artlibraries.net and the Future of Art Bibliography conference (6th artlibraries.net general meeting) Copenhagen, October 9-11, 2014 Host: Danmarks Kunstbibliotek (Danish National Art Library), (www.kunstbib.dk) The conference will take place in the Assembly Hall of Charlottenborg Palace Kongens Nytorf 1, DK-1050 Copenhagen K (adjacent to Danmarks Kunstbibliotek) After the US launch of the new WorldCat-based ‘Art Discovery Group Catalogue’ (http://artlibraries.worldcat.org/) at the ARLIS/NA conference in May 2014 in Washington, the Copenhagen meeting will be the occasion to present and to discuss this new tool extensively in Europe. The project group will give an update on the state of development, including crucial topics such as specialized bibliographical databases to be included, additional webpages providing information on the project and the participating institutions, and the forthcoming new WorldCat interface. The conference shall also be the occasion to discuss the future administration of the Art Discovery Group Catalogue after the end of the project implementation phase in 2015. We expect OCLC representatives to be present. On the other hand, the conference will of course serve to discuss and define the conclusions to be drawn for the international meta catalogue artlibraries.net (www.artlibraries.net), the main question being: Shall artlibraries.net survive in the long run or shall the Art Discovery Group Catalogue replace it eventually? This conference is the sixth in the series of bi-annual international artlibraries.net general conferences and the third (after Lisbon and Paris) to be organized together with the Future of Art Bibliography (FAB) project initiated by the Getty Research Institute.

$UFKLWHFWXUDO Liefooghe, M. 2019. Buildings for Bodies of Work: The Artist Museum After the Death and Return of the Author. Architectural Histories, +LVWRULHV 7(1): 12, pp. 1–13. DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ah.296 RESEARCH ARTICLE Buildings for Bodies of Work: The Artist Museum After the Death and Return of the Author Maarten Liefooghe Critiques of the cult of artists, life-and-work narratives, and the authority of authors over the meaning of their works not only unsettle the conventions of literary and art historical studies. They also challenge the importance of the artist museum and its architecture. Adopting Roland Barthes’ discussions of the ‘death’ and ‘return of the author’ of the late 1960s and early 1970s as a critical lens, this article examines how the architecture of artist museums reflects and contributes to the discursive construction of the resilient figure of the artist-author. To do so, the article compares the cultist make-up of the 19th- century Thorvaldsen Museum-Mausoleum (opened in 1848) with the resolutely work-centred museums of Van Gogh (1973) and Roger Raveel (1999). The architecture of the last two examples is significantly different, however. The Van Gogh Museum seemingly negates its monographic orientation, while the Raveel Museum amends a white cube logic with a reserved interpretation of artistic individuality and site-boundedness. Parallel to the institutional interpretation of a museum’s monographic mission, and the curators’ representation of the artist-life-work nexus in exhibitions, architecture is yet another element in a museum’s assemblage of an artist presented as a dead or revived author to its visitors.

Significant cross-fertilization of ideas occurred between the Copenhagen Academy and the two key centres of Romantic thought in Germany, namely the Hamburg and Dresden Academies. Rørbye entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1819, studying under Christian August Lorentzen. In 1825 he joined the class of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and became his private pupil. He was known as an inveterate traveller, exploring Norway, touring extensively in Germany, France and Italy and travelling as far east as Greece and Turkey. He finally returned to Copenhagen in 1841.1 Christian August Lorentzen (1746 Sønderborg - Copenhagen 1828) was appointed professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1803, succeeding Jens Juel.
