Five StarsBy Brennan DunnAmazing story, worth the buy, one of the best Catwoman stories I've read.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A good read...!By DJ Joe SixpackThis is an entertaining, intelligently written, fast-paced comic, featuring the return of The Catwoman after a self-imposed retirement. The book gives some of her back-story, introducing James Stark, the man who helped train her as a thief, and also includes a side plot with detective Slam Bradley, which intersects with the storyline in the "Catwoman" series written by Ed Brubaker. (The crossover doesn't quite jive with what's going on in that book, where Catwoman has basically gone straight, and has taken Slam in as part of her Scooby gang, but it's okay: Bradley is a great character, and it's nice to see him here as well...)Writer/artist Darwyn Cooke is one of the best storytellers working in comics these days, and this is another fine offering by him... just wish there were more books like it! Recommended.16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A raw and expressive, highly cinematic Catwoman adventure!By Matthew L. MutchmoreCatwoman: Selina's Big Score takes place previous to the events chronicled in the first few issues of the new and revamped DC Comics Catwoman series. It sets the basic premise for Selina's return, but the story stands on its own too.And what a story! Selina needs some major cash to get set up in Gotham again, and finds out about a train loaded with unmarked cash en route to Canada for a drug deal. She contacts an old associate (and old flame) to help her, and together they go after the loot. This would make a fabulous movie--it's what I kept thinking while I was reading it.Darwyn Cooke did an incredible job with the story and art. His art style is raw and expressive--just what the book needed, and what the character of Catwoman demands. And to top off this high quality hardcover edition, are amazing pin-ups by some of the best artists in the business: Mike Allred, Jaimie Hernandez, Adam Hughes, Mike Mignola, Daniel Torres, and Kevin Nowlan--just to name a few.If you're the least bit curious, do yourself a favor and check this book out. You won't be sorry...and check out Catwoman: Dark End of the Street (By Ed Brubaker with art by Darwyn Cooke) for the continuing adventures of Catwoman. Written and illustrated by Eisner-award-winning storyteller Darwyn Cooke (DC: THE NEW FRONTIER), Batman's original femme fatale, Selina Kyle (aka Catwoman) continues her incredible new adventures, walking a tightrope between a life of crime and the road to redemption! Selina's Big Score finds the feline thief presumed dead, cut off from her fortune and desperate to make a lot of money...fast. When she hears about a mob train full of unmarked cash, she assembles a crew of professionals to assist her in taking it down. She needs the money quick but is she ready for the consequences? Searing crime action, delivered in the acclaimed noir style that only a master of the form like Cooke can deliver. From Publishers WeeklyFilled with color, camp and melodrama, Cooke's latest is a feast for fans of Catwoman and comic book crime noir. The book sheds light on the series' recent redesign and on Catwoman's shift from superthief to superhero. Forced to fake her own death and disappear, Selena Kyle (Catwoman's secret identity) now needs cash. In the book's explosive opening, Selena resurrects herself after a failed international heist and returns to Gotham in dire financial straits. Swifty, a pawnbroker buddy, tips her off to a Mafia cash transfer using a Montreal-bound train; they plan a new heist that could mean millions. The job requires Selena to reconnect with Stark, her criminal mentor, love of her life and a man she betrayed long ago. After she reignites the flame between herself and Stark, the two assemble a crew and figure out a way to loot the train, all the while dodging Slam Bradley, a pesky old-school private eye who's figured out that the late Selena Kyle isn't quite dead. Cooke offers a clever and complex narrative, weaving flashbacks to Selena's past with riveting action. Cooke's dialogue is a hoot, witty and impressively humane for an over-the-top hardboiled crime yarn. Hollingsworth's full color illustrations are spectacularly stylish-Catwoman has never been so sexy. His bold line is gestural, suggesting form and mood with a vivid, abbreviated authority that captures Gotham City's dark underworld or Las Vegas's gaudy casino life with impressive command. Whether she's pouting at Stark or jumping from a moving train, the new Catwoman is a sight to behold. