small acorn in this, the first issue into something regular, with contributors coming from you! The fans, and readers of this zine. If writing about Reading is something you've ever wanted to do, this is your outlet to let people know your thoughts and feelings. This issue comes during our first International break of the season - before a long distance trip to Middlesbrough in mid September. Hopefully, by the time we next connect - Reading will have picked up more points and be moving up the table. Until then, please enjoy the fanzine, and if you are interested in writing, designing covers, or want to just pass a comment, please send @ElmParkRoyals a tweet. Thanks, Alex Everson Thanks to our contributors in this issue Ben Morley Dave Stevens Erik Orrgarde Harrison Mitchell Jordan Cottle Matt Lansley Reading_Deep Tom Lunn August Review Matt Lansley An opening six games in which we have picked up 7 points, can almost be broken down into two sections.

WELL all the players of Dutch football have finished the hard training of the pre-season and the kick-off to a new campaign is here! After the raging success of the Total Dutch Football Top 50 magazine we provided last month, we decided to follow up with a season preview publication. Although the team have previewed all 18 Eredivisie sides inside these pages, this will prove to much more. Inside you will find the management hierarchy for each club, as well as updated squad lists with full squad numbers and date of births. I have provided my thoughts and betting tips on the Eredivisie season ahead while Martijn Hilhorst has give his knowledge of the new Jupiler League campaign to give you a taste for that action. So to quote the front page of this exclusive, free magazine this is... 'Your Definitive Guide to the Dutch Football Season'. Enjoy, Will Burns All transfer and statistical information included in this publication is correct as of August 6th 2015. Will Burns introduces the latest arrivals to the Eredivisie... YOUNG striker Yaya Sanogo joins the Amsterdammers on a season-long loan from Premier League giants Arsenal with a great reputation. However, spending last year at Crystal Palace in another loan deal, the 22-year-old failed to make an impact. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has a good relationship with Dennis Bergkamp and Marc Overmars and has trusted de Godenzonen to improve the youngster in a move and thinks Sanogo could help Ajax on the way: 'I am sure it will be good for Ajax and he has an opportunity to play in the Champions League and that's vital for his experience.'.

  • 125 Jaar Vitesse. Een Traditieclub Dus, De Op Een Ger Lange
PROLOOG “Arnhem is geen voetbalstad.” “Vitesse is haar ziel kwijt.”
