RMS AFL TOWNSVILLE PREMIERSHIP SEASON AFL Townsville Offical Legal Sponsor Chairmans Welcome At last the footy is kicking off Welcome to the RMS AFL Townsville Premiership Season. What a build-up we have had to the RMS AFL Townsville Premiership season. Firstly the Gold Coast Sun’s Community Camp, where the Townsville District was able to meet and mingle with the Sun’s players. There was opportunity to dine and train with the Sun’s players and coaching staff, while been taught some new valuable new skills, and of course many hero autographs collected along the way. This was followed up by game day at Tony Ireland Stadium. What an opening we saw between Townsville AFL representative side v’s Townsville Army, a true show case of the talent we have in the local competition. Well done and thankyou to all players, coaches and support staff. Then the “big one” Gold Coast Sun’s V’s North Melbourne Kangaroos in the preseason NAB Cup game, a first ever official AFL game for Townsville. This saw a fantastic crowd on what was one of our warmest North Queensland days for some time, great effort by all the organisers and huge support from the community, well done. Now it is time for the local players to again take centre stage, round one is here and what a way to kick it off. The replay of the 2012 grand final between Hermit Park Tigers and Thuringowa Bulldogs at Neil French oval. The Bulldogs will be keen to make an early statement and the Tigers under new coach Dean Anderson will be keen to keep that winning record intact. RMS Curra Swans will be travelling to the home of the Lions, Harold Phillips Oval. This encounter will be a ripper with both sides recruiting well during the off season and the return of Adam McDonald to the Curra ranks. The Lions must be congratulated on the work they have put into their home ground and surrounds to establish a great AFL venue. Next week brings the Kickstart Carnival to Townsville. This is a National Indigenous carnival that will show case the country’s top Indigenous players and will be well worth the effort to go and watch the games at Tony Ireland Stadium. I strongly encourage everyone to support this event. Special thanks to RMS Engineering and Construction and BCK for their ongoing support of Australian Football. A big thanks to all the volunteers in football world, without the work done at board and club level by these dedicated people football would not happen. That is it for now, I wish all clubs a successful and injury free season and look forward to enjoying many games of great AFL football around Townsville again this year. Cheers Peter Busch Staff Changes Staff Changes at AFL Queensland Townsville Office Since the end of the 2012 season there have been a few changes in the Townsville AFL Queensland office. David Noonan has moved to Brisbane to take on the role of State Auskick Coordinator and Peter Young has been appointed the Club Development Manager at the Mt Gravatt Football Club. Both of these men made significant contributions to football in Townsville during their time here and we wish them well in their new positions. Taking over the Development Coordinators role is Adam McDonald. Adam spent a year away from Townsville in 2012 playing football in Canberra, but the lure of the north and the opportunity play an important role in growing “Australia’s Game” in Townsville was too much for him to resist. Adam’s responsibilities include coordinating the Auskick and Schools programs together with working with clubs to transition these children into club football. Please feel free to contact Adam if you have any questions or suggestions for improvement in his areas of responsibility. Kath Newman was appointed to the position of Regional Manager in December 2012. Since taking up the position she has been busy with the coordination of the “Festival of Football” which included the NAB cup game, Community Camp and will culminate in the National U15 KickStart Championships next week at Tony Ireland Stadium. Kath brings to the position 25 years of experience working in education as well as a wealth of knowledge working with elite athlete development. She is looking forward to building on the very successful talent development programs of the past 3 years that have resulted in record numbers of Townsville players being selected in Queensland Country, Queensland and NEAFL programs. Adam and Kath are committed to ensuring AFL – Australia’s Game, continues to grow and they both look forward to working with the Townsville AFL community this year and for many years to come.
