ESS Music trip to Lethbridge On Friday, May 26 the Intermediate Band and the Senior Band traveled to Lethbridge to attend a full day workshop at the University of Lethbridge. Clinicians were arranged for every instrument in the band from the faculty at U of L. Students took part in two one-hour private group lessons on their respective instruments and then listened to the faculty give a performance before we broke for lunch.

The afternoon was spent in full rehearsal with the Head of the Music Department, Mr. Chee Meng Low. After four hours of playing we returned to Elkford for dinner time.

June Band concert A packed audience witnessed the final band concert for this year. The improvement made from the beginning of the first concert to the last was tremendous. A big thank you to Mr. Ashbridge and the band students for their final efforts.

Paint Your Drains On June 13th, the grade 9 students from Elkford Secondary participated in “Paint Your Drains”, a follow up activity to their participation in the Columbia Basin Trust’s “Know Your Watershed” program. This is a water stewardship education initiative that helps students understand where their water comes from, how it used and where their water goes after it is used. The goal was to paint the storm drains around town to remind residents that only rain should go down the drains. Pollution off streets, driveways and homes carried in storm water goes directly into the Elk River and can be harmful to the fish. Students hope that their fish on the drains will help people remember the importance of protecting our local water shed.

Elk Valley Arch 150 Project To commemorate Canada’s 150th anniversary and the conversion of the TransCanada trail to the Great Trail, we are getting students excited about their school, community, region, province, and nation. The pinnacle of our project will be a student sculpted “welcome” arch. The arch will be sculpted by students with the guidance of a local chainsaw sculptor Michael Penny. The arch will be constructed from 3 local pine logs weighing roughly 1000 kg each. The arch will be assembled at the three-way intersection of the AB/BC border, the TransCanada trail, and the high point of the Elk Pass, by a team of students from 4 different high schools in the week leading up to Canada day 2017. This arch will be a symbol of the students’ work, collaboration, and service contributions to their community. If you wish to see additional information please check out the awesome website. https://elkvalleyarch.com/
