QUIET SPACES AT ST JAMES - A JULIAN GROUP MEETING IN SILENCE WITH GOD The regular monthly Julian Meetings at St. James church, Normanton-on- Soar, encourage each of us in the practice of contemplative prayer and are open to everyone. Julian of Norwich's writings encourage us to be still, silent and receptive in God's presence, trusting Him to make Himself known to us. After a brief introduction our time together is based on the simple idea of spending at least half an hour in silence, waiting on God. You can find more information on the website: www.thejulianmeetings.net or e-mail [email protected] (842341) or [email protected]. The next meetings will be on 26th November and 17th December from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

NORMANTON-on-SOAR HARVEST FESTIVAL AND HARVEST SUPPER – SUNDAY 6 OCTOBER There was a good turn-out at St James church for the Harvest Festival when the church was beautifully decorated. Many thanks to all who came along to help. The service was led by Rev. Mary Essex and Normanton-on-Soar Village Choir led the singing of the hymns which included a special Harvest item with words written by choir member Simon Barrington. After the service, Harvest Supper was served and it was a lovely occasion. Thanks to all those who provided the food this year and to Peter and Terry Tyers for providing the wine. The Harvest Supper was much appreciated. Donations received will go towards the church’s charity of the year, The Shannon Trust. For most of us, reading is a skill we take for granted. For thousands of people in prison, reading a letter from home, a job application or a newspaper is impossible. The Shannon Trust Reading Plan changes this, giving adults in prison the chance to learn to read one-to-one with a peer mentor. The scheme operates in local prisons at Whatton, Lowdham Grange and Nottingham.

NORMANTON ON SOAR CHURCH FÊTE It seems a long time ago now but it was good to see so many people attending the fête at which we were able to welcome the Bishop of Blackburn, Rt. Rev. Julian Henderson, and the Mayor of Rushcliffe, Cllr Mrs Christine Jeffreys. It was lovely to hear the church bells ringing for fifteen minutes before the Fête was opened by Bishop Julian at 2.00pm precisely when they stopped. For the first time in many years we were blessed with a sunny day thereby attracting more people than ever before to enjoy music from Ken Godfrey’s Central Jazz Band in the churchyard and Normanton-on-Soar Village Choir in the church. As usual there was a large selection of stalls and games, barbecue, boat trips on the river and tea in the church with over-eighteens being able to buy a glass of Pimms.

A new innovation this year was a Pet Portrait Competition with a chance to win a framed portrait of your pet illustrated in chalk pastels by Terry Austen. Photos were judged and exhibited at the fête and the winner was Judith Peters. Many thanks to all who helped set- up the fête, provided sponsorship, helped on the various stalls, helped clear up afterwards and members of the Soar Boating Club for providing boat trips. But particular thanks to all those who turned up to support the church for this annual event. This year we raised over £4,600 – the most ever! But most important of all was to see so many people enjoying the occasion. All proceeds from the fête will go towards improving the facilities at the church.

SUTTON BONINGTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY At 7.30pm on Thursday 21st November the Society will meet in Sutton Bonington Village Hall Library when Gail Summerfield will talk about how bulbs are adaptable and not just for spring. There will be no meeting in December.

7 HOLY INNOCENTS’ DAY On Saturday 28th December the church remembers the Holy Innocents who were slaughtered by King Herod in an attempt to destroy the baby Jesus. On this day we remember children and babies who have died or been miscarried. There will be candles available in St Anne’s throughout the day to light in memory of our own holy innocents.

SOAR VALLEY U3A’S next general meeting will be in Normanton-on-Soar Village Hall at 2.00pm on Tuesday 26th November when speaker Paul Stafford’s subject will be North Korea, arguably the most secretive and bizarre country in the world. For more information, phone Membership Secretary Lorna Orton on 01332 811030 or visit our website -http://u3asites.org.uk/soar-valley
