Romania top UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group F after making an unbeaten start in 2014, but the Faroe Islands have shown that they are not to be underestimated. Previous meetings • The sides have met in four previous games – all FIFA World Cup qualifiers – with Romania winning all four fixtures. • The Faroes can take comfort from the fact that their results against Romania have improved significantly since a 7-0 away loss and a 4-0 home defeat in 1994 World Cup qualifying; on the road to the 2010 finals, the Faroes lost 1-0 in Torshavn and then 3-1 in Piatra Neamt. • Egil á Bø's strike in that game remains the Faroes' only goal in four meetings with Romania. Form guide • Romania are unbeaten in four Group F games (W3 D1), and five competitive matches in total (W3 D2). • Romania are unbeaten in four competitive home fixtures (W2 D2) since a 2-0 loss to Turkey in September 2013. • This is only Romania's second competitive game in Ploiesti; they beat Luxembourg 4-0 in the first one, a UEFA EURO 2004 qualifier on 6 September 2003. • The Faroes triumphed 1-0 in Greece in their last Group F assignment – that ended a 34-match wait (D1 L33) for their first competitive away win since a 2-0 success in Luxembourg on 24 March 2001. • They have never avoided defeat in successive away fixtures. Trivia and links • Romania have played the Faroes in seven UEFA age-group competitions, boasting the record W5 D2. Most recently, the sides were paired in qualifying for this summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship, drawing 2-2 in Toftir before Romania won the return fixture 3-1. • The nations' clubs have met in five UEFA competition matches, with the Romanian teams producing the record W4 D1 L0, with no goals conceded.

5 Romania - Faroe Islands Sunday 29 March 2015 - 18.00CET (19.00 local time) Match press kit Stadionul Ilie Oană, Ploiesti Head coach Anghel Iordănescu Date of birth: 4 May 1950 Nationality: Romanian Playing career: FC Steaua București, OFI Crete FC Coaching career: FC Steaua București (twice), Anorthorsis Famagusta FC, Romania (three times), Greece, Al-Hilal, FC Rapid București, Al-Ain (twice), Al-Ittihad • The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) named Iordănescu 'Coach of the 20th Century' for his exploits with both Steaua and the national team, to which he was appointed for the third time on 27 October 2014. • Between the ages of 12 and 32 he was a midfielder with Steaua, making his debut aged 18 in 1968. Before leaving in 1982 he won two titles and four Romanian Cups, scoring 155 goals in 317 league games. He also made 57 appearances for Romania, scoring 21 international goals. • After two years at OFI Crete, returned to Steaua as assistant and surprisingly played as a 73rd-minute substitute in the 1986 European Champions Clubs' Cup final win against FC Barcelona. Then became Steaua coach, winning the UEFA Super Cup, three league titles and three cups in four seasons as well as reaching the 1989 European Cup final. After two years at Anorthosis, returned to Steaua and won the league again. • In 1993 became national coach and led Romania to their first FIFA World Cup quarter-final a year later, also taking them to EURO '96 and the 1998 World Cup where they made the last 16, a unique run in the team's history. After 1998 had spells as Greece coach and in the Middle East, leading Al-Hilal to 2000 Asian Club Championship victory, and coached Romania again between 2002 and 2004. • In 2004 he joined Saudi Arabia's Al-Ittihad, winning the 2005 AFC Champions League, before retiring from football to concentrate on politics, becoming a Romanian senator. However in 2013 he was appointed FRF technical director and ten months later became national coach again. Lars Olsen Date of birth: 2 February 1961 Nationality: Danish Playing career: Glostrup IF, Køge BK, Brøndby IF (twice), Trabzonspor AŞ, RFC Seraing, FC Basel 1893 Coaching career: Randers FC, Odense BK, Faroe Islands • Enjoyed an illustrious playing career as a central defender, winning five Danish titles in a six-year spell at Brøndby between 1985 and 1991. • Allegedly drove from Turkey to Scandinavia when he learned of his country's belated call-up to EURO '92. His passion and leadership – he played every minute in Sweden – helped inspire Denmark to the most unlikely of triumphs. He ended his career with 84 caps, a record 69 as captain. • Learned his coaching craft with Brøndby, taking charge at various youth and reserve levels after finishing his playing days at the club in 1996, before accepting his first senior job with newly formed Randers in 2003. Guided the team into the Danish Super League in 2004 but could not help maintain their elite status, suffering immediate relegation. • Steered second-division Randers to a surprise 2006 Danish Cup success, beating Esbjerg fB in the final, while also securing a return to the top flight. Moved to Odense in summer 2007, leading his new side to a fourth-place finish in his first term. Consecutive runners-up spots followed in 2008/09 and 2009/10 before he departed in September 2010. • Appointed coach of the Faroe Islands in November 2011, his team were unable to register a win as they came bottom of 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group C, earning their only point in a 1-1 home draw with Kazakhstan.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
