As we near the end of 2017 and begin to anticipate what the new year might bring, there is an increasing degree of uncertainty around Brexit, interest rates, inflation, financial markets, government policy, house prices, and of course the building regulations to name just a few. This impacts the whole economy including our construction sector, the 8 Quantity Surveying - clear, accurate advice third biggest contributor to GDP, which sits only behind the manufacturing and the all-powerful services sector. Whilst all this uncertainty exists, and in truth has always existed in different guises, what we must do is keep abreast of developments, but above all concentrate on our day jobs. Preparing for the future has to always be at the forefront of our minds, including developing talent, embracing new 10 Care Home Design Considerations procurement methods and delivering precision engineered construction solutions. The Practice has recently achieved BIM Level 2 accreditation. Despite the reluctance by some in our sector to commit to this necessary shift to a more collaborative approach to design development, we are in a perfect position to push for this modernisation of design and construction processes. Our Defects Management System 12 In this issue of ‘DYK’ we acknowledge that the construction industry has a serious skills gap and we explain how we are working to change this. We recently attended the launch of the new ‘Place & Making Institute’ initiative which recognises the need to attract smart young people into our sector as well as re-skilling those currently in the sector to deal with new technologies and processes. 14 Future Fit - Building the workforce of tomorrow We are pleased to be actively supporting the apprenticeship programme by encouraging new entrants into the construction industry and providing them with permanent employment positions alongside their degree studies. Whilst we acknowledge the pressing need to encourage new entrants into our industry, we cannot ignore the crucial 16 Building Defects Analysis part the ageing workforce have to play in passing on their knowledge and wisdom to help build the future workforce. I hope you enjoy reading this ‘DYK’ and I would take this opportunity of thanking those colleagues of mine from our Southend office who have kindly taken the time to write the articles and to share their thoughts on matters dear to them. 18 Company News Nigel Franklin, Partner Head of Southend office 2 Issue 12 | Autumn 2017 3 DYK?
