Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

3rd EDITION 1 & 2 OCTOBER 2020 Preventing war : responding to new threats EDITORIAL Given the COVID-19 pandemic, it was impossible to organise the Normandy World Peace Forum in its original format and on its original dates, just before the commemorations in honour of the Allied landings on 6 June 1944. Nevertheless, it was important to the Normandy Region to continue with this international event which is even more relevant in view of the global pandemic. ©R.Chapron The 3rd edition on “Preventing war: responding to new threats” will address the three major areas of risk in today’s world: a Hervé Morin breakdown of social ties, environmental issues and the use of President of the new technologies. In addition to these threats, we are living Normandy Region through a pandemic which has accentuated economic and social inequalities around the world and has highlighted the limits of our development model. Public figures will debate these questions. In addition, the Forum will pay tribute to the role of women in peace-building with debates organised in partnership with ELLE magazine and UN Women France. The Forum’s programme features three major conferences, fifteen debates, two cultural evenings, a Village for Peace with musical entertainment and photography exhibitions, youth events including the European programme Walk the Global Walk, focusing on the UN’s sustainable development projects, and the Freedom Prize award ceremony, where Loujain Al Hathloul will be recognised as the winner of the 3rd edition, and much more. Initially launched by the Normandy Region, the Normandy World Peace Forum forms a part of the region’s continued efforts over the decades to focus on remembrance, along with many initiatives which have been developed to share these memories and to support new generations as they try to understand the modern world and the peace-building process.

33 BARONY STREET WWW.INGLEBYGALLERY.COM INGLEBY EDINBURGH EH3 6NX [email protected] SCOTLAND TEL No + 44 (0)131 556 4441 THOMAS JOSHUA COOPER Thomas Joshua Cooper is one of the most celebrated and distinctive landscape photographers working anywhere in the world today. He was born in California in 1946 but has lived in Scotland for many years. Cooper is the founding head of photography at Glasgow School of Art but spends much of his life seeking out the edges of the world. Like artists such as Richard Long, and Hamish Fulton, Cooper is a traveller, a nomadic artist whose extraordinary photographs are made in series at significant points around the globe, most often at its extremities. The capturing of any one image can involve days, weeks and months of preparation, arduous travel and considerable efforts to achieve. The locations are found on a map, tracked down and then photographed, each place the subject of a single negative taken with a weighty antique field camera. They are meditative, almost philosophical images, exquisitely printed by the artist in the 19th century manner with layers of silver and gold chloride. In each place the geography may not be readily identifiable, the image on cusp of dissolving into abstraction. Between September 2019 and January 2020 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art presented Atlas of Emptiness and Extremity, The World's Edge, an exhibition of 65 images marking the completion of Cooper's epic Atlas project. Over 32 years Cooper voyaged to the cardinal points of the continents fringing the Atlantic Basin, charting from pole to pole, and making photographs out to horizonless seas and over apparently limitless landscapes.

  • The Photography of Edward Chambré Hardman Peter
The Continuity of Landscape Representation: The Photography of Edward Chambré Hardman (1898-1988) Peter Hagerty A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy This research programme was carried out in collaboration with the E.Chambré Hardman Trust, Liverpool. May 1999 Abstract The major source of material for the research was the archive of the E.Chambré Hardman’s Trust. This archive comprises Hardman’s bequest of photographs, negatives and associated ephemera. Prior to the present research the author had undertaken extensive ordering and conservation of this collection and the present work therefore builds upon this earlier research. The research divides Hardman’s oeuvre into portraiture and landscape, along lines that he had determined by ordering and concern. The thesis focuses exclusively on his landscape photography. The representation of landscape is a recognised genre within the history of art. The thesis locates the landscape photography of the British photographer Edward Chambré Hardman (1898-1988) within the histories of landscape photography and to the broader genre of landscape representation by British artists during the first half of the twentieth century. The research describes the representations of landscape made by painters prior to the invention of photography as providing the initial subject model for photographers. Subsequently photographers wrote their own history of landscape representation and it is to this tradition to which Hardman is heir. Using Hardman’s notebooks, diaries, letters and collected ephemera the research constructs an accurate chronology for Hardman’s life and the sequential production of his landscape photographs.
