COPENHAGEN 22 MAY 2019 - CHART today announces the galleries, exhibitions and new initiatives for the 2019 edition, taking place at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Charlottenborg and Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art from 30 August - 1 September 2019. Located in two historic arts venues in the heart of Copenhagen, CHART brings together the best contemporary art and design galleries from the Nordic countries creating a single entry point into the region's gallery scene. CHART 2019 30 August - 1 September 2019 Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Nyhavn, 2 1051, København, Denmark Den Frie, Udstillingsbygning Oslo Plads, 1 2100, København, Denmark CHART, the leading art fair and event in the Nordics, celebrates and develops artistic practices in the region through exceptional presentations by art and design galleries, a unique talent platform of curated exhibitions, and an international museum presentation by Museo Tamayo, Mexico City. Strong institutional collaborations will mark the seventh edition of CHART in 2019, forming a multifaceted event connecting all spheres of the contemporary art and design scene for three days in Copenhagen. Drawing on the Nordic tradition of collaboration, CHART presents a collective exhibition of approximately 40 galleries throughout the exhibition spaces of Charlottenborg and Den Frie, with a contemporary focus across art and collectible design. Galleries will present an unprecedented amount of new works commissioned specifically for CHART as well as curated conceptual presentations. Highlights include: a site-specific installation by Norwegian artist Ann Iren Buan, creating a distinct dialogue with the architecture of Charlottenborg through wall and roof hung sculptures (OSL contemporary); a presentation of all new works by two female Scandinavian artists in dialogue, Tove Storch and Miriam Bäckström (Nils Stærk); a presentation of four male artists with a feminist streak, tackling the male angst around today's striving modern gender-balanced society (Hverfisgallerí); and a presentation of social design by Danish artist FOS and Swedish designer Frederik Paulsen, whose work combines the modernist principles of construction with outlandish materials and colour (Etage Projects). THEME: MATERIALITY In 2019 the CHART programme will explore the theme 'materiality' - from literal materials and matter, craftsmanship and tradition, technology and processes, to physical presence, experience and interaction of the individual and the collective within the art environment. Permeating this year's programme from curated exhibitions to performances and talks, the theme encourages new conversations on how materiality can be a starting point for reflections on art, design and society. "In the present age of digital screens and virtual realities, contemporary practices are increasingly turning towards the use of physical materials and crafts. For this edition of CHART, we want to pay attention to this growing interest in physical presence, both in the materials artists and designers are working with and in the increased longing for human and material encounters at this time. This is what we explore at this year's CHART: how materiality, physicality and presence can open new conversations about our shared existence". Nanna Hjortenberg, Director of CHART CHART TALKS In line with this year's theme, CHART Talks will be centred around the presence of the artist, launching a new talks series which highlights the artistic voice. Audiences will have the opportunity to get close to distinctive artists, designers and craft makers in an intimate and in-depth format, providing an open and direct dialogue between the audience and the artist. INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM PRESENTATION BY MUSEO TAMAYO For the first time CHART invites an international museum to participate in the public programme, bringing an external perspective on the Nordic art scene and never-before-seen artworks to audiences in Copenhagen. Contemporary art museum Museo Tamayo from Mexico City, CHART and Den Frie will present an installation by Portuguese artist, Alexandre Estrela. This collaboration aims to emphasise and further strengthen the close artistic exchange currently taking place between the Nordic and Central American art scenes. The installation will be on display at Den Frie until 17 November 2019. SUPPORTING NEW TALENT CHART's talent platform continues its long-term commitment to highlight and support emerging and unrepresented artists and practitioners across the fields of art, design and architecture. For the third consecutive year Helga Christoffersen, Former Associate Curator at the New Museum, New York, and newly appointed director of Art Hub Copenhagen, will curate CHART Emerging, a group exhibition of visual artists working within the Nordic countries who have recently put forth a distinct position within the artist landscape. CHART Curio is an equivalent platform dedicated to presenting young Nordic designers and craft makers in an international context. Presented in collaboration with Designmuseum Denmark, Line Christiansen, Dean of Domus Academy, Milan, will curate a group exhibition of works by five young designers from each of the five Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden). The exhibition will be shown at Designmuseum Denmark in the museum's new public outdoor vitrines, on display until March 2020. CHART Architecture is a competition for young architects to explore and challenge the crossovers between art, design and architecture through realising temporary pavilions at CHART. The five pavilions are selected by an international jury comprised of David Zahle, Architect and Partner at BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group (DK), Lea Porsager, artist (DK), Pippo Ciorra, Senior Curator of Architecture at MAXXI Museum (IT), Rosa Bertoli, Design Editor at Wallpaper* Magazine (UK) and Nikoline Dyrup Carlsen, architect and co-founder of Spacon & X (DK). The winners of the competition will design pavilions to be presented during the 2018 edition of CHART ART FAIR. Open to: Young professionals in the field of architecture, students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools Dates: For a 72-hour period from 13 - 16 April 2018 Judges include: Bjarke Ingels, Beatrice Galilee, benandsebastian, Thomas Lommeé and Simon Frommenwiler. The CHART Architecture competition, a key element of CHART SOCIAL, was launched in 2014 with the intention of promoting young Nordic architects and exploring the crossover between art, design and architecture. In 2018, CHART is extending the call for applications to young and newly established architectural professionals, as well as students and recent graduates from the Nordic architecture schools. The competition brief will be published on 13 April 2018 at 12:00 noon and will be open for entries for a 72-hour period, closing on 16 April 16 2018 at 12:00 noon. Five finalists selected by this years judges will be chosen to design pavilions to house gastronomy partners and SPACE10 during CHART ART FAIR. The winner will be announced on September 1, 2018. The 2018 concept is OPEN-SOURCE and challenges participants to unfold the potential of open-source content through modular design and cross collaborations, creating a platform for aesthetic experimentation and reusable design. In this collaboration CHART wants to underline the significant relationship existing between art and architecture, suggesting participants to design pavilions closely with artists as an integrated part of their team.