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.From School Library JournalAdult/High School-Selina Kyle, better known as Catwoman, is down on her luck. Her last job turned out to be a dud, so she reluctantly returns to Gotham looking for something to put her back on her feet. Chantel, a mob moll in search of a better life, provides her with a lead: a train with $24 million heading north for a heroin deal. Selina rounds up a small gang to assist her, including ex-lover Stark, the man who helped her make the switch from prostitution to grand theft. Selina, Stark, and a P.I. assigned to track down the supposedly dead Ms. Kyle narrate the story. The art has strong lines and dramatic color, with a retro vibe. Violence is handled tastefully and Selina's former profession and Chantel's position are treated obliquely. This is pretty much a straightforward noir caper; in fact, Catwoman only appears in a few panels. The main focus is on the woman behind the mask. Teens who liked Ocean's Eleven or similar movies will get a kick out of this novel.Susan Salpini, Fairfax County Public Schools, VACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.From Library JournalDC's new Catwoman series, featuring a revamp of this Batman villain by writer Ed Brubaker and artist Cooke, has drawn a lot of favorable attention from comics fans. Here, Cooke acts as both writer and artist on a prequel to the new series. Out of money and presumed dead, Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) returns to Gotham City and sets up a daring robbery from the mob-a caper that puts her in touch with her pre-Catwoman past but that doesn't turn out as she intended. Cooke blends the Batman cartoon's style with an edgier sensibility, creating a book with definite crossover appeal to adults and teens. The story's theme of broken trust packs a punch that will keep the reader involved. The trade paperback Catwoman: The Dark End of the Street collects the early issues of the new series, and some events overlap with this volume. While some books in DC's line of $24.95 hardcover graphic novels don't live up to the price, this one is worth it. Recommended, especially for fans of urban superheroes such as Marvel's Daredevil and, of course, Batman.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. Comics Aren’t Just For Fun Anymore: The Practical Use of Comics by TESOL Professionals by David Recine A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in TESOL _________________________________________ Adviser Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date _________________________________________ Graduate Committee Member Date University of Wisconsin-River Falls 2013 Comics, in the form of comic strips, comic books, and single panel cartoons are ubiquitous in classroom materials for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). While comics material is widely accepted as a teaching aid in TESOL, there is relatively little research into why comics are popular as a teaching instrument and how the effectiveness of comics can be maximized in TESOL. This thesis is designed to bridge the gap between conventional wisdom on the use of comics in ESL/EFL instruction and research related to visual aids in learning and language acquisition. The hidden science behind comics use in TESOL is examined to reveal the nature of comics, the psychological impact of the medium on learners, the qualities that make some comics more educational than others, and the most empirically sound ways to use comics in education. The definition of the comics medium itself is explored; characterizations of comics created by TESOL professionals, comic scholars, and psychologists are indexed and analyzed. This definition is followed by a look at the current role of comics in society at large, the teaching community in general, and TESOL specifically. From there, this paper explores the psycholinguistic concepts of construction of meaning and the language faculty.

Although their ascendency points towards European ancestors, and although non-American heroes have been sharing their characteristics for a long time, among them Obelix, Diabolik and many manga characters, the cape and costume genre remains firmly grounded in the United States. It is thus unsurprising that, with a brief exception during the Second World War, super hero narratives should have taken place mostly in the United States (although Metropolis, Superman’s headquarter, was notoriously based on Toronto) or in outer space.

Comics as a Medium dor Inquiry: Urban Students (Re-)Designing Critical Social Worlds Abstract Literacy scholars have argued that curricular remediation marginalizes the dynamic meaning-making practices of urban youth and ignores contemporary definitions of literacy as multimodal, socially situated, and tied to people's identities as members of cultural communities. For this reason, it is imperative that school-based literacy research unsettle status quos by foregrounding the sophisticated practices that urban students enact as a result, and in spite of, the marginalization they manage in educational settings. A hopeful site for honoring the knowledge of urban students is the nexus of alternative learning spaces that have taken on increased significance in ouths'y lives. Many of these spaces focus on young people's engagements with new literacies, multimodalities, the arts, and popular media, taking the stance that students' interests are inherently intellectual. The Cabrini Comics Inquiry Community (CCIC), located in a K-8 Catholic school in South Philadelphia, is one such space.
